The Baltimore Orioles announced on Friday that they acquired infielder Luis Vazquez from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for cash considerations. The 25-year-old Puerto Rican infielder was recently designated for assignment by the Cubs and will now head to the American League as infield depth for Baltimore. Because he has minor-league options remaining, the expectation is that he will open the 2025 campaign at Triple-A Norfolk. The Cubs selected Vazquez with a 14th-round pick in 2017, and he finally made his major-league debut in 2024 in Chicago. Vazquez appeared in only 11 games, though, and went 1-for-12 with an RBI, two runs scored and six strikeouts in the Show. At Triple-A Iowa, he slashed .263/.347/.432 with eight home runs, 24 RBI and 33 runs scored in 64 games played. Vazquez will remain off the fantasy radar with the O's.
According to Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Cubs have designated infielder Luis Vazquez for assignment. This transaction opened a roster spot for infielder Jon Berti, who the team officially signed to a one-year contract earlier on Tuesday. Vazquez was a former 14th-round selection by the Cubs in the 2017 MLB Draft. The 25-year-old made his big league debut in the 2024 campaign. Across his brief 11-game stint in the majors, he tallied just one hit with one RBI. Across 168 contests with Triple-A Iowa, the young infielder has held a .247/.339/.406 line. Last season, he held a strong .264/.347/.432 line across 64 games with Triple-A Iowa. Vazquez will likely draw interest in waivers, given his solid play at the top level of the minor leagues.
Chicago Cubs shortstop prospect Luis Vazquez (undisclosed) went deep twice in his return to Triple-A on Thursday evening. Vazquez has been sidelined for just over a month due to an undisclosed injury. Vazquez earned a brief taste of the majors earlier this summer but went 0-for-1 in his lone at-bat. At Triple-A, he has held a .261/.351/.422 line through 58 games. However, across his past 11 games at Triple-A Iowa, Vazquez has posted a strong .316/.395/.579, which shows he began to turn the corner before the injury and has already picked up right where he left off yesterday evening. Vazquez could get another opportunity in the majors later this summer if he continues to perform well at Iowa.
Chicago Cubs infielder Luis Vazquez has reportedly been called up from Triple-A Iowa on Sunday. The assumption is that infielder Nico Hoerner (hamstring) is headed to the injured list with Vazquez joining the roster. The 22-year-old was slashing .270/.369/.409 with three home runs and 11 RBI in Triple-A this season. The Cubs haven't announced who is going down to the minors as a corresponding roster move. The expectation is that Vazquez should get significant playing time until the Cubs middle infield gets healthy again.
