Owen Murphy Sent Back to Triple-A, a Safe Drop in All Leagues?

The Atlanta Braves announced on Tuesday that they optioned right-handed pitching prospect Owen Murphy to Triple-A Gwinnett after he made his major-league debut in Monday's extra-inning loss to the division-rival New York Mets. The Braves' No. 6 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit in the 10th inning to take the loss while also walking a hitter and striking out one. Atlanta showed plenty of confidence in the 22-year-old in his first big-league appearance in a high-leverage spot, but he didn't rise to the occasion. Murphy's long-term role is clearly as a starter, but if he resurfaces in the majors again at some point in the second half, he might return to a bullpen role. In his first full season since recovering from Tommy John surgery, Murphy has gone 5-7 with a 4.44 ERA and 1.26 WHIP with 92 strikeouts and 38 walks in 16 starts with Double-A Columbus and Gwinnett. The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder is still an intriguing hold in dynasty/keeper leagues, but fantasy managers in single-year formats can continue to ignore Murphy for now. Murphy is rostered in just 1% of Yahoo leagues.

Braves Promote Top Pitching Prospect Owen Murphy, a Top Add in All Leagues?

The Atlanta Braves announced on Monday that they selected the contract of right-handed pitching prospect Owen Murphy from Triple-A Gwinnett and placed left-hander Martin Perez (forearm) on the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move with a left-forearm contusion. Murphy, the team's No. 6 prospect per MLB Pipeline, gets his first major-league call-up after going 5-7 with a 4.44 ERA and 1.26 WHIP with 92 strikeouts and 38 walks in 81 innings in 16 starts this year with Double-A Columbus and Gwinnett. The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder is reportedly set to be a long man out of Atlanta's bullpen to close out the first half of the season, so fantasy managers in redraft leagues can hold off on spending money to pick him up off the waiver wire. In addition, pitching prospect JR Ritchie is back in the big leagues and will continue to feature in a relief role. Murphy's control has been impressive after returning from Tommy John surgery, and he has all the ingredients to be a long-term starting asset for the Braves, but that might not happen full-time until 2027.

Owen Murphy Firmly on the Stash Radar Following Seven-Strikeout Effort

Atlanta Braves right-handed pitching prospect Owen Murphy is coming off another strong showing at Triple-A Gwinnett and is putting himself in position to earn a call-up to the majors in the second half of the season. On July 1, Murphy tossed six shutout innings (with just two hits) and struck out seven. Overall, since joining Triple-A this season, Murphy has logged 60 1/3 innings (11 starts) to the tune of a 3.88 ERA and a1.08 WHIP. During this stint, the right-hander has struck out 65 hitters and walked just 20 hitters. He opened the campaign with Double-A but needed just 20 2/3 innings to prove he was ready to join the top level. With the Braves dealing with many injuries to their pitching staff, including Spencer Strider and Spencer Schwellenbach, Murphy could provide them with a much-needed spark in the back of the rotation down the stretch. He is quickly emerging as a top prospect to stash among pitchers.

Is Owen Murphy the Next Braves Pitching Prospect to Debut?

Atlanta Braves pitching prospect Owen Murphy began the regular season at the Double-A level but has recently been moved to Triple-A and is emerging as a potential stash candidate. With Double-A, Murphy did not enjoy the best success, posting a hefty 6.10 ERA with a 27:18 K:BB across 20 2/3 innings of work. However, the Braves believed he was ready to join Gwinnett, and he has done more than hold his own. After going through some gradual growing pains to begin his Triple-A career, Murphy has looked quite comfortable in each of his last two games. During this two-game stretch, Murphy has logged six innings in each start and struck out 16 hitters while allowing just three earned runs. With Atlanta lacking much depth on their MLB roster, Murphy may be the next man called in the coming weeks. He will need to show this success over a longer period, but the No. 5-ranked prospect in the system is now firmly on the stash radar among top pitching prospects.

