Phil Maton, Cubs Agree on Two-Year Deal

Free-agent right-hander Phil Maton and the Chicago Cubs agreed to an undisclosed two-year deal with a club option for a third year on Friday, a league source told Will Sammon of The Athletic. Daniel Palencia emerged as Chicago's primary closer by the end of the 2025 season, but Maton will no doubt be in the late-inning mix for the Cubs in 2026. The 32-year-old veteran spent the ninth year of his big-league career in 2025 with the St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers, combining for a 2.79 ERA (2.60 FIP), 1.06 WHIP, a career-high five saves, 81 strikeouts, and 23 walks in 61 1/3 innings out of the bullpen in 22 relief appearances. Maton had a strikeout rate over 30% (32.7) for the second time in his career this past season and walked 9.3% of the batters he faced.

Phil Maton Takes Second Straight Loss on Friday

Texas Rangers reliever Phil Maton suffered a blown save and took the loss for the second straight game on Friday. With the Rangers leading the Toronto Blue Jays 5-3 in the eighth, they called on Maton to escape a jam with runners on first and third and no outs. Instead, Maton allowed the inherited runners to score and gave up an earned run of his own on a hit and two walks. He fell to 2-5 on the season and has yielded five earned runs on three hits with 5:3 K:BB in his past two appearances. Maton has still pitched well this year between St. Louis and Texas, having put up a 3.15 ERA with 57:19 K:BB in 45 2/3 innings, but he hasn't been able to seize the Rangers' wide-open closer's role since they acquired him on July 31.

Phil Maton Implodes in Loss

Texas Rangers reliever Phil Maton (2-4) blew a save and took his fourth loss of the season in a 6-4 heartbreaker against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday. Maton entered in the eighth with a 3-2 lead and two outs, and he struck out Tyler Locklear to end the inning. The Rangers kept Maton in for the ninth, which looked like a smart decision when the right-hander fanned the first two hitters he faced. The wheels came off after that, however, as Maton allowed a home run to James McCann, put two men on with a walk and a hit by pitch, and then surrendered a three-run blast to Ketel Marte. Maton ultimately achieved his goal of getting four outs, but not before surrendering four earned runs in a crushing loss. It was by far his worst outing since he joined the Rangers in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals on July 31. Before Wednesday's implosion, Maton had given up just one run on two hits in his first five innings with the Rangers. With Texas lacking a go-to closer, Maton should continue to receive save chances, but he didn't do himself any favors on Wednesday.

Phil Maton Earns Save On Tuesday

Texas Rangers relief pitcher Phil Maton picked up his third save of the season and his first with his new team in Tuesday's 2-0 win over the Yankees. Maton came in to pitch the top of the ninth inning up by two. He allowed a leadoff single but induced a ground-ball double play and ended the game with a strikeout. Robert Garcia (back) has seen the majority of save opportunities for the Rangers lately, but he exited last Saturday's game with back spasms and has not pitched since. Maton is one of several relievers who could see save opportunities in the interim, and no one player has held down the role of closer for long with the Rangers this season. He has pitched well, earning 21 holds with a 2.18 ERA, a 1.09 WHIP, and an 11.10 K/9 rate in 41 1/3 innings of work.

Phil Maton Traded to Rangers

The Texas Rangers acquired reliever Phil Maton from the St. Louis Cardinals before Thursday's trade deadline. The Cardinals received two pitching prospects - lefty Mason Molina and righty Skylar Hales - as well as international signing bonus pool space in return. The Rangers bolstered their bullpen on Thursday in landing both Maton and southpaw Danny Coulombe, whom they scooped up in a trade with the Minnesota Twins. Maton was quietly excellent this year as a member of the Cardinals, with whom he recorded a 2.35 ERA, a 1.12 WHIP, 48:15 K:BB, 20 holds, and two saves in 38 1/3 innings. Maton should at least give the Rangers a reliable setup man, but he may be a leading candidate for saves if Robert Garcia falters in the closer's role or suffers an injury. The Cardinals' late-game situation looks a lot murkier with Maton, former closer Ryan Helsley (New York Mets), and Steven Matz (Boston Red Sox) out the door in separate trades. Gordon Graceffo, JoJo Romero, and Riley O'Brien could be among Cardinals relievers in the mix for saves. It's a situation worth monitoring for fantasy managers.

