Fernando Cruz to Return From Injured List on Monday

The New York Yankees will activate right-handed reliever Fernando Cruz (oblique) from the 15-day injured list on Monday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. Cruz last pitched on June 27 and has missed about two months with a strained left oblique, depriving the Yankees of one of their most reliable high-leverage arms. The 35-year-old has pitched to a 3.00 ERA with a 1.00 WHIP, 54:14 K:BB, nine holds, and two saves in 33 innings. The Yankees' attempt to build a super-bullpen with the acquisitions of David Bednar, Camilo Doval, and Jake Bird (now in Triple-A) at the July 31 trade deadline hasn't panned out, but getting Cruz back should help their cause.

Fernando Cruz Nearing Return from Injured List

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that reliever Fernando Cruz (oblique) will return from the injured list either Sunday or Monday, per Max Goodman of NJ Advance Media. Cruz has been on the 15-day injured list since late June due to a left oblique strain. The 35-year-old right-hander was having a solid season before getting injured, recording a 3.00 ERA and 1.00 WHIP with 54 strikeouts and two saves in 33 innings. He posted an excellent 41.2% strikeout rate and 30.5% K-BB rate. Cruz should provide some much-needed support to a Yankees bullpen that has struggled in the second half of the season, even after adding David Bednar and Camilo Doval at the trade deadline. Still, Cruz is unlikely to unseat Bednar as the closer in New York.

Fernando Cruz Could Return Early Next Week

New York Yankees right-handed reliever Fernando Cruz (oblique) is scheduled to make a four-out minor-league rehab appearance on Friday and then could be activated from the injured list for the series opener on Monday against the Washington Nationals, according to MLB.com. Cruz last pitched on Aug. 19 for Double-A Somerset. The 35-year-old veteran has been on the shelf since June 30 with a left-oblique strain but is nearing his return to the major-league bullpen. In his three rehab outings, Cruz has allowed four runs on five hits with four strikeouts and one walk in just 2 1/3 innings pitched. He will most likely be eased back in by the Yankees when he returns, but Cruz could be handling high-leverage bullpen work by the end of the 2025 season. The Puerto Rican hurler had a 3.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, two saves and 54 strikeouts in 33 innings for the Yanks before his oblique injury.

Fernando Cruz Ready for Rehab Assignment

New York Yankees relief pitcher Fernando Cruz (oblique) threw 19 pitches in a live batting practice session on Monday and is looking at a three-appearance rehab stint before being activated, reports Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. He last pitched in a major league game on June 27, before landing on the injured list with a strained oblique. Rehab assignments typically go much quicker for relievers than starters since they don't have to wait almost a week between outings, so Cruz could potentially be activated as soon as next week if things go according to plan. He was very good prior to the injury, posting a 3.00 ERA and 1.00 WHIP with 54 strikeouts in 33 innings.

Fernando Cruz to Throw to Live Batters on Sunday

New York Yankees right-handed reliever Fernando Cruz (oblique) is set to throw a live bullpen session on Sunday at Double-A Somerset. The 35-year-old had recently completed mound work without any setbacks or complications. If he can have a successful session here, there is a good chance that a rehab assignment could take place soon afterward. Cruz has been an outstanding option for the Yankees out of the bullpen this season. Over 33 innings pitched, he has recorded two saves, nine holds, and posted a 41.2% strikeout rate. When he returns, he will join an incredibly talented bullpen, giving New York another solid option near the end of games.

Fernando Cruz to Throw From Mound This Week

New York Yankees reliever Fernando Cruz (oblique) is scheduled to throw off a mound either Thursday or Friday as he works back from a strained left oblique. It'll be the right-hander's first time doing so since he went on the 15-day injured list a month ago. Cruz hasn't pitched since June 27, which has deprived the Yankees of one of their only reliable setup men. The 35-year-old has posted a 3.00 ERA with a 1.00 WHIP, 54 strikeouts, 14 walks, and nine holds in 33 innings. With Cruz possibly out until September, the Yankees are scouring the market for bullpen help in advance of Thursday's trade deadline.

Fernando Cruz Resumes a Throwing Program

New York Yankees relief pitcher Fernando Cruz (oblique) is still a ways from returning to the Yankees' pen, but he has resumed a throwing program. Manager Aaron Boone said that Cruz felt "awesome" after his last session, but also acknowledged it's a slower program because Cruz is not fully recovered from his left oblique strain. Cruz originally sustained the injury during a medicine ball workout in the weight room, and he has been sidelined since the end of June. The fact that he's throwing is a good sign that he remains on track to return at some point in August. It isn't clear if he'll need a rehab stint or not before returning to New York to join the Yankees.

Fernando Cruz Progressing in Recovery from Oblique Injury

New York Yankees reliever Fernando Cruz (oblique) is recovering well from his left oblique strain and could resume playing catch over the weekend, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. Cruz has been on the 15-day injured list since late June with what was diagnosed as a "high-grade" strain, and he's not expected to return until August. He's a valuable high-leverage reliever for the Yankees. Before getting hurt, Cruz had pitched to a 3.00 ERA and 1.00 WHIP with 54 strikeouts and two saves in 33 innings. As long as Devin Williams and Luke Weaver are healthy, Cruz should not be expected to earn more than the occasional save chance for the Yankees.

Fernando Cruz Suffers a High-Grade Oblique Strain

New York Yankees relief pitcher Fernando Cruz (oblique) will miss significant time after suffering what manager Aaron Boone classified as a "high-grade" oblique strain. Cruz was placed on the 15-day injured list before Monday's game, but could be sidelined significantly longer. The 35-year-old righty has been a key part of the Yankees' bullpen this season with a 3.00 ERA, 2.45 FIP, and 54 strikeouts in his 33 innings. He has been one of the team's top high-leverage arms, and while he is out, the options like Devin Williams, Luke Weaver, and Mark Leiter Jr. will have to step up and carry an even larger workload. More holds and saves could be available for that trio while Cruz is out, and the Yankees will hope that Cruz can return late in the season, although no firm timetable has been established.

Yankees Place Fernando Cruz on 15-Day Injured List With Shoulder Inflammation

The New York Yankees placed reliever Fernando Cruz (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list on Thursday with right-shoulder inflammation, five days after feeling pain in his shoulder in an outing against the New York Mets. Cruz said he's been pitching through inflammation in his shoulder for the last three weeks. The 35-year-old veteran received a cortisone shot in his arm but said an MRI exam didn't show any serious damage. He said he threw from distances of 60-70 feet on Thursday. Manager Aaron Boone said Cruz will join the team on their upcoming nine-game road trip and could start throwing off a mound shortly. Cruz, who is known for his splitter, has been a key relief arm for the Yanks so far in 2025 with a 2.66 ERA, 35 strikeouts and two saves in his 21 appearances out of the bullpen. To replace Cruz on the active roster, Brent Headrick was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
