Shawn Dubin Lands on Injured List, Pedro Leon Transferred to 60-Day IL

The Houston Chronicle's Matt Kawahara reports that the Houston Astros have placed reliever Shawn Dubin (forearm) on the 15-day injured list with a forearm strain. The team called up Triple-A reliever Jordan Weems in a corresponding move, and shifted Pedro Leon (knee) to the 60-day IL to make room on the 40-man roster. Dubin last pitched a third of an inning five days ago, so it's possible the injury occurred then, though it wasn't a retroactive designation. As of now, he'll first be eligible to return on Jul. 6. However, it wouldn't be surprising to see him miss more than the minimum stay. Weems has a combined 4.66 ERA and 1.66 WHIP through 29 innings pitched in the minors thus far in 2025.

Pedro Leon Going Through Running, Hitting and Throwing Progression

Houston Astros outfield prospect Pedro Leon (knee) was returned from his rehab assignment last Tuesday due to more soreness in his left knee, but he's now going through a running, hitting and throwing progression, according to The Athletic's Chandler Rome. Leon has been rehabbing this year from a Grade 1 MCL sprain and recently had a setback while playing for Triple-A Sugar Land. The team's No. 18 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, is working his way back but is probably several weeks away from returning to game action down on the farm. The 27-year-old Cuban hit .299/.372/.514 with an .886 OPS, 24 home runs, 90 RBI, 78 runs scored and 29 stolen bases in 118 games last year with Sugar Land and also made his big-league debut, playing in just seven games. Leon has exceptional raw power and strength, but it comes with lots of strikeouts and poor plate discipline.

Pedro Leon Targeting Late-April Return

Houston Astros outfield prospect Pedro Leon (knee) is continuing to progress well from his knee injury and is targeting a return to Triple-A in late-April. Leon suffered this injury during spring training and has missed the opening weeks of the regular season. He was able to appear in just one spring training game after suffering a Grade 1 MCL sprain. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his progression as he could begin a rehab assignment in the coming weeks. Last summer, the No. 22-ranked prospect in the Houston system made his MLB debut and tallied two hits across seven games. He spent most of the summer with Triple-A Sugar Land and held a .229/.372/.514 slash line with 25 doubles and 24 home runs. Fantasy managers should expect Leon to open the 2025 campaign with Sugar Land before pushing for a return to the majors.

Pedro Leon Resumes Baseball Activities

Houston Astros outfielder Pedro Leon (knee) played catch and hit in the batting cages in camp on Wednesday. Leon is finally resuming baseball activities at spring training after he was diagnosed with a Grade 1 left MCL strain early in camp. Because of all the time he's missed in spring training, the 26-year-old will not be ready for Opening Day and will most likely start the 2025 season at Triple-A Sugar Land. The Cuban outfielder made his major-league debut with the Astros in 2024 but only appeared in seven games, going 2-for-20 (.100) with two stolen bases, 10 strikeouts and two runs scored in 21 plate appearances. Per MLB Pipeline, he's Houston's No. 22 prospect. The 5-foot-9, 170-pounder can really swing the bat and has some raw pop despite his size, but he could really stand to improve his plate discipline if he wants to have an everyday role once he's in the big leagues for good.

Shawn Dubin, Pedro Leon Dealing With Injuries

Houston Astros right-hander Shawn Dubin (shoulder) and outfielder Pedro Leon (knee) are both dealing with injuries in camp, according to MLB.com's Brian McTaggart. Dubin has right-shoulder inflammation and has been shut down in spring training, while Leon has a Grade 1 MCL strain in his knee and will be out for a while. Dubin probably has a better shot at being ready for Opening Day in late March, but it's possible both players will have to open the 2025 regular season on the injured list. The 29-year-old Dubin posted a 4.17 ERA while striking out 49 and walking 26 in 45 1/3 innings for the Astros a season ago. Leon, a 26-year-old from Cuba, made his big-league debut in 2024 and went 2-for-20 (.100) with two steals and 10 strikeouts in seven games. When he recovers from his knee injury, he'll likely join Triple-A Sugar Land.

