Jose Barrero Starting In Center Field

Cincinnati Reds infielder Jose Barrero is starting in center field and is hitting ninth in the batting order on Friday against the New York Yankees and right-hander Clarke Schmidt. With rookie Matt McLain taking over the 6 in Cincinnati, Barrero has to find other avenues for playing time with the Reds. The 25-year-old hasn't been much of a fantasy commodity through 32 games this year, and batting in the nine-hole makes him completely avoidable for fantasy lineups. Barrero enters Friday's contest against the Yanks with a .237 average (23-for-97) with seven doubles, one home run, 12 RBI, three stolen bases and 10 runs scored in 109 plate appearances.

Jose Barrero Leaves Monday's Game With Hamstring Tightness

Cincinnati Reds outfielder Jose Barrero left his team's 7-6 win over the Chicago Cubs on Monday with tightness in his right hamstring, according to the team. Barrero was pulled during the second inning after appearing to tweak his hamstring while running the bases following a leadoff single. He was replaced in the lineup by Jason Vosler, who went on to hit a three-run homer. Barrero can be considered day-to-day for the time being.

Jose Barrero Out Of The Lineup Again

Cincinnati Reds shortstop Jose Barrero is out of the starting lineup for a second straight game on Friday against the St. Louis Cardinals. Barrero is hitting just .160 (20-for-125) with two home runs, 10 RBI and three stolen bases in 35 games for the Reds this year, and he's also gone just 7-for-39 (.180) with 17 strikeouts in 11 games in the month of September. With Barrero out again on Friday, Kyle Farmer is starting at shortstop and batting third, while Spencer Steer will get the start at the hot corner and bat eighth against Cardinals right-hander Jack Flaherty. Donovan Solano is also starting at first base and batting fifth in the order.

Reds Recall Jose Barrero

The Cincinnati Reds recalled shortstop Jose Barrero from Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday. One of the organization's most promising prospects, Barrero made his Major League debut for the Reds last season, hitting .200 with a .286 on-base percentage and a stolen base in 56 plate appearances. So far in 2022, the 24-year-old is batting .209 with a .262 on-base percentage, nine home runs, and five stolen bases for Cincinnati's Triple-A affiliate. He's certainly a name to watch in dynasty leagues but is likely only an option for fantasy managers in deeper redraft leagues at the moment.

Jose Barrero Undergoes Surgery, Out Six Weeks

Cincinnati Reds shortstop Jose Barrero (hand) had successful surgery on the hamate bone in his left hand and is expected to be out for six weeks. Barrero was hoping to compete for the starting job at shortstop to open the season, but that will now be Kyle Farmer's job early in 2022. The 23-year-old has hit just .197/.242/.248 with no home runs and five RBI in 124 plate appearances over his first 45 big-league games the last two years in Cincinnati, but he could earn some playing time at the 6 eventually over Farmer once he's fully healthy. Barrero can probably be ignored in shallow mixed leagues this season.

Jose Barrero To Miss Six Weeks

Cincinnati Reds shortstop Jose Barrero (hand) is expected to be sidelined six weeks. He was diagnosed with a hamate injury in his left hand. This is a shame considering the 23-year-old was expected to compete for the starting shortstop spot in spring training. The young infielder has struggled during his brief time in the big leagues. However, he hit well during his time in the minors last season. He should get an opportunity to play in Cincinnati at some point this season. In the meantime, it sounds like Kyle Farmer has won the Opening Day shortstop gig by default.

Jose Barrero To Compete For Starting Spot

Cincinnati Reds shortstop Jose Barrero is expected to compete for the starting gig in spring training, according to manager David Bell. It's worth noting that Bell mentioned Kyle Farmer is likely to enter spring training as the starting shortstop. Although, Barrero will get a legitimate chance to earn the starting job. The 23-year-old struggled with the Reds last season, but played well in the minors. He hit .303/.380/.539 with 19 homers, 66 RBI and 16 stolen bases between Double-A and Triple-A last season. He could be someone worth looking at in deep leagues.

Cincinnati Recalls Prospect Jose Barrero

The Cincinnati Reds recalled infielder Jose Barrero from Triple-A Louisville on Monday after placing outfielder Jesse Winker on the 10-day injured list. Barrero is regarded as one of the top positional prospects in the Cincinnati system, ranking as the No. 82 overall prospects in baseball by MLB Pipeline. Barrero got a taste of big-league action in 2020, back before he changed his name and was known as Jose Garcia. He hit just .194 with 26 strikeouts in 67 at-bats. Barrero has since improved his plate discipline in Triple-A this season, hitting .305 with 11 homers, 28 runs, 34 RBI, and seven steals in 40 games. Barrero might not play every day for the Reds this time around but he needs to be scooped up in all dynasty leagues if he is available.

Jose Garcia To Open Season In Minors

Despite impressing early in camp, Cincinnati Reds shortstop Jose Garcia lost his bid to make the big league team once Eugenio Suarez proved that he could handle shortstop. Garcia was optioned to Cincinnati's Triple-A affiliate in Louisville last week where he will bide his time. The young infielder was recently graded to have the best arm in the team's farm system by MLB.com. Garcia skipped from Single-A all to way to the big leagues last season and should get a shot with the Reds at some point during the 2021 campaign.

Tyler Stephenson, Jose Garcia Have Chance To Make Club In 2021

Cincinnati Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson and shortstop Jose Garcia both played integral roles in helping the club reach the postseason down the stretch in 2020, with president of baseball operations Dick Williams confirming Friday that the duo belong on a big league field. Stephenson, the clubs No. 4 prospect per MLB Pipeline, and Garcia, No. 6, will both enter Spring Training with the chance to break camp with the club. Stephensons path to playing time is muddled by the duo of Tucker Barnhart and Curt Casali, who figure to share catching duties. Garcia has the inside track at the starting job as of now, but the Reds may be active either in the free-agent (Didi Gregorius) or trade (Francisco Lindor) market to acquire an established shortstop.
