Houston Astros relief pitcher Hector Neris has declined his $8.5 million player option for the 2024 season and is now a free agent, according to a source. Neris should be in line for a nice deal on the open market this winter after recording a stellar 1.71 ERA (3.83 FIP) and 1.05 WHIP while picking up two saves, walking 31 and striking out 77 in 68 1/3 innings over his 71 appearances out of Houston's bullpen during the regular season. The 34-year-old right-hander will receive a $1 million buyout after declining his option. His 2023 campaign was the best so far of his 10-year big-league career, so it makes sense for him to go out and try to capitalize on it on the open market. Neris has 89 career saves, so he could be an option as a primary closer for a team looking to upgrade the back end of their bullpen.
Houston Astros relief pitcher Hector Neris notched his second save of the season in Monday's 6-4 win over the Cubs. Neris came in to close things out up by two and turned in a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts. Ryan Pressly, the team's closer has pitched a lot lately including yesterday's game, so Neris was simply filling in. He has pitched well, going 2-1 with six holds, a 1.47 ERA, and a 10.80 K/9 rate. However, his fantasy value will be limited so long as Pressly is pitching well and remains healthy.

Astros closer Ryan Pressly (illness) was under the weather and unavailable for Saturday's game. Chicago scored a run off Neris through an RBI single by Eloy Jimenez. The 33-year-old shook it off and struck out Yoan Moncada in the ninth frame to seal the win. Pressly is expected to return to the mound soon, while Neris will return to his usual setup role. Neris is mainly worth rostering in leagues that account for the category saves and holds.