Boston Checking In On Phil Maton

According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com, the Boston Red Sox have checked in on free-agent relief pitcher Phil Maton. Cotillo notes that Boston has expressed interest in several of the top remaining relief pitchers on the market. Maton opened the 2024 season in Tampa Bay but was eventually shipped to the Mets for their playoff push. Over 64 total frames, the right-hander held a 3.66 ERA and 1.11 WHIP. He generated an impressive 33.1% hard-hit rate and a 47.1% ground-ball rate, which were both significantly above the average marks. He was typically deployed as a set-up man with both clubs, as he tallied 18 holds. If Boston were to sign him to a contract, fantasy managers should expect him to have a similar role operating as the eighth-inning option in front of closer Aroldis Chapman.

Mets Decline Phil Maton's Option

The New York Mets declined relief pitcher Phil Maton's $7.75 million option for the 2025 season on Monday and instead paid him a $250,000 buyout. Maton is now on the free-agent market and will be looking for a new team to pitch for next season. It wouldn't be a surprise for the Mets to try to re-sign him, though, after how effective he was out of their bullpen in 2024 after they acquired him in a trade from the Tampa Bay Rays. The 31-year-old right-hander had a 2.51 ERA, 0.84 WHIP, a save, 30 strikeouts and six walks in 28 2/3 regular-season innings for the Mets in the second half of the season. In 40 outings in relief for the Rays before the trade, Maton wasn't quite as good, recording a 4.58 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, two saves, 30 strikeouts and 18 walks in 35 1/3 innings pitched. Perhaps he'll land somewhere where he'll have a better shot at save chances in 2025.

Mets Acquire Phil Maton From Rays

The New York Mets acquired right-hander Phil Maton on Tuesday from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. In a corresponding move, the Mets designated left-hander Joey Lucchesi for assignment. Maton is expected to provide middle-relief depth for the Mets with the move to the National League. The 31-year-old reliever hasn't been fantasy relevant in 2024 with a 1-2 record, 4.58 ERA (5.63 FIP), a 1.33 WHIP, a career-high two saves, 30 strikeouts and 18 walks in 35 1/3 innings out of Tampa's bullpen in 40 appearances. It's a pretty big step back for in his eighth MLB season after he had a 3.00 ERA and 1.12 WHIP with a save and 74:25 K:BB in 66 relief innings last year with the Houston Astros.

Details Of Phil Maton's Deal Revealed

While the Tampa Bay Rays' signing of free-agent relief pitcher Phil Maton is pending a physical exam and may not be finalized until next week, the framework of the deal is now in place, per Tampa Bay Times' Marc Topkin. The 30-year-old is set to make $6.25 million in 2024, with a 2025 option for $7.75 million or a $250,000 buyout. Maton had the best season of his career in 2023 with the Houston Astros, going 4-3 with a 3.00 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and 27.0% strikeout rate to go with 10 holds in 66 innings pitched. Maton will likely not be in line for save opportunities with the Rays, but he should see hold opportunities, making him a fantasy option in deeper saves-plus-holds leagues.

Phil Maton Finalizing Deal With Rays

Free-agent right-hander Phil Maton is finalizing an undisclosed deal with the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday, according to a source. Maton had the best season of his career in 2023 with the Houston Astros, going 4-3 with a 3.00 ERA (3.74 FIP), a 1.12 WHIP, his second career save, 25 walks and 74 strikeouts in 66 relief innings. In the last two seasons with the Astros, he has a combined 3.42 ERA (4.03 FIP) and 1.18 WHIP with 49 walks and 147 punchouts in 131 2/3 relief frames. Pete Fairbanks and Jason Adam should see most of Tampa's high-leverage closing situations at the back end of the bullpen in 2024, but the 30-year-old Maton should be a valuable late-inning setup piece in front of them this year. An impressive 26.5 percent strikeout rate for his career should make him valuable in deep holds leagues in 2024.
