Red Sox Showing Interest in J.T. Realmuto

Acquiring a catcher is not among the Boston Red Sox's top offseason priorities, but they are showing interest in free-agent catcher J.T. Realmuto, according to people briefed on the team's talks. The BoSox just acquired veteran starting pitcher Sonny Gray to bolster their rotation behind ace lefty Garrett Crochet, and re-signing third baseman Alex Bregman is another primary goal. The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and Jen McCaffrey say that the best guess is still that Realmuto will re-sign with the Philadelphia Phillies, the team he's been with since 2019. The Phils don't have an internal replacement for the veteran backstop, which makes them motivated to keep him. In Boston, he'd be more of a complementary player as he enters his age-35 season in tandem with Carlos Narvaez. Realmuto is projected to land a three-year, $45 million contract on the open market. He'd be a clear offensive upgrade over Connor Wong, who is currently Boston's No. 2 catcher.

J.T. Realmuto Exits Tuesday With Right Index Finger Contusion

Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto (finger) exited Tuesday's 6-5 extra-inning loss to the Marlins with a right index finger contusion, per Philly Inquirer's Lochlahn March. Realmuto was hit in the hand when receiving a pitch and was later pinch-hit for by Rafael Marchan. Realmuto went 0-for-3 with a strikeout. The Phillies said X-rays were negative, so fantasy managers should wait to see if Realmuto is in Wednesday's lineup. The 24-year-old veteran has put together an uninspiring fantasy season, slashing .259/.317/.389 with 12 home runs, 57 runs scored, 52 RBI, and seven stolen bases in 538 plate appearances.

J.T. Realmuto Gets Sunday Off

Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto will hit the bench for his team's game on Sunday afternoon against the Los Angeles Angels. It's an afternoon game following a night game, so this is likely just a planned day off for the veteran backstop. Rafael Marchan will take his place behind the plate and bat eighth. In 332 plate appearances so far this season, Realmuto has slashed .270/.325/.384 with five home runs, 32 RBI, 36 runs scored, and five stolen bases. The 34-year-old remains a solid source of batting average and speed (relative to other catchers), but his power output has fallen significantly from his peak. Realmuto's .114 ISO is his lowest since a 30-plate appearance sample size in 2014, his first year in the big leagues.

Bryce Harper, J.T. Realmuto Sitting for Game 2 of Doubleheader

Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper and catcher J.T. Realmuto are both on the bench for Game 2 of the team's doubleheader on Wednesday against the visiting San Diego Padres. Rookie Otto Kemp will start at first base and bat sixth, while Rafael Marchan will do the catching and hit eighth against Padres right-hander Dylan Cease. Harper made his return from the injured list from right-wrist inflammation for the series-opening win on Monday against SD and went 0-for-2 with a walk. He went 1-for-4 with two walks in a 6-4 loss in Game 1 on Wednesday. The Phillies won't overwhelm the two-time MVP right after his return, but he should be back for Friday's series opener against the Cincinnati Reds. Realmuto went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in the Game 1 loss. Realmuto came into the day with just five hits in his last 27 at-bats in seven games since June 22.

J.T. Realmuto Out Against Astros

Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto will take a seat for Thursday's series finale in Houston against the Astros at Daikin Park. Rafael Marchan is behind the plate and will catch left-hander Cristopher Sanchez while hitting eighth against Astros right-hander Hunter Brown. The 34-year-old Realmuto will get a breather after playing in each of the team's last five games. Realmuto has gone hitless in his last three games but is hitting .288 (19-for-66) with three doubles, six RBI and a steal in 18 games in the month of June after a very slow start to the 2025 season for his standards. He's no longer one of the best catchers in fantasy, and his counting stats are way down with only five homers and 27 RBI in 66 games. Marchan doesn't really move the DFS fantasy needle. The 26-year-old switch-hitting backstop has gone 8-for-49 (.163) with one homer in limited playing time.

