Rays Acquire Ken Waldichuk From the Braves

The Tampa Bay Rays acquired left-hander Ken Waldichuk and infielder Brett Wisely from the Atlanta Braves on Monday in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations, according to Rays Communications. Waldichuk will head back to the American League after the Braves claimed the 28-year-old southpaw off waivers last week. He missed the entire 2024 season and some of 2025 due to Tommy John surgery. The former fifth-rounder had a rough 8.65 ERA, 2.06 WHIP, and a 64:42 K:BB ratio in 51 innings at Triple-A in 2025. In his two MLB seasons with the Athletics, Waldichuk had a 5.28 ERA (5.10 FIP) and 1.49 WHIP with a 21% strikeout rate and 10.3% walk rate in 175 2/3 innings in 42 appearances (29 starts). Waldichuk will most likely begin the 2026 season at Triple-A Durham, where he'll provide starting and long-relief depth for Tampa.

Ken Waldichuk Gets Designated for Assignment

Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Ken Waldichuk was designated for assignment by the organization on Saturday. This is a short-lived stint in Atlanta for Waldichuk, who was claimed by the organization off waivers from the Athletics on Thursday. The team needed to make room for newly signed reliever Tyler Kinley, and Waldichuk is the odd man out. The southpaw missed all of the 2024 season due to Tommy John surgery. He posted an ugly 8.17 ERA, 1.96 WHIP, and 68/42 K/BB ratio across 17 games (16 starts) in Triple-A with the Athletics in 2025. He hasn't pitched in the MLB since the 2023 season with the A's, where he posted a 5.36 ERA in 35 games. The former fifth-round pick will likely be organizational depth if he's claimed by another team.

Ken Waldichuk Activated, Optioned to Triple-A

The Athletics have reinstated left-hander Ken Waldichuk (elbow) from the 60-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Las Vegas. Waldichuk, whose 30-day rehab assignment window ended, will get more work in the minors in the wake of May 2024 Tommy John surgery. The 27-year-old has struggled to a 7.63 ERA with 17:16 K:BB in 15 1/3 minor league innings this season. He last pitched in the majors in 2023 and put up a 5.36 ERA with 132 strikeouts against 71 walks across 141 innings (35 appearances, 22 starts).

Ken Waldichuk will Need Additional Rehab Starts

Athletics left-handed pitcher Ken Waldichuk (elbow) will need to make a few more rehab starts before the team considers bringing him back to the major leagues. Already with six innings pitched while with Triple-A Las Vegas, the 27-year-old struggled in his last outing. He surrendered five earned runs on two hits and three walks across 2/3 of an inning in Tuesday's outing against El Paso. The southpaw already surpassed 50 pitches in his previous outings, so this now looks to be more about his mechanics than anything. On the shelf since having Tommy John Surgery in May of 2024, Waldichuk seems like an option for the Athletics down the stretch, but shouldn't be considered in anything shallower than a 15-team league.

Ken Waldichuk to Make Another Rehab Start on Saturday

MLB.com's Martin Gallegos reports that Athletics left-hander Ken Waldichuk (elbow) will make his next minor-league rehab start on Saturday for Triple-A Las Vegas. Waldichuk threw three shutout innings with four strikeouts in his first rehab start with Single-A Stockton on Sunday. The 27-year-old southpaw has been out all season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in May of last year, but he could be ready to join the A's at some point in the second half of the season. But after missing all of last year, fantasy managers shouldn't be expecting much from him the rest of this year. It's not like Waldichuk has been fantasy relevant to begin with after making his MLB debut for the Athletics in 2022. In 42 big-league appearances (29 starts), he's recorded a 5.28 ERA (5.10 FIP) and 1.49 WHIP with an 8.5 K/9 mark and 4.1 BB/9 in 175 2/3 frames.

