Devin Williams Agrees to Three-Year Deal With Mets

Free-agent right-handed reliever Devin Williams and the New York Mets agreed to a three-year contract on Monday that guarantees more than $50 million, sources tell ESPN's Jeff Passan. The New York Yankees acquired Williams from the Milwaukee Brewers last December, but he struggled to a career-worst 4.79 ERA in 67 relief appearances in the Bronx. The 31-year-old will stay in the Big Apple and join the Mets, where he figures to take over closing duties if Edwin Diaz leaves in free agency. Williams got off to a rough start in pinstripes in 2025 and ended up sharing the closer's role for much of the season. Before his rough campaign with the Yanks, Williams established himself as one of the most dominant high-leverage relievers in Milwaukee, and he'll be looking to return to that form in 2026. He had four blown saves in 22 chances in his first and only year with the Yankees.

Dodgers Targeting Devin Williams to Bolster Their Bullpen?

The Los Angeles Dodgers won their second straight World Series title this fall by defeating the Toronto Blue Jays in seven games, but it's no secret their bullpen was a weak spot in 2025. They are expected to "dive into the deep waters of the free-agent relief market" again this offseason. According to league sources, the Dodgers are "looking to add at least one high-leverage right-handed bullpen arm, per The Athletic's Fabian Ardaya. Two-time All-Star and current free agent Devin Williams is a candidate to be signed by L.A. after they were in the mix to trade for Williams last winter before the Brewers dealt him to the Yankees. Williams had a rough 4.79 ERA in the Bronx and lost the closer role by the end of the year, but his 2.68 FIP and 13.1 K's per nine innings suggest he could bounce back as a high-end reliever in 2026. There appears to be mutual interest between L.A. and Williams. Stay tuned.

Devin Williams Says he's Open to Returning to the Yankees

New York Yankees right-handed reliever Devin Williams is eligible to become a free agent at the conclusion of this year's World Series, and it's unclear whether he'll be an option to re-sign. "I'm definitely open to that. Takes two parties for that, but I would definitely be open to it," Williams said when asked if he was open to coming back to the Bronx in 2026 and beyond. The 31-year-old's first season in pinstripes in 2025 didn't go as planned. The two-time All-Star and former National League Rookie of the Year finished the regular season with a career-worst 4.79 ERA (2.68 FIP) and 1.13 WHIP with 18 saves, 90 strikeouts, and 25 walks in 62 innings out of the bullpen. Williams was eventually replaced in the closer's role in the Bronx, but his 2.68 FIP shows that his surface numbers in 2025 were a bit unlucky. He could bounce back in 2026, but Williams' fantasy appeal as a closer might be better off if he signs elsewhere.

Devin Williams' Struggles Continue in Loss

New York Yankees reliever Devin Williams (3-5) suffered his fifth loss of the season in a 5-3 decision against the Houston Astros on Friday. The Yankees called Williams in to pitch the top of the 10th inning in a 2-2 game, but manager Aaron Boone's decision proved costly. The right-hander quickly uncorked a wild pitch, enabling automatic runner Jose Altuve to move from second to third, before giving up an RBI single to Carlos Correa. Williams retired the next two hitters, but he surrendered a two-run homer to Taylor Trammell to put the game out of reach. While Williams finished the frame with a strikeout, it went down as the latest horrid outing for him. The former shutdown closer has now coughed up at least one earned run (nine total) in a shocking five consecutive appearances, increasing his ERA to a sky-high 5.73 in 44 innings. Williams does have a team-high 17 saves this season, but the playoff-contending Yankees probably have no choice but to demote him to low-leverage situations at this point. David Bednar, who didn't pitch Friday after throwing 42 pitches on Wednesday, seems like the logical pick to take over as the Yankees' closer down the stretch.

Devin Williams Takes Loss In Non-Save Situation Tuesday

New York Yankees relief pitcher Devin Williams continued his poor season on Tuesday, taking the loss in a 2-0 game against the Rangers. Williams came in to pitch the eighth inning with the game scoreless. He got the first out on a ground-out, allowed a double and two walks, gave up a go-ahead, two-RBI single, got the second out on a force-out, and then exited the game. Mark Leiter Jr. got the third out without allowing any more damage. Williams, who has historically been one of fantasy's most reliable closers, has been awful this season, going 3-4 with 17 of 20 save opportunities converted to go with a 5.44 ERA, a 1.21 WHIP, and an 11.51 K/9 rate in 43 IP. He has allowed runs in each of his last four appearances, and his last three appearances have resulted in two blown saves and a loss. The Yankees just acquired David Bednar and Camilo Doval, and also have Luke Weaver, who has some closing experience. At this point, it remains to be seen how many opportunities Williams will get before the Yankees turn to one of their other late-inning options.

