Cade Horton Makes Spring Debut

Chicago Cubs starting pitching prospect Cade Horton (shoulder) made his spring debut on Saturday afternoon. Horton tossed one inning of one-run ball. He allowed one hit (a home run) and tallied one punchout. The 23-year-old missed the entire second half of the 2024 season due to a Grade 2 right subscapularis strain. The Cubs were slowly increasing his workload during camp. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status as he may be cleared to throw multiple innings in his next spring outing. Before his injury last summer, Horton tossed 16 1/3 innings at Double-A to the tune of a strong 1.10 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP. He tallied 18 punchouts with just two free passes. He then made his Triple-A debut and allowed 15 earned runs across 18 innings. Fantasy managers should expect Horton to open the season at Triple-A and compete for an MLB debut later in the summer.

Cade Horton Throws Bullpen Session

Chicago Cubs starting pitching prospect Cade Horton (shoulder) completed a bullpen session on Sunday. The right-handed pitcher faced four batters in the brief session. This was the first time Horton faced live batters since being shut down last June. Horton is considered not only the team's top pitching prospect but also one of the top options in their system. Before being shut down last summer, Horton was nearing his MLB debut. He opened the 2024 campaign by getting his second look at Double-A, where he posted a stellar 1.10 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP across 16 1/3 innings. He tallied 18 punchouts and served up just two walks. He was then given a brief look at Triple-A, where he allowed 15 runs in just 18 frames. The former seventh-overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft is a name to monitor during camp, as he should be in contention to make his MLB debut later this season if he can move past this injury. He will likely open the season with Triple-A Iowa.

Cade Horton On Track For Normal Spring Training

According to Ryan Herrera of JustBaseball.com, Chicago Cubs starting pitching prospect Cade Horton (shoulder) is expected to have a normal spring training. The top arm in the Chicago system was on track to make his major-league debut last summer but was eventually shut down with a shoulder injury in May. Before the injury, Horton held a 1.10 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP at Double-A and got a brief taste of Triple-A. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status during spring training, as he may just need a short stint at Triple-A before reaching the major leagues. The former seventh-overall pick has held a career 3.22 ERA and 1.07 WHIP across 122 2/3 innings in the minor leagues. He has struck out 157 batters and served up 40 free passes. He should be viewed as one of the sport's top pitching prospects and will carry value in redraft leagues when promoted.

Cade Horton Set For Shoulder Exam

Chicago Cubs starting pitching prospect Cade Horton (shoulder) is set to undergo a shoulder exam later this month, according to Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune. If the 23-year-old passes the exam, he could then begin a throwing program. The No. 3 prospect in the Chicago system was sidelined since late May last season with a shoulder strain. Before the injury, Horton held a stellar 1.10 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP in Double-A Tennessee. He then earned a brief taste of Triple-A ball and posted a 7.50 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP before sustaining the injury. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his progression during the offseason, as the former seventh overall selection will likely earn an opportunity in the majors later in the summer.

Cade Horton Likely Done For The Year

Chicago Cubs right-hander Cade Horton (lat), the team's top pitching prospect and the 17th overall prospect per MLB Pipeline, suffered a setback in his rehab from a right-lat strain. The expectation is that he will get back to throwing, but given where we are at in the calendar, the 22-year-old getting back to competitive action before the end of the minor-league season would be difficult. The former first-rounder in 2022 was promoted from Double-A Tennessee to Triple-A Iowa on April 30 after he had a 1.10 ERA in four starts with the Smokies with 18 K's in 16 1/3 innings. In his five starts with Iowa, though, he had a 7.50 ERA in 18 innings before going on the seven-day injured list on May 31. Horton was diagnosed with a right-lat strain on June 4 and was shut down from throwing for a month. In 2023, Horton had a 2.65 ERA and 117 K's over 88 1/3 innings in 21 starts for Single-A Myrtle Beach, High-A South Bend and Tennessee.

