Oswaldo Cabrera Unlikely to Play Again in 2025

New York Yankees infielder Oswaldo Cabrera (ankle) is considered a long shot to return to the field this season. There is a small window for Cabrera to return, but it remains unlikely at this point. Cabrera has been sidelined since having surgery in mid-May to repair a fractured ankle. The good news is, Cabrera has been walking around without the help of a boot or scooter. However, Cabrera hasn't advanced to any baseball activities yet. The Yankees aren't going to rush anything, so fantasy managers shouldn't count on getting anything from Cabrera for the rest of the season.

"Probably Unlikely" Oswaldo Cabrera Will Return This Year

New York Yankees third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera (ankle) had some ligament damage around his broken left ankle, according to manager Aaron Boone, so his surgery was a little more involved. Boone said that it's "probably unlikely" that Cabrera will play again this season, but there's no specific timetable for his return yet. Fantasy managers that have been holding the 26-year-old in redraft leagues can probably drop him at this point for reinforcements. Cabrera had been serving as New York's primary third baseman and was hitting .243/.322/.308 with a homer, 11 RBI and 17 runs in 107 at-bats before his injury. Oswald Peraza and rookie Jorbit Vivas should continue to split playing time at the hot corner in the Bronx going forward, although veteran DJ LeMahieu could also factor in at the position once Jazz Chisholm Jr. (oblique) returns to second base.

Oswaldo Cabrera Placed On 10-Day Injured List With Fractured Ankle

The New York Yankees announced on Tuesday that they placed infielder/outfielder Oswaldo Cabrera (ankle) on the 10-day injured list with a left-ankle fracture and reinstated infielder DJ LeMahieu (calf) from the 10-day IL in a corresponding move. Cabrera suffered the injury while running the bases in Monday's game against the Seattle Mariners and had to be taken off the field via ambulance, so fantasy managers shouldn't be all that surprised that he sustained a serious injury. There's no timeline for the 26-year-old's return, but he'll be facing an extended absence and likely won't be able to return until the second half of the season. With both Cabrera and Jazz Chisholm Jr. (oblique) now out, both LeMahieu and rookie Jorbit Vivas should see regular playing time moving forward in the Bronx. The switch-hitting Cabrera was hitting .243/.322/.308 with a homer, 11 RBI and 17 runs as New York's primary third baseman.

Oswaldo Cabrera Stretchered Off Field With Ankle Injury Monday

New York Yankees third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera (ankle) left Monday's 11-5 win against the Mariners in the top of the ninth inning with what appeared to be a serious left ankle injury. Cabrera was attempting to tag up from third base on an Aaron Judge fly-out and had his leg give out while trying to score. The training staff instantly came out to assist, and Cabrera was placed on a stretcher before being taken out of the stadium in an ambulance. The 26-year-old went 1-for-4 with a single and a walk in the game. Cabrera's health is more important than his potential fantasy contributions, and more information on his injury should become available in the coming days.

Oswaldo Cabrera Homers Thursday

New York Yankees third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera went 2-for-3 with a homer, a walk, and two runs scored in a 6-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday. Cabrera launched a solo homer off Tampa starter Taj Bradley in the fifth inning to cut the Rays' lead to 3-2. The veteran infielder has been productive in a part-time role in the early portion of the season, hitting .308 with one homer, six runs, and five RBI across 39 at-bats. Despite his solid batting average, Cabrera isn't providing much power while hitting at the bottom of the team's lineup most days.

Ben Rice, Oswaldo Cabrera Sitting On Sunday

New York Yankees first baseman Ben Rice and utility player Oswaldo Cabrera are not in the starting lineup when they conclude a three-game set against the Pittsburgh Pirates. With southpaw Andrew Heaney getting the starting nod for the Pirates, Rice will retreat to the bench. Cabrera was also held out of action on Saturday. As a result, Aaron Judge will shift to the designated hitter spot, and Oswald Peraza will get another start at the hot corner. With Judge shifted to DH, Trent Grisham will be able to stay in the lineup even with Cody Bellinger (back) returning to action. Rice has enjoyed an impressive start to the campaign, posting a .320/.433/.640 slash line with two home runs. Cabrera has held a strong .316 AVG but appears to be losing time to Peraza. Both players will likely return tomorrow afternoon, facing right-hander Casey Mize.

Oswaldo Cabrera Not In Saturday's Lineup

New York Yankees infielder Oswaldo Cabrera is not in the starting lineup on Saturday afternoon when the Yankees continue a series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Instead, the Yankees will give Oswald Peraza the starting nod at the hot corner. Fantasy managers should expect Cabrera to return to the starting lineup on Sunday afternoon. Cabrera has started in six of the first seven games of the regular season. He has seen time at the hot corner and the outfield. Across the opening week, Cabrera has held a .316/.381/.316 slash line with no extra-base hits. He has brought in four runs and scored twice. This afternoon. Peraza will bat in the eight-hole and is worth a look as a budget play in DFS batting in a potent Yankee lineup facing Pittsburgh left-hander Bailey Falter.

Oswaldo Cabrera, Oswald Peraza In Mix At Third Base

New York Yankees infielders Oswaldo Cabrera and Oswald Peraza are in the mix to claim the starting third base job. Manager Aaron Boone also noted that Pablo Reyes is also in the mix. DJ LeMahieu (calf) sustained an injury over the weekend and could be in danger of missing Opening Day, which opens up a starting role for one of these hitters. Cabrera is the likely candidate to win the job as he started 74 of his 109 games at the hot corner last season. Across this stint, Cabrera held a .247/.296/.365 line with eight home runs and a modest 19.3 percent strikeout rate. Peraza has spent most of his professional career as a shortstop but did log 19 starts at third base between the majors and the minor leagues last season. However, across 74 MLB contests, he holds an underwhelming .200/.297/.315 line. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor their development during camp. However, Cabrera will likely win the job given his experience and will carry value in deeper formats batting in a potent Yankee lineup.

Teams Have Checked In On Oswaldo Cabrera

According to Brendan Kuty of The Athletic, several teams have checked in on the availability of Oswaldo Cabrera. Kuty noted that the 25-year-old switch-hitter is on an affordable contract and still has another year before salary arbitration, which makes him an intriguing target. He also has experience playing multiple positions in the infield and outfield, which adds to his flexibility. The Yankees are still in the market for an infielder and could potentially use Cabrera as a trade chip to acquire a more experienced bat. With Gleyber Torres now in Detroit, the Yankees have an open spot in their starting lineup. While internal options like Cabrera, DJ LeMahieu, or Oswald Peraza could eventually earn that role, the Yankees have expressed interest in several free agents and trade targets. Last season, Cabrera posted a .247/.296/.365 line with eight home runs and four stolen bases.

Oswaldo Cabrera Starting At First Base In Game 3

New York Yankees infielder Oswaldo Cabrera will get the start at first base and will hit eighth for the Yankees in Game 3 of the American League Division Series on Wednesday at Kauffman Stadium against the Kansas City Royals and right-hander Seth Lugo. Cabrera has only faced Lugo three times in his career and has a single and a strikeout. The 25-year-old made the start in the Game 1 win over the Royals on Saturday and went 1-for-4 with a double and three strikeouts before retreating to the bench for the Game 2 loss on Monday. Cabrera is a switch-hitter but has fared much better from the left side against right-handers in 2024, batting .268 (59-for-220) with all eight of his home runs from that side. He hit just .190 (15-for-79) with no home runs and 20 strikeouts in 84 plate appearances from the right side. Cabrera is a low-upside DSF sleeper on Wednesday near the bottom of the lineup.