Ken Waldichuk Will Start a Rehab Assignment, Brady Basso Pulled Off Rehab

Athletics starting pitcher Ken Waldichuk (elbow) continues to progress in his recovery and will start a rehab assignment Sunday in Single-A for the Stockton Ports. Waldichuk missed all of last season with his elbow injury and underwent Tommy John surgery last May. The 27-year-old lefty went 4-9 in 35 games in 2023, including 22 starts. He compiled a 5.36 ERA and 5.30 FIP, while totaling 132 strikeouts in 141 innings. Before arriving in the majors in 2022, Waldichuk had a 6-4 record with a 2.84 ERA and 3.45 FIP in 21 starts in the minors. He was acquired by the A's from the Yankees in a trade deadline deal that sent Frankie Montas to the Bronx. Waldichuk will look to work his way back into a rotation spot in the second half. In other A's pitching news, lefty reliever Brady Basso (shoulder) was pulled off rehab and will be reevaluated. He has been sidelined all season with a shoulder strain.

Ken Waldichuk to Throw a Sim Game Next

Athletics left-hander Ken Waldichuk (elbow) threw a live batting practice session on Wednesday at Sutter Health Park and is scheduled to move to simulated games next, according to MLB.com. Waldichuk had Tommy John surgery in May of last year and is still working his way back from that procedure. He's currently on the 60-day injured list but could make his 2025 season debut at some point in July if he can avoid a setback as he continues to ramp up his arm. The 27-year-old southpaw still will need to go on a minor-league rehab assignment. The former fifth-round pick by the New York Yankees in 2019 out of Saint Mary's College made 42 appearances (29 starts) in his first two MLB seasons in 2022 and 2023 and went 6-11 with a 5.28 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 165:81 K:BB in 175 2/3 innings. Fantasy managers in mixed leagues can continue to ignore him for now.

Ken Waldichuk Starting Bullpen Progression

MLB.com's Martin Gallegos reports that Athletics left-handed reliever Ken Waldichuk (elbow) has been cleared to start a bullpen progression in camp. Waldichuk is working his way back from Tommy John surgery and an internal-brace procedure that he had in May of last year. If the 27-year-old southpaw can avoid any setbacks in his recovery from elbow reconstruction, there's a chance he could be available to rejoin the A's bullpen t the tail end of the first half of the 2025 season. The plan for the time being is to have Waldichuk stretched out as a starter, but the most likely scenario is that he'll make his debut this year as a reliever. A pitcher that already had questionable command and control could struggle in his return such a serious arm surgery, making him one to avoid in fantasy once he's back. Waldichuk has a 5.28 ERA, 1.49 WHIP, one save and a 165:81 K:BB in 175 2/3 innings in his two seasons in the majors.

Ken Waldichuk Undergoes Tommy John Surgery

Oakland Athletics left-hander Ken Waldichuk (elbow) underwent Tommy John surgery on Wednesday in Los Angeles with Dr. Neal ElAttrache. Waldichuk will miss the rest of the 2024 season and probably won't be a candidate to return to games until around midseason in 2025. The 26-year-old southpaw was diagnosed with a torn UCL in his left elbow last October and underwent a minor surgery last year with hopes that he could avoid Tommy John surgery. That didn't end up being the case, so Waldichuk will be shut down for the foreseeable future. The former fifth-round pick by the New York Yankees in 2019 out of Saint Mary's has recorded a 5.28 ERA (5.10 FIP) and 1.49 WHIP with 81 walks and 165 strikeouts in 175 2/3 innings over 42 appearances (29 starts) in his two major-league seasons in Oakland.

Ken Waldichuk Shut Down Indefinitely

Oakland Athletics left-hander Ken Waldichuk (elbow) had a setback after he faced hitters in a 25-pitch live batting practice session on April 29 and has not thrown since. Waldichuk will be re-evaluated in the next week and is shut down indefinitely. The 26-year-old southpaw opened the year on the 60-day injured list while recovering from a left-elbow sprain, but this recent setback is going to keep him out at least into June. He's merely a name to monitor in AL-only leagues while he works to get healthy. Waldichuk won't be a lock for the big-league rotation when he's finally healthy, either, after going 4-9 with a 5.36 ERA (5.30 FIP) and 1.56 WHIP with 71 walks and 132 K's in 141 innings over 35 outings (22 starts) last year. A relief role is probably his best path to work in the majors if he can eventually make it back before the All-Star break.
