Randy Rodriguez Undergoes Tommy John Surgery

San Francisco Giants right-handed reliever Randy Rodriguez (elbow) underwent Tommy John surgery on Wednesday. Rodriguez will require 12 to 14 months to recover, meaning he's unlikely to return until 2027. The 27-year-old landed on the injured list with a sprained elbow on Aug. 26, prematurely ending his first All-Star season and depriving the Giants of a breakout reliever. He pitched to a sparkling 1.78 ERA with a .89 WHIP, 67:11 K:BB, and four saves over 50 2/3 innings. Rodriguez took over as the Giants' full-time closer at the beginning of August, but after he went down, the role reverted to Ryan Walker.

Randy Rodriguez to Undergo Tommy John Surgery

San Francisco Giants relief pitcher Randy Rodriguez (elbow) will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery. Rodriguez landed on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday due to a right elbow issue. After further discussion with doctors, Rodriguez has decided to have Tommy John surgery. This operation normally requires 12-to-18 months to recover, so Rodriguez is unlikely to pitch in 2026. This is a tough blow to the Giants as Rodriguez earned his first All-Star selection in 2025. He'll finish with a 1.78 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, and a 67/11 K/BB ratio across 50 appearances this season. The absence of Rodriguez means that Ryan Walker should remain the closer in San Francisco.

Tommy John Surgery Recommended for Randy Rodriguez

According to the San Francisco Giants, multiple doctors recommended that reliever Randy Rodriguez (elbow) undergo Tommy John surgery. Rodriguez will make a final decision this weekend, but Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports thinks it's inevitable. It is brutal news for one of the team's breakout stars in 2025, and Tommy John surgery would keep him out for the entire 2026 season. The Dominican right-hander was placed on the injured list on Tuesday with a right-elbow injury that turned out to be pretty serious. Rodriguz took over primary closing duties in San Fran after the team traded Camilo Doval at the trade deadline, and he finished his second year in the big leagues as a first-time All-Star with a 1.78 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, four saves and a 67:11 K:BB in 50 2/3 frames. With Rodriguez out, Ryan Walker has taken over closing duties for the Gigantes.

Randy Rodriguez Placed on Injured List

San Francisco Giants relief pitcher Randy Rodriguez (elbow) was placed on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday. Rodriguez suffered an elbow sprain during Sunday's contest. The team gave him a few days to rest, but ultimately decided to place him on the injured list. The assumption is that Ryan Walker will take over as the primary closer in the absence of Rodriguez. The Giants are hopeful that Rodriguez will only require the minimum 15 days before returning to the Giants bullpen. He holds an outstanding 1.78 ERA with four saves across 50 appearances this season. Walker could be worth adding in fantasy formats where saves matter.

Randy Rodriguez Battling Arm Soreness

San Francisco Giants closer Randy Rodriguez (arm) was unavailable to pitch on Sunday because of soreness in his right arm, manager Bob Melvin said. The issue began after Rodriguez took the loss against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday. He hasn't pitched since he yielded a walk-off home run to William Contreras in that game. With Rodriguez out of commission Sunday, Ryan Walker closed the door on the Brewers in a 4-3 win for his 11th save of the season. Walker threw a scoreless, one-hit ninth inning with two strikeouts. If Rodriguez has to miss more time, it could lead to an increase in save opportunities for Walker. Rodriguez has slumped in August, having surrendered four earned runs in 5 2/3 innings, taken three losses, and blown a save, but his numbers remain excellent. The flamethrowing 25-year-old has put up a 1.78 ERA with a 0.89 WHIP, 67:11 K:BB, 13 holds, and four saves across 50 2/3 frames.

Randy Rodriguez Earns Fourth Save Of Season Monday

San Francisco Giants closer Randy Rodriguez picked up his fourth save of the season in Monday's 4-3 win over the Padres. Rodriguez came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth inning up by one. He got the first out on a ground-out, allowed a single, and got the final two outs on a pop-out and a fly-out. The 25-year-old has had a bit of a rocky transition to the closer's role after the team traded Camilo Doval at the trade deadline, allowing three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings of work. However, he has converted three of four save opportunities in that time and has a stellar 1.63 ERA, a 0.89 WIHP, and an 11.96 K/9 rate in 49 2/3 IP this season. The Giants are not in as competitive a position as they were earlier in the season, but Rodriguez should have opportunities to provide fantasy value down the stretch.

New Giants Closer Randy Rodriguez Earns Save on Friday

San Francisco Giants closer Randy Rodriguez threw a scoreless 10th inning to collect his second save of the year in a 3-2 win over the New York Mets on Friday. It wasn't an easy outing for Rodriguez, who hit a batter and walked another, but he escaped a bases-loaded jam with a strikeout of Ronny Mauricio to end the game. It was Rodriguez's first appearance since the Giants named him their closer on Friday. He's taking over after the team traded Camilo Doval to the New York Yankees on Thursday. The hard-throwing Rodriguez has put together a brilliant season with a 1.17 ERA, a 0.85 WHIP, and 63:10 K:BB across 46 innings.

Randy Rodriguez Named New Giants Closer

San Francisco Giants relief pitcher Randy Rodriguez has been named the closer going forward. The Giants were in need of another late inning option with Camilo Doval being traded to the New York Yankees on Thursday. Rodriguez makes the most sense for the closer role given how well he has pitched this season. He holds a 1.20 ERA, 0.84 WHIP, and a 62/9 K/BB ratio in 44 games so far. The 25-year-old only has one save under his belt across his two big league seasons. Fantasy managers in need of a closer or bullpen help should scoop up Rodriguez before it's too late.

Randy Rodriguez Throwing Bullpen Sessions

San Francisco Giants rookie right-hander Randy Rodriguez (elbow) had a 3.93 ERA over 33 major-league appearances this year before landing on the 15-day injured list on Aug. 15. Rodriguez was diagnosed with a flexor strain and was shut down for two weeks before resuming a throwing program on Sept. 3. He threw a 30-pitch bullpen session at Oracle Park on Sept. 12 and threw another bullpen on Sunday. As long as the 25-year-old doesn't suffer a setback as he builds himself back up, he has a shot to return to the Giants' big-league bullpen before the end of the 2024 season at the end of September. Rodriguez has appeared in 33 games (one start) in his first year in the big leagues and has gone 3-2 with a 3.93 ERA, a 1.19 WHIP and a 52:16 K:BB in his 50 1/3 innings pitched.

Randy Rodriguez Lands On Injured List

The San Francisco Giants placed right-hander Randy Rodriguez (elbow) on the 15-day injured list on Thursday with right-elbow inflammation and recalled right-hander Spencer Bivens from the minors in a corresponding move. In his first season in the big leagues, Rodriguez has gone 3-2 with a 3.89 ERA (3.28 FIP), a 1.19 WHIP and a 52:16 K:BB in 50 1/3 innings pitched over 33 appearances (one start). It remains to be seen if the 24-year-old Dominican reliever will be able to return to San Francisco's bullpen before the end of August. In the meantime, Bivens will take his spot with the big-league pitching staff. The 30-year-old, who is also a rookie, has been a bit fortunate he's allowed only five earned runs on 19 hits while walking six and fanning 18 in 22 2/3 innings over his 11 outings (one start).
