Boston Red Sox middle infielder David Hamilton is starting at second base and is batting in the two-hole for the Red Sox on Thursday against the hosting Miami Marlins and right-hander Kyle Tyler. Hamilton was on the bench for the third time in the last four games for the BoSox on Wednesday, so fantasy managers that have been relying on him for his speed have to be thankful that he's back in there on the Fourth of July. The 26-year-old is hitting just .171 (6-for-35) with a homer, double, four RBI, two walks, seven strikeouts and seven stolen bases in 13 games (nine starts) since June 14. Overall, though, Hamilton has been a bright spot for Boston and for fantasy managers and he's seen plenty of playing time with both Trevor Story and Vaughn Grissom hurt this year. He's mainly been helpful for his speed with 21 steals in 57 games in his second big-league season.
New York Mets relief pitcher Edwin Diaz was activated from his suspension on Saturday and was tasked to hold on to a three-run lead in the final inning. Diaz hit the first batter, Oneil Cruz. Then he struck out Rowdy Tellez to earn the first out. He then got Andrew McCutchen to ground into a double play to seal the victory. This was a great outing for the 30-year-old as he has been sidelined over the past two weeks due to suspension protocols and has dealt with a shoulder injury in May. Across 24 innings, Diaz sits with a disappointing 4.50 ERA and 1.13 WHIP. However, he has tossed four straight shutout frames and has only allowed two hits in this span, which suggests the elite closer may be rounding into form.
Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Andrew Chafin tallied his first save of the season on Saturday by recording the final out. Jason Foley was given the ball in the final frame with a three-run lead but allowed a lead-off solo shot to Spencer Steer and then a two-out single to Noelvi Marte. With the potential tying runner at the plate, Detroit manager A.J. Hinch brought out southpaw Andrew Chafin to record the final out. He sealed the victory by striking out the lone batter, Santiago Espinal. Through 28 innings this season, the 34-year-old has posted a mediocre 3.86 ERA, 1.54 WHIP, and a 12:36 BB:K ratio. While Jason Foley should continue to see the majority of save opportunities in the Motor City, Chafin could become a name to keep a close eye on in deeper leagues, as he could begin to earn more save opportunities in the second half of the summer if Foley continues to struggle.
Cincinnati Reds outfielder Spencer Steer went 1-for-3 with a walk and his 13th home run of the season on Saturday afternoon. His long ball in the ninth inning extended his home run streak to a remarkable three games. Since June 22, Steer has been swinging a hot bat with a .286/.375/.612 line and four home runs, 13 RBI, and a 5:14 BB:K ratio. In 87 games this season, the Oregon product sits with a .243/.336/.435 line. He does boast an above-average 10.6% walk rate which does increase his value in points leagues. Steer remains a solid outfield option in all formats and should continue to tally a stable amount of counting stats on a strong Cincinnati offense.
Cleveland Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan went 2-for-4 with a single and his ninth home run of the campaign on Saturday to lead the Guardians to a victory. The 26-year-old currently boats an incredible .365/.421/.542 slash line with four swiped bags, 27 RBI, and a 21:22 BB:K ratio. Since June 1, the Oregon State product has tallied a remarkable 39 total hits in 27 games. Under the hood, Kwan holds a .316 xBA, which places him in the top 98th percentile among all hitters. In addition, he holds a 5.9% whiff rate and 8.1% K rate, which are currently the best marks in the sport. Kwan should be considered the top producer in batting average going forward and could finish with a 20/20 season if he continues to showcase his power.
Texas Rangers second baseman Marcus Semien went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run on Saturday afternoon, powering the Rangers to a victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. Semien entered this game with a 22-game home run drought. In this span, the 33-year-old held a disappointing .143/.196/.176 slash line with just eight RBI, one stolen base, and a 6:13 BB:K ratio. Through 87 games this season, Semien has yet to find his stride as he sits with a .232/.296/.383 line with 12 home runs and three swiped bags. However, he does hold a .262 xBA, which suggests he could see some positive regression in the second half of the summer. Nonetheless, this prolonged slump does present an intriguing buy-low opportunity for the proven fantasy contributor.
Toronto Blue Jays rookie righthander Yariel Rodriguez earned his first career victory on Saturday afternoon in a 5-4 win over the Seattle Mariners. Rodriguez spun six innings, striking out six batters and surrendering no runs on one hit and two walks. The 27-year-old has two consecutive quality starts in July, going more than six innings in both games and giving up only one total run. On the season, he is 1-3 with a 3.68 ERA, a 1.33 WHIP, and 29 strikeouts in 29 innings. He should continue to hold a spot in the Toronto rotation for the foreseeable future.
Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Hunter Greene tossed seven scoreless frames on Saturday afternoon. He allowed just three hits and two free passes and struck out seven. The 24-year-old never got into much trouble as he never had more than one baserunner at a time. In his previous start, Greene allowed just one earned run across four frames. While the former second-overall pick has begun to take the next step in his development this season, he has still shown inconsistencies at times, as he has allowed at least four earned runs in five starts. Across 104 frames this season, Greene sits with a solid 3.45 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and a 43:116 BB:K ratio. Greene remains a high-upside starting pitcher in all formats and will be a popular DFS play in his next start, which is tentatively scheduled for July 11 against the Colorado Rockies.
Baltimore Orioles star catcher Adley Rutschman homered on Saturday in a 19-8 loss to the Oakland Athletics. The All-Star is hitting .288 with 16 home runs, 59 RBI, one stolen base, and 46 runs scored on the season. Rutschman has slumped recently, with two hits in 20 at-bats over the last week. Rutschman should continue to hit in the second spot in the lineup, behind Gunnar Henderson and ahead of Anthony Santander in a stacked Baltimore lineup.
Oakland Athletics outfielder Brent Rooker homered and drove in four runs Saturday in a 19-8 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Rooker is enjoying an improved season thus far, hitting .277 with 18 home runs, 53 RBI, four stolen bases, and 34 runs scored. The veteran outfielder is in the 93rd percentile for hard-hit percentage at 50.9%, and the 96th percentile for barrel percentage at 16.2%. Rooker should continue to get ample playing time in the Oakland outfield as long as he continues to hit as he has been, with a .529 batting average and three home runs in July.
Oakland Athletics catcher Shea Langeliers hit his 17th home run on Saturday in a 19-8 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Langeliers knocked in three runs on the day and also scored two runs. This marks two consecutive games in which the veteran catcher has homered. On the year, Langeliers is hitting .208 and has 17 home runs, 45 RBI, four stolen bases, and 31 runs scored. He should continue to get the bulk of the playing time behind the plate for the Oakland Athletics.