J.T. Realmuto Resting on Thursday

Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto will take a seat on the bench for Thursday's series finale against the division-rival Miami Marlins. Rafael Marchan will work behind the plate for left-hander Cristopher Sanchez and will bat eighth against Marlins right-hander Edward Cabrera. Realmuto got off to a very slow start with the lumber early on in 2025, but he's looked better as the weather has warmed up and is hitting .313 (15-for-48) with three doubles, six RBI and eight runs scored in 13 games in the month of June. It has raised the 34-year-old veteran backstop's season slash line to .241/.308/.364 with a below-average .642 OPS. Realmuto has also contributed only five long balls, although his xBA of .257 foreshadows more positive regression coming this summer. Marchan should be avoided for DFS lineups down at the bottom of the batting order.

J.T. Realmuto Sitting Out of Series Opener Against Marlins

Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto will take a seat for Monday's series opener against the division-rival Miami Marlins on the road. Rafael Marchan will catch rookie right-hander Mick Abel and will bat eighth against Marlins right-hander Sandy Alcantara. Realmuto gets a day off after starting in each of the team's last six games. The 34-year-old veteran got off to a slow start this year but is starting to pick things up in June, going 13-for-39 (.333) at the plate with three doubles, five RBI and seven runs scored in 11 games played. Realmuto hasn't homered since May 21 but does have four multi-hit games in his last six contests. Fantasy managers are hoping he can keep this up to close out the first half. Marchan will be a poor DFS sleeper choice near the bottom of the batting order. The 26-year-old has gone 7-for-42 with a homer and five RBI in a backup role in 2025.

J.T. Realmuto Back in Phillies Lineup

Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto (groin) is returning to the starting lineup for Friday's contest against the hosting Pittsburgh Pirates and left-hander Bailey Falter, doing the catching for right-hander Joe Ross and hitting fifth. Realmuto took a foul ball off his groin late in Wednesday's game and was held out of Thursday's game as a result. Now that the 34-year-old veteran backstop is back in the lineup, he'll try to break out of a current slump that has seen him record only four hits in his last eight games played. Realmuto's .254 expected batting average point to some positive regression coming for the three-time All-Star, but so far in 2025, he's been a disappointment for his fantasy managers. He enters Friday's game slashing .226/.297/.358 with five home runs, 22 RBI, 18 runs and four stolen bases. Realmuto is hitless in two career at-bats against Falter.

J.T. Realmuto Out With Groin Injury

Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto (groin) is absent from the team's starting lineup for Thursday's series finale against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Center. Rafael Marchan is behind the plate to catch left-hander Jesus Luzardo and will bat ninth against Blue Jays right-hander Chris Bassitt. Realmuto took a foul ball to his groin in the ninth inning in Wednesday's loss in Toronto and was removed from the game. The 34-year-old is hopeful that he'll miss just one start, so fantasy managers should be getting the veteran catcher back for Friday's series opener in Pittsburgh against the Pirates. He'll be available only in an emergency situation on Thursday. The three-time All-Star has shown his age so far in 2025 and is hitting just .226 (43-for-190) with five home runs, 22 RBI, 18 runs and four stolen bases, although he does have three hits in 10 at-bats in his first three games in the month of June.

J.T. Realmuto Leaves After Taking Foul Ball to Groin

Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto (groin) took a foul ball off his groin in the ninth inning in Wednesday's 2-1 loss to the hosting Toronto Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre and was removed from the game early. Realmuto was down on the ground for a few minutes before walking into the clubhouse under a trainer's assistance. Before departing prematurely, the veteran backstop went 1-for-3 at the plate with a single and a strikeout. It's likely that the 34-year-old will be held out of Thursday's series finale in Toronto, but Realmuto could return to action this weekend for a series in Pittsburgh against the Pirates. Any time missed by Realmuto would push Rafael Marchan into a starting role behind the plate. Realmuto came into Wednesday's contest hitting just .225 with five home runs, 22 RBI, 18 runs and four steals in his 187 at-bats, although his xBA of .252 points to positive regression going forward.
