Matt Gage Earns First Save, Worth Stashing in Closer Committee?

San Francisco Giants relief pitcher Matt Gage was called upon to hold a two-run lead against the Athletics on Saturday. The Giants called on Gage after Erik Miller and Caleb Kilian were already used in the game. Gage tossed a scoreless final frame to earn his first career save on Saturday. Gage has a 1.40 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, but his 11 walks across 19.1 innings are a concern. Gage may end up in the closer committee going forward, which makes him someone worth considering stashing in deep leagues. The Giants don't have a full-time closer, so Gage should likely get more looks.

Matt Gage to Open for Giants on Friday

San Francisco Giants left-handed reliever Matt Gage will serve as the opener against the Washington Nationals on Friday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Right-hander Kai-Wei Teng had been penciled in to start, but he could end up working in a bulk relief role. While Gage probably won't throw more than a couple of innings at most (his season-high pitch count is 41), he'll look to keep an under-the-radar scoreless streak alive versus Washington. The 32-year-old hasn't allowed a run in 15 innings (13 appearances) divided between Detroit and San Francisco this season. Gage has only struck out 11 hitters, but he has helped offset that by inducing grounders at a 52.5% clip and issuing just five walks.

Yankees Claim Matt Gage Off Waivers

The New York Yankees have claimed reliever Matt Gage off waivers from the Houston Astros. Gage had been designated for assignment by Houston after Josh Haders' historic five-year contract became official. The left-handed Gage debuted with 1.38 ERA ball across 13 innings with the Blue Jays in 2022 before appearing in just five games for the Astros in 2023, working to a solid 2.70 ERA in 6 2/3 innings of work. Add it up and Gage owns a 1.83 ERA across 16 MLB appearances, although his 3.74 SIERA in that time is nearly two runs higher than his surface ERA. For what it's worth, he posted a vastly inferior 4.58 ERA and 5.29 FIP across 34 appearances at Triple-A Sugar Land in 2023, as well.

Astros Designate Matt Gage For Assignment

The Houston Astros designated left-hander Matt Gage for assignment on Monday to make room on the 40-man roster for recently signed left-handed reliever Josh Hader, according to a source. Gage made his big-league debut in 2022 with the Toronto Blue Jays and made five relief appearances for the Astros in 2023, allowing two earned runs on six hits (one homer) while walking three and striking out eight over 6 2/3 innings. The 30-year-old southpaw reliever has been pretty good in his small sample size at the major-league level with a 1.83 ERA (3.97 FIP) and 1.07 WHIP with nine walks and 20 strikeouts in 19 2/3 innings. Gage had a 4.58 ERA and 1.63 WHIP with 20 walks and 39 strikeouts in 37 1/3 relief innings last year at Triple-A Sugar Land.

Astros Claim Matt Gage Off Waivers

The Houston Astros claimed left-handed relief pitcher Matt Gage off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday. The Astros announced the move in a tweet from the team's official Twitter account on Monday morning. Gage previously made his Major League debut for the American League East club this past season, throwing 13 innings in 11 appearances. He'll provide the Astros with some additional bullpen depth heading into the 2023 season. As of now, the only other left-handed pitchers on Houston's 40-man roster are starter Framber Valdez and fellow relievers Blake Taylor and Parker Mushinski.
