Mets Reinstate Marcus Semien From the Injured List

The New York Mets announced on Thursday that they reinstated infielder Marcus Semien (hip) from the 10-day injured list and designated infielder Zack Short for assignment in a corresponding move. The Mets have not released their starting lineup for Thursday's series opener against the division-rival Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park, but Semien should be back at the keystone to face veteran right-hander Aaron Nola. Semien is back from a Grade 3 hip-flexor strain that landed him on the IL on June 25. Despite a rough first half of the season, he should pick up as the Mets' starting second baseman to begin the second half, although fantasy managers in deeper leagues may want to keep him on their benches on Thursday against Nolan, whom he's hitting .111 in his career against in nine at-bats. The 35-year-old Semien slashed just .214/.271/.341 with a .613 OPS in 290 first-half at-bats, adding nine home runs, 29 RBI, 30 runs scored, and six stolen bases across 80 games and 318 plate appearances. His offensive profile is nearing rock bottom in his first year in Queens.

Marcus Semien Starts Rehab Assignment on Sunday

New York Mets second baseman Marcus Semien (hip) started his minor-league rehab assignment with Double-A Binghamton and went 2-for-3 at the plate with a three-run home run and a strikeout. Semien wasn't expected to begin a rehab assignment until after the All-Star break this week, but apparently the Mets had a change of plans. He played five innings at second base before being pulled. The 35-year-old veteran and three-time All-Star could have a chance to make it back before August after being placed on the 10-day injured list on June 25 with a Grade 3 left-hip flexor strain. If Semien doesn't encounter any setbacks with his hip when he moves to Triple-A Syracuse this weekend, he could come off the IL to rejoin the Mets at some point next week. Fantasy managers won't be in a rush to pick Semien up off the waiver wire, though, after he hit just .214/.271/.341 with a .613 OPS, nine home runs, 29 RBI, 30 runs scored, and six stolen bases across his 290 at-bats in the first half. Semien is rostered in only 36% of Yahoo leagues as a fading fantasy asset in his 14th year in the big leagues.

Marcus Semien To Begin Rehab Assignment After All-Star Break

New York Mets second baseman Marcus Semien (hip) will begin a rehab assignment after the All-Star Break. The level at which the assignment will begin has not been announced, but chances are this will be an extensive assignment given the news earlier in the week that the 35-year-old isn't expected to return to the Mets in July. Sidelined with a Grade 3 hip flexor strain on June 25, the veteran had an initial minimum recovery timeline of four to six weeks, which could effectively come to pass by the end of July. That being said, given that the Mets are seemingly out of a playoff spot for the time being, there is likely no rush to bring him back anytime soon. Semien has hit nine home runs and stolen six bases this season, albeit with a disappointing .214 batting average.

Marcus Semien Unlikely to Return in July

The New York Mets haven't issued a timeline on second baseman Marcus Semien (hip), but a return this month "might be difficult," according to Tim Britton and Will Sammon of The Athletic. Semien is on the 10-day injured list with a left-hip flexor strain that has bothered him for much of the 2026 season, but he's optimistic about returning to the lineup and to form in the second half. Before going on the IL in late June, Semien admitted he had intermittent tightness in his hip since at least early May. By late June, "it got to the point where sprinting 100 percent was not possible." The 35-year-old veteran thinks the injury could be related to the broken foot he suffered in 2025 in his last year with the Texas Rangers. It could explain why he has hit just .214 with a .271 on-base percentage and .341 slugging percentage in his first year with New York -- all career worsts. Additionally, he's graded out as below average at the keystone. Semien could bounce back with better health in the second half, but it's clear he's beyond his prime, and he's rostered in just 36% of Yahoo leagues now that he's rehabbing another injury.

Marcus Semien has Grade 3 Flexor Strain, Out 4-6 Weeks

New York Mets second baseman Marcus Semien (elbow) was diagnosed with a Grade 3 hip-flexor strain, and he will be out four to six weeks at a minimum, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Semien tried to play through the injury until it severely limited his movement. Outfielder Tyrone Taylor had a Grade 1.5 to 2 flexor strain and missed 28 days. The 35-year-old Semien had been showing signs of decline offensively in recent years, but playing through injury in 2026 in his first year in New York had really tanked his numbers. In 80 games (318 plate appearances) in his 14th year in the majors, the three-time All-Star hit .214/.271/.341 with a career-worst .613 OPS, nine home runs, 29 RBI, 30 runs scored, six stolen bases, and a 21.4% strikeout rate, which is his worst mark since 2017 with the Athletics. There's no guarantee Semien will bounce back in the second half for the last-place Mets if he can return fully healthy in the second half. For the foreseeable future, Brett Baty will serve as the team's primary option at the keystone in Queens.