Yankees Plan to Keep Devin Williams in Closer's Role

The New York Yankees plan to keep right-hander Devin Williams in the closer's role, Aaron Boone said. They intend to have the new acquisitions fit in around him, Bryan Hoch, beat writer for the Yankees, reports. The Yankees significantly bolstered their bullpen at the trade deadline, acquiring three high-leverage relievers in David Bednar, Jake Bird, and Camilo Doval. All while still having Luke Weaver and Williams. It's been a rough year for Williams, with his 5.01 ERA and 1.14 WHIP. That being said, he does have 17 saves in 19 save opportunities. At one point this season, Weaver took over the closer role for the Yankees, so although Boone has stated that Williams will continue to work in the closer role, his leash just got a lot shorter with the acquisitions of Bird, Doval, and Bednar. Bednar and Doval were both closers for their previous ballclubs, and at this point, it's uncertain how the Yankees will prioritize their relievers. Fantasy managers will want to keep an eye out for how this plays out so they can adjust accordingly.

Devin Williams Records 13th Save

New York Yankees closer Devin Williams collected his 13th save of 2025 in a 9-6 win over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday. Williams entered in the top of the ninth inning and made quick work of the Mariners, going 1-2-3 on 12 pitches (eight strikes). He struck out both Dominic Canzone and Cole Young swinging. The 30-year-old's ERA has fallen to 4.86 (2.51 FIP) with 43:14 K:BB and a 1.17 WHIP in 33 1/3 innings. Williams has endured his share of struggles this year, but his only blown save came way back on April 19.

Devin Williams Perfect in Save Opportunity

New York Yankees closer Devin Williams shut down the New York Mets in the ninth inning to wrap up a 6-4 win on Sunday. The right-hander went 1-2-3 and fanned two, including a game-ending strikeout of Francisco Lindor, to record his 12th save in 13 tries. It was an encouraging rebound for Williams, who took the loss against Toronto on Wednesday after surrendering two earned runs in one inning. For the most part, the 30-year-old has settled down since an ugly first month of the season. Williams' ERA, which was over 10.00 in early May, has fallen to 5.01 across 32 1/3 innings. The two-time All-Star has also posted quality strikeout and walk numbers (41:14) and a 1.21 WHIP.

Devin Williams Takes Loss on Wednesday

New York Yankees closer Devin Williams (2-3) took the loss in an 11-9 slugfest against the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday. With the Yankees' bullpen undermanned, they brought Williams in to pitch the bottom of the eighth inning in a 9-9 tie. He struck out Andres Gimenez to start the inning before encountering disaster. Williams walked George Springer and then issued an intentional pass to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Both runners advanced on a flyout by Alejandro Kirk. Williams was an out away from escaping trouble, but he uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Springer to score. Addison Barger then singled in Guerrero. Williams was charged with two earned runs on one hit, two walks, and a strikeout in a 25-pitch inning. The right-hander's ERA has increased to an unattractive 5.17 ERA across 31 1/3 innings, but that's largely because of an awful first month of the season. Wednesday's outing was the first time he gave up a run since June 3, breaking a streak of eight appearances.

Devin Williams Earns 11th Save

New York Yankees reliever Devin Williams pitched a perfect ninth inning to record his 11th save in a 3-0 win over the Athletics on Friday. Williams struck out one and needed 15 pitches to shut the door on the A's. It was the right-hander's eighth straight scoreless appearance and his ninth in 10 outings this month. Notably, before turning to Williams in the ninth, the Yankees used fellow saves candidate Luke Weaver in the eighth. Weaver tossed a 1-2-3 frame and logged his seventh hold. He hasn't received a save opportunity since returning from a three-week stay on the injured list on June 20. Williams, meanwhile, has notched two saves in that span. Manager Aaron Boone said a week ago that Williams and Weaver would each close games, but it appears they'd rather use the latter in a setup role when both pitchers are available.