Owen Murphy To Have Tommy John Surgery

MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo has confirmed that Atlanta Braves pitching prospect Owen Murphy (elbow) will have season-ending Tommy John surgery later this week. Murphy is the team's No. 5 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, and will finish the 2024 season with a 4-2 record, sharp 1.54 ERA, 0.73 WHIP, 12 walks and 60 strikeouts in 41 innings over seven starts with High-A Rome. The 20-year-old was the 20th overall pick by the Braves in 2022 out of a high school in Illinois. It's a tough break for the young right-hander, and he'll now most likely have to miss around half of the 2025 season in addition to the rest of this year. It will set his development back in the minors, with a potential debut in the big leagues probably not coming for at least another couple of years.

Owen Murphy Strikes Out 11 In Latest Outing

Atlanta Braves pitching prospect Owen Murphy was the club's first-round pick in 2022 and has flashed significant upside ever since making his pro debut. The right-hander has good spin behind his offerings, making up for a lack of velocity likely caused by his relatively undersized 6-foot-1 frame. His fastball registers in the low 90s. He also throws a slider with good break and a slow, loopy curveball that misses enough bats. Finally, he's working on improving his changeup. Murphy was quite effective in his outing last week, striking out a whopping 11 batters over just 6.1 innings of work. Furthermore, he allowed zero runs on just three hits. A promotion to Double-A sounds like it's right around the corner.

Owen Murphy Nearing Double-A Promotion

Atlanta Braves starting pitching prospect Owen Murphy has been one of the best pitchers in all of the minor leagues this season, and he posted another dominant outing on Wednesday. Murphy tossed five innings of two-run ball with three hits, two walks, and struck out eight. This start brings the 20-year-old to a 1.82 ERA and 0.78 WHIP with 49 punchouts across 34 innings. Murphy has yet to allow more than two earned runs in his six starts this season and is making a case for a promotion to Double-A. Even though Murphy is still a couple of years away from his major league debut, dynasty managers should pay close attention to him as he is developing into an elite strikeout pitcher and could be promoted to Double-A fairly soon.

Owen Murphy Strikes Out 10 In Latest Gem

Atlanta Braves pitching prospect Owen Murphy was the club's first-round pick in 2022 and has flashed significant upside ever since making his pro debut. The right-hander gets good spin behind his offerings, making up for a lack of velocity likely caused by his relatively undersized 6-foot-1 frame. His fastball registers in the low 90s. He also throws a slider with good break and a slow, loopy curveball that misses enough bats. Finally, he's working on improving his changeup. Murphy was quite effective in his outing last week, striking out 10 batters and allowing just one hit over seven scoreless innings. He has looked brilliant at the High-A level this year, never allowing more than two runs in a single outing. If he continues to pitch well, he could earn a promotion to Double-A by the end of May.

Owen Murphy Tosses Seven-Inning Gem In Thursday’s Victory

Atlanta Braves starting pitching prospect Owen Murphy threw seven shutout innings with 10 strikeouts en route to his third victory of the season. Murphy brought a no-hitter into the seventh inning but surrendered a leadoff triple to second baseman Loidel Chapelli. The 20-year-old is now riding a stellar 1.13 ERA and 0.63 WHIP in 24 innings at High-A. This season has been a major turnaround for Murphy, as he posted a 4.76 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in 17 innings at High-A last year. The fifth-ranked prospect in the Atlanta system, according to MLB Pipeline, is not projected to reach the major leagues until 2026 but should continue to raise his dynasty stock as he moves through the minor leagues.

Owen Murphy Strikes Out 12 In Most Recent Outing

Atlanta Braves pitching prospect Owen Murphy struck out 12 batters, surrendering one run over 5 2/3 innings pitched during his most recent appearance for Low-A Augusta. The 2022 first-round draft pick has struggled early on in his professional career, posting a 4.65 ERA through 11 starts this season, though his 29.4% strikeout rate is certainly a silver lining. At only 19 years old, Murphy is the second-ranked pitching prospect in the Braves organization. He's at least a couple of years of development away from ascending to the majors, though he projects as a mid-rotation starter down the road. There is nothing actionable for fantasy managers now, but Murphy will be a player to watch.