Mets Place Marcus Semien on Injured List With Hip-Flexor Strain

The New York Mets announced on Thursday that they placed infielder Marcus Semien (hip) on the 10-day injured list with a left hip-flexor strain and recalled infielder Ronny Mauricio from Triple-A Syracuse in a corresponding move. It's unclear when the 35-year-old veteran injured his hip, but he played in all 18 innings of the team's doubleheader on Wednesday against the visiting Chicago Cubs. In his first year in Queens, Semien has shown his age, slashing just .214/.271/.341 with a career-worst .613 OPS, nine home runs, 29 RBI, 30 runs scored, and six stolen bases in 80 games across 318 plate appearances. If anything, Semien's IL stint will give the three-time All-Star a mental break, and it's very possible we won't see him until the second half of the season. With Jorge Polanco still on the 60-day IL, Mauricio could get some decent run as the team's primary second baseman with Semien sidelined. Given Semien's declining offensive profile in his 14th year in the majors, he's no longer a must-hold in mixed fantasy leagues. He's currently rostered in 42% of Yahoo leagues.

Marcus Semien Getting a Shot in Leadoff Spot for Struggling Mets

New York Mets second baseman Marcus Semien will get a shot in the leadoff spot for the struggling Mets in their contest on Tuesday against the visiting Minnesota Twins and right-hander Simeon Woods Richardson, per MLB.com. Semien's numbers don't jump off the page early on in his first year with the team, but he's been heating up and has reached base eight times in his last four games. Overall, the 35-year-old three-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger winner is batting .234 (18-for-77) with a homer, eight RBI, three runs scored, and a stolen base in 22 games played. The good news for the Mets, who have lost 11 games in a row, is that All-Star outfielder Juan Soto (calf) is expected to rejoin the lineup on Wednesday. Semien has plenty of experience in his career in the leadoff spot, but his offensive profile has shown signs of decline in the last couple of seasons. In six career at-bats versus Woods Richardson, Semien has a solo home run and is batting .167 with an .834 OPS.

Marcus Semien Off to a Slow Start with the Mets, Should Fantasy Managers Be Concerned?

Veteran second baseman Marcus Semien has struggled out of the gates in his first season with the New York Mets, hitting .100/.240/.250 with zero home runs, zero RBI, and two runs scored across his first 25 plate appearances of 2026. New York acquired Semien over the offseason in a high-profile trade with the Texas Rangers, sending out fan-favorite outfielder Brandon Nimmo in return. Semien's production at the plate has slowly been declining in recent years, as he hit .230/.305/.364 with 15 home runs, 62 RBI, 62 runs scored, and 11 stolen bases across 534 plate appearances with Texas in 2025. Swing-and-miss has been a major source of concern for Semien so far in New York, as he currently owns a 32% strikeout rate. The 35-year-old has posted strikeout rates below 18% in each of the last four seasons, so he should post better numbers over a larger sample size. However, if he cannot cut down his whiffs, Semien could be in line for a steep drop-off at the plate in 2026.

Will Marcus Semien's Offensive Decline Continue in New York?

Not much went right for second baseman Marcus Semien in 2025 in what ended up being his final season with the Texas Rangers. The 35-year-old three-time All-Star continued to decline offensively and finished with a .230/.305/.364 slash line, career-worst .669 OPS, 15 home runs, 62 RBI, 62 runs scored, and 11 stolen bases in 127 games. Semien's 127 games played were his fewest in a full season since 2017 with Oakland, and his 15 homers were his fewest in a full season since 2018. The iron man -- Semien has played in a full 162 games three times in the last six full seasons -- might be succumbing to Father Time. A foot injury ended his season prematurely, but he should be ready for the start of 2026 with the Mets. While fantasy managers shouldn't be banking on a late-career resurgence like George Springer in 2025, Semien can still provide moderate power/speed numbers as the Mets' starter at the keystone. Semien is best drafted as middle infield insurance now rather than a starting 2B in 12-team fantasy leagues.

Marcus Semien Shipped to the Mets on Sunday

The Texas Rangers traded second baseman Marcus Semien to the New York Mets in exchange for outfielder Brandon Nimmo on Sunday evening. Semien has spent the past four seasons with the Rangers but is coming off his most disappointing campaign of his 13-year MLB season. In 2025, Semien posted a low .230/.305/.364 line with a .669 OPS, which was even a drop from the modest .699 OPS he held back in 2024. Last summer, the veteran infielder hit just 15 home runs, which was his lowest mark since the 2018 season (excluding the shortened 2020 campaign). While he still placed in the 92nd percentile in Range, he was a below-average hitter according to several metrics, sitting in the 42nd percentile in xwOBA (.318) and the 33rd percentile in xBA (.245). However, Semien should see an everyday role covering the keystone in New York. Despite his disappointing 2025 campaign, he could be primed to bounce back, batting near the top of a lineup that will feature Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor. Josh Smith will likely see most of the opportunities at second base in Texas next summer.