Pedro Leon Dealing With Left Knee Discomfort

Houston Astros outfield prospect Pedro Leon (knee) is dealing with left knee discomfort. Lee was expected to start in Sunday's Grapefruit League contest but was instead a late scratch. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor the outfielder's status as he may miss an extended period of camp. Last season, Leon made his MLB debut and tallied just two his across seven games. He has spent the majority of his previous three seasons with Triple-A Sugar Land. He has seen steady improvement at Triple-A as he posted a career-best .299/.372/.514 line with 25 doubles and 24 home runs, which were all career-highs last summer. He also swiped an impressive 29 bags. Leon should compete for a depth role in the outfield on the major league roster when healthy. However, if he happens to miss most of spring training, he may have to open the campaign with Triple-A.

Trey Cabbage Recalled, Pedro Leon Sent Down

The Houston Astros recalled outfielder Trey Cabbage from Triple-A Sugar Land on Monday and optioned outfield prospect Pedro Leon to Sugar Land in a corresponding move. Cabbage has immediately been put in the team's starting lineup on Monday at Minute Maid Park against the Boston Red Sox and right-hander Tanner Houck, as he's playing right field and batting seventh. The 27-year-old left-handed-hitting outfielder will return to a part-time role in Houston against right-handed pitchers, but he doesn't really move the needle for fantasy managers in mixed leagues. Cabbage is hitting .217 (18-for-83) with a homer and eight RBI in 43 games at the big-league level in his second year in the majors in 2024. Leon, the club's No. 21 prospect per MLB Pipeline, will head back to the farm after going 2-for-20 (.100) with two steals and 10 strikeouts in his first seven games in the bigs.

Pedro Leon Debuts For The Houston Astros

Rookie Pedro Leon is starting for the Houston Astros in right field Saturday afternoon and batting ninth, making his major league debut. In 93 games with Triple-A Sugar Land, Leon hit .297 with 19 home runs, 74 RBI, and 23 stolen bases in 424 plate appearances. He replaces Joey Loperfido on the active roster, who was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays earlier in the week in exchange for left-hander Yusei Kikuchi.

Pedro Leon Set To Make Major-League Debut

Houston Astros outfield prospect Pedro Leon is set to make his major league debut, according to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com. Leon is set to fill the roster spot originally occupied by Joey Loperfido, who was dealt to the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday evening. Leon has spent the past three seasons at the Triple-A level but has taken a significant step forward in his development this summer. Through 93 games at Triple-A Sugar Land, the 26-year-old sits with a strong .297/.377/.519 line, 19 home runs, 74 RBI, and 23 stolen bases. He was on pace to smash his previous career-highs. Leon could be a name to add in deeper AL-only formats this week, as he could carve out a role in the starting nine. With Kyle Tucker (shin) still sidelined, Leon could have a chance to claim everyday right field duties as Chas McCormick has disappointed this season with a .208/.272/.318 line.

Astros To Promote Pedro Leon

The Houston Astros are calling up outfield prospect Pedro Leon. Leon, 26, will make his big-league debut when he enters his first game. The Cuban signed with the Astros in the 2020-2021 offseason and has spent the last three seasons in Triple-A Sugar Land, where he has hit a minimum of 17 home runs each year. In 2024, Leon has hit .297 with 19 homers, 74 RBI and 23 stolen bases across 93 games. Not only can Leon hit the ball hard, but he is a very good defender and that could open up some opportunities for him at the next level. With outfielder Joey Loperfido on his way to the Toronto Blue Jays, Leon is likely to operate as a fourth outfielder, but if he can prove he can hit at the next level, he could be an intriguing add down the stretch for fantasy managers. As he waits for his chance, it wouldn't hurt for managers to add him to their watch list.