Cade Horton Moves To Seven Day Injured List

Chicago Cubs starting pitching prospect Cade Horton (lat) was placed on the seven-day injured list on Friday with a lat injury. The top prospect in Chicago left his most recent start on May 29 early after just logging one inning of work. The Cubs will be very cautious with Horton, so he may miss an extended period of time. Horton opened the season with Double-A but earned a promotion to Triple-A early on. However, he has not shown much consistency at Triple-A, with a 7.50 ERA and 1.56 WHIP compared to the 1.25 ERA and 1.02 WHIP he held at Double-A over the past two summers. The former seventh overall selection in the 2022 MLB Draft was on pace to join the major league roster this summer, but this injury may affect that timeline. Dynasty and keeper league managers should continue to stash Horton, but redraft managers can drop him for the time being.

Cade Horton Removed Due To Back Soreness

Chicago Cubs pitching prospect Cade Horton (back) exited Wednesday's start with Triple-A Iowa due to back soreness. Horton gave up a two-run homer in the first inning on Wednesday and returned to the mound for warmups prior to the second, but he departed under his own power after tossing several pitches. Horton was making his fifth start for Iowa and ninth overall in 2024 after tearing up the Double-A competition earlier this season. The 22-year-old right-hander is Chicago's No. 1 prospect and MLB's No. 18 prospect for 2024, per MLB Pipeline, and he's struck out 40 batters over 34 1/3 innings. It remains to be seen if Horton is dealing with a significant setback, but his major-league debut could be delayed a bit as a result. Even so, Horton is unlikely to be called up until he improves on his 7.50 ERA and 1.56 WHIP at the Triple-A level.

Cade Horton Has Best Triple-A Start

Chicago Cubs starting pitching prospect Cade Horton posted his best start at Triple-A on Wednesday with five innings of two-run ball, allowing four hits, one free pass, and striking out six. Through his first four starts with Triple-A Iowa, Horton has posted a 6.88 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, and 20:10 K:BB ratio. However, in his two recent starts, he has a much better 4.50 ERA and 1.00 WHIP, which is a good sign. The top prospect in the Chicago pipeline opened the season with Double-A Tennessee and posted a stellar 1.10 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, and 18:2 K:BB ratio, which allowed him to move up to Triple-A quite early this spring. The former number-seven overall pick should reach the major leagues later this summer, and with his recent turnaround at Triple-A, this promotion could come relatively soon. Horton should be rostered in all dynasty and keeper leagues and is worth stashing in deeper redraft leagues for now.

Cade Horton Struggling At Triple-A

Chicago Cubs starting pitching prospect Cade Horton was recently promoted to Triple-A Iowa but has struggled since his call-up. Through three starts with Triple-A, the 22-year-old has an 8.25 ERA and, 1.67 WHIP with a mediocre 9:14 BB:K ratio. However, Horton began the season with Double-A Tennessee and dominated with a 1.10 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, and 2:18 BB:K ratio. Horton is considered one of the best pitching prospects in baseball and the second-best prospect in the Cubs system, only behind Pete Crow-Armstrong, who is already in the major leagues. Horton should be expected to contend for a position on the major league roster later in the summer but first, he has to work through these struggles at Triple-A. He should be rostered in all dynasty and keeper leagues and will be worth stashing in redraft formats later this summer.

Cade Horton Strikes Out Six In Triple-A Debut

Chicago Cubs starting pitching prospect Cade Horton was promoted to Triple-A last week and made his first start on May 4. In this outing, he tossed four innings of two-run ball with four walks and six strikeouts. After dominating Double-A at the beginning of this season and last year, Horton faced a bit of a challenge in Triple-A. The 22-year-old allowed just two runs throughout his four starts at Double-A this April but already matched that total in just one Triple-A start. However, the number two prospect in the Cubs system continued to showcase his elite swing-and-miss potential, suggesting that he is more than capable of handling Triple-A competition. Horton is expected to be up with the major league roster later in the summer and should be rostered in all dynasty and keeper formats.
