Cade Horton Expected to Have Normal Offseason

Chicago Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said that right-hander Cade Horton (ribs) would have been on the roster if the team had advanced to the National League Championship Series, and the expectation is that he will have a "relatively normal offseason," according to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com. "Given how much of a competitor he is, I was sad for him that he didn't get to pitch in the postseason. I know that's going to be his No. 1 goal going forward," Hoyer said. The 24-year-old suffered a right-rib fracture late in September and was not available for either the wild-card series against the San Diego Padres or the NL Division Series versus the Milwaukee Brewers. The former seventh overall pick out of Oklahoma back in 2022 really impressed in his first 23 big-league outings (22 starts) for the Cubs in 2025, posting a strong 2.67 ERA and 1.08 WHIP with 97 K's in 118 innings. Horton is going to be a popular starting pitching target with upside in fantasy drafts next spring.

Cade Horton to Throw Another Bullpen on Friday

Chicago Cubs rookie right-hander Cade Horton's (rib) light bullpen session went "really well" on Tuesday, according to manager Craig Counsell. Horton is now scheduled to throw another bullpen session on Friday, per Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times. The 24-year-old suffered a fractured right rib at the very end of the regular season and wasn't included on the playoff roster for the wild-card series against the San Diego Padres or for the National League Division Series against the Milwaukee Brewers. It's possible that Horton could be available for the Cubbies later this month, but they first have to climb out of a 2-0 hole in a best-of-five series against Milwaukee. The former first-rounder looked great in his first 23 MLB games (22 starts) during the regular season, going 11-4 with a 2.67 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and 97:33 K:BB in 118 innings. Horton should be guaranteed a rotation spot going into the 2026 season, which will be his first full year in the Show.

Cade Horton to Throw on Tuesday

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Cade Horton (ribs) will throw a bullpen session on Tuesday. The plan is for Horton to throw around 30 pitches at mid-intensity. If everything goes well, Horton should be available if the Cubs advance to the NLCS. The Cubs are currently down 2-0 to the Milwaukee Brewers in the NLDS. It looks like they'll have reinforcements, assuming they're able to rally and beat the Brewers. Horton hasn't pitched since September 23 due to a rib fracture.

Cade Horton to Throw Off a Mound This Week

Chicago Cubs rookie right-hander Cade Horton (rib), who has been sidelined with a fractured right rib, is scheduled to throw off a mound this week at Wrigley Field, according to Patrick Mooney of The Athletic. It will help the Cubs determine whether Horton might be available if the Cubs advance past the division-rival Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Division Series to face either the Los Angeles Dodgers or Philadelphia Phillies in the NL Championship Series. Not having Horton for the NLDS and potentially beyond could really hurt Chicago, as the young hurler went 8-1 with a 1.03 ERA in 12 starts at the All-Star break. The 24-year-old was not on the roster for the wild-card series or for the NLDS after suffering a right-rib fracture in his final regular-season start on Sept. 23. The Cubs would probably have to make it to the World Series for Horton to have a shot at returning in 2025.

Cade Horton Goes on 15-Day Injured List With Fractured Rib

The Chicago Cubs have placed right-hander Cade Horton (rib) on the 15-day injured list with a fractured right rib, retroactive to Sept. 25. The team recalled left-hander Jordan Wicks from Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding move. Horton exited what proved to be his final regular-season start on Sept. 23 with back soreness, and manager Craig Counsell said an MRI revealed "areas of concern" in his rib area. It wasn't regarded as a serious injury, but it worsened after Horton played catch on Saturday. The Cubs will now go without Horton for at least one playoff round, which is a significant hit after the 24-year-old rookie put together a stellar regular season. Horton finished 11-4 with a 2.67 ERA, a 1.08 WHIP, 97 strikeouts, and 33 walks over 22 starts and 118 innings. Without Horton, the Cubs figure to start Matthew Boyd, Shota Imanaga, and either Jameson Taillon or Colin Rea in their best-of-three wild-card series against the San Diego Padres.

Cade Horton Cleared, Still Areas of Concern

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Cade Horton (back) underwent an MRI after being removed early during Tuesday's start against the New York Mets. Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Horton is good to go, but still has some areas of concern. The main concern is around the rib area, but they will continue to look into the issue. It sounds like doctors will look at the MRI to get more information. For now, Horton is slated to throw on Friday and remains on track to pitch this postseason. There should be more updates on his status within the next few days.

Cade Horton to Undergo MRI on his Back

The Chicago Cubs are having rookie right-hander Cade Horton (back) undergo an MRI exam "to see what we're dealing with," according to manager Craig Counsell. "We're optimistic, but we want to make sure we know what we're dealing with or if we're dealing with anything," Counsell said. The Cubs pulled Horton early from his outing on Tuesday against the New York Mets as a precaution after his back tightened up. It doesn't sound like the 24-year-old's injury is very serious, but the Cubs want to make sure with the playoffs starting next week. Depending on what they find, the impressive rookie might not be able to pitch in the wild-card series. If his back injury turns out to be nothing, it's possible Horton could start in Game 1 of the wild-card series next Tuesday. The former first-rounder has been great in his first 23 outings (22 starts), going 11-4 with a 2.67 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and 97 strikeouts in 118 innings pitched.

Cade Horton Pulled From Tuesday's Start With Back Tightness

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Cade Horton (back) was pulled from Tuesday's 9-7 loss to the Mets after pitching three innings "as a precaution because his back was tightening up," per Marquee Sports Network's Andy Martinez. Horton allowed one run on two hits (including a solo home run) and no walks with two strikeouts on 29 pitches. This was an unfortunate turn of events for the Cubs and fantasy managers, as the 24-year-old has put together an excellent rookie season. He is now 11-4 with a 2.67 ERA, a 1.08 WHIP, and a 7.40 K/9 rate in 22 starts and 118 IP. The Cubs have already clinched a playoff spot, so it remains to be seen if Horton would take a final turn in the rotation even if he is deemed ready to go.

Cade Horton Records 10th Win of the Season

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Cade Horton picked up his 10th win of the season on Tuesday, throwing 6 1/3 innings of one-run ball in his team's 6-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves. Horton struck out just two, but walked none and allowed only four hits. In 110 innings (20 starts) this season, Horton is 10-4 with a 2.70 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and 89 strikeouts. Horton has struggled to miss bats at the big-league level, posting just a 20% strikeout rate. However, he has shown much better strikeout stuff in the minors, recording a 30.6% strikeout rate in 29 innings at Triple-A this season and a 28% strikeout rate across multiple levels in 2024. Horton is a must-start fantasy pitcher down the stretch, given his success so far and his win potential while pitching for the Cubs.

Cade Horton has Another Stellar Outing

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Cade Horton was sharp on the mound during Saturday's outing against the Los Angeles Angels. The right-hander was lifted during his previous start due to a blister on his finger. However, Horton didn't appear to be bothered by it at all during this outing. Horton tossed six shutout innings, allowing three hits while striking out seven batters in the win. The 24-year-old has an unbelievable 0.49 ERA across his last seven starts. His next start will come at Coors Field against the Colorado Rockies. That's not a fun ballpark for pitchers, but Horton must be started right now.
