Mariners Acquire Jose A. Ferrer from the Nationals

The Seattle Mariners acquired left-handed reliever Jose A. Ferrer from the Washington Nationals in exchange for catching prospect Harry Ford. The 25-year-old has thrown 142 1/3 career innings with a 4.36 ERA (3.24 SIERA), 121 strikeouts, and a 1.26 WHIP. In 2025, he abandoned his four-seam fastball and posted a career-best 21.9% strikeout rate alongside a career-low 4.9% walk rate. Overall, he recorded 11 saves for Washington last season, finishing with a 4.48 ERA across 76 1/3 innings. Seattle apparently felt it needed another left-hander for the back end of its bullpen and paid a steep price to get one. According to MLB Pipeline, Ford is a top-50 prospect and widely regarded as one of the best up-and-coming catchers in the minor leagues.

Harry Ford Traded to the Nationals

The Washington Nationals acquired catching prospect Harry Ford by trading away left-handed reliever Jose A. Ferrer to the Seattle Mariners. The 22-year-old is an MLB Pipeline top-50 prospect who slashed .283/.408/.460 with 16 home runs, 68 runs, 74 RBI, seven steals, and a 125 wRC+ in 458 plate appearances at AAA last year. The Mariners already have All-Star Cal Raleigh behind the dish, which apparently made Ford expendable. For the Nationals, they land a top prospect that can quickly take over for Keibert Ruiz and Riley Adams. Ruiz hasn't come close to replicating his 2023 breakout season, when he slugged 18 home runs with a .274 xBA and a 10.3% strikeout rate. Last year, Ruiz hit only two home runs in 267 plate appearances while battling symptoms from a concussion he sustained on June 23. Ford was called up at the end of last year and may be the Nationals' starting catcher at some point in 2026.

Jose A. Ferrer Records Fourth Save

Washington Nationals relief pitcher Jose A. Ferrer locked down his fourth save of the season on Thursday in a 9-3 win over the Mets, allowing one hit and striking out three in a four-out save. This isn't a typical score you'd expect after a save was recorded, but Ferrer entered the game with a 5-3 lead in the top of the eighth before the Nationals tacked on four additional runs in the bottom of the inning. The lefty has now successfully shut the door in four straight save opportunities and hasn't allowed a run since Aug. 3, a span of seven scoreless appearances. The 25-year-old remains the favorite closing option in Washington for the time being after Kyle Finnegan was dealt at the trade deadline.

Jose A. Ferrer Notches Third Save

Washington Nationals reliever Jose A. Ferrer made quick work of the New York Mets in a 5-4 win on Wednesday to collect his third save of the year. The left-hander tossed a scoreless, one-hit ninth inning and finished off the Mets on just seven pitches. Ferrer has gone 3-for-3 in save opportunities since the Nationals traded closer Kyle Finnegan to the Detroit Tigers on July 31 and recorded six straight scoreless appearances. Over 61 2/3 innings, Ferrer has registered a 4.38 ERA (2.92 FIP) with a 1.23 WHIP, 51 strikeouts, and 12 walks.

Jose A. Ferrer Records Five-Out Save

Washington Nationals reliever Jose A. Ferrer closed out the San Francisco Giants on Saturday to pick up his first save of the year in a 4-2 victory. The left-hander entered in the eighth with a three-run lead, one out, and the bases loaded. He allowed a sacrifice fly to Wilmer Flores before striking out Matt Chapman to end the inning. Ferrer then overcame two ninth-inning singles by inducing a game-ending double play from Patrick Bailey. He wound up needing 19 pitches (13 strikes) to get five outs. Ferrer's save is the first for the Nationals since they traded closer Kyle Finnegan to the Detroit Tigers at the July 31 deadline. He seems likely to get more save opportunities down the stretch, although they could be few and far between for the last-place Nationals. The 25-year-old's 4.79 ERA and 7.67 K/9 over 56 1/3 frames are underwhelming, but Ferrer has shown great control (1.92 per nine), and his 3.00 FIP and 3.24 xFIP suggest he has deserved better than his bottom-line results.

Jose A. Ferrer the Favorite for Saves Now in D.C.?

MASN's Mark Zuckerman writes that the back end of the Washington Nationals bullpen is going to be a problem the rest of the year after they shipped closer Kyle Finnegan and relievers Andrew Chafin and Luis Garcia away at this week's trade deadline. Zuckerman mentions Jose A. Ferrer as the potential favorite for saves now, at least against lefty-heavy lineups. But against righties late in games, the team could go with Cole Henry or Zach Brzykcy. Ferrer is probably the first target in deep fantasy leagues off the waiver wire if you're desperate for saves, but as Zuckerman notes, an already shaky bullpen just got worse with two months left in the season. Ferrer is a 25-year-old southpaw gets a lot of whiff on his changeup, but he's struggled to a 4.78 ERA and 1.22 WHIP with a weak 20.1% strikeout rate in 52 2/3 frames this year.
