Jesús Luzardo News
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo (elbow) is scheduled to make a minor-league rehab start with Single-A Jupiter on Sunday in Port St Lucie. After tossing 22 pitches in Thursday's bullpen session, Luzardo has a target of four innings and 60 pitches for Sunday's appearance as he works his way back from tightness in his left elbow. Assuming all goes well there, and he only needs one outing in the minors before rejoining Miami's rotation, Luzardo is a candidate to start at some point during next weekend's three-game series at home versus the division-rival Philadelphia Phillies. With the 26-year-old former top prospect struggling to a 6.58 ERA and 1.42 WHIP while fanning 27 batters and walking 13 through 26 innings (five starts) for the Fish this season, Luzardo would be a risky fantasy play across the board if he faces this difficult matchup for his first start back.
Miami Marlins left-hander Jesus Luzardo (elbow) threw a successful bullpen session on Thursday, but he won't be accompanying the team on their upcoming road trip that starts on Friday. Instead, Luzardo will make a minor-league rehab start at some point. If the 26-year-old southpaw has a successful rehab outing in the minors, he could return from the 15-day injured list and start when he's eligible to return on May 10 against the Philadelphia Phillies. He's trying to return from a mild left flexor strain and should remain rostered in all fantasy formats despite a disappointing start to the year. Through his first five starts in 2024, Luzardo has gone 0-2 with a 6.58 ERA (5.06 FIP) and 1.42 WHIP while walking 13 and striking out 27 in 26 innings pitched.
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo (elbow) is throwing up to 90 feet on Tuesday. Luzardo plans to play catch again on Wednesday and then throw a bullpen session thereafter. Barring any setbacks, he hopes to then make a minor-league rehab start and rejoin the major-league club. It sounds like the 26-year-old southpaw is eyeing a return from the 15-day injured list close to when he's first eligible, which is certainly an encouraging sign. Luzardo is recovering from a mild left flexor muscle strain, and he struggled to a 6.58 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, and 27:13 K:BB over 26 innings (five starts) for the Fish before hitting the shelf. Fantasy managers should keep top prospect Max Meyer glued to watchlists in the meantime, as it's only a matter of time before he's recalled to the big leagues after submitting a 2.12 ERA, 0.82 WHIP, and 14:3 K:BB across 17 frames (three starts) this year.

Before 2023, Miami Marlins starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo hadn't surpassed more than 100 1/3 IP in a season, but last year, the lefty tallied 178 2/3 IP. The former third-round pick notched a career-high in Ks with 208, twelfth-most in the majors, a 1.21 WHIP, 3.55 FIP, and 20.6% K-BB% on his way to collecting 10 wins. Luzardo also posted a top-12 SwStr% (14.1%) and Contact% (70.8%). He went from 6.1% BB% in the first half of 2023 to 9.6% in the second half, but should lower the BB% as he matures and gets used to pitching more innings. Another bugaboo is the long ball. The southpaw allowed an 11.5% HR/FB in 2023. FGDC projections for 2024 have him going 11-10 with a 3.74 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 18.8% K-BB%, and 208 K in 181 IP. His NFBC ADP has him going around pick 90, but RotoBaller is very bullish, ranking him at 74. It'd be no surprise to see Luzardo go to his first All-Star game in 2024, and it's no wonder his name is being tossed around as a possible trade target. If he gets an upgrade in environment, it could boost his projected win total, increasing his fantasy value too.
