Tony Kemp News
Jon Heyman of the MLB Network is reporting that infielder Tony Kemp has agreed to a minor-league deal with the Minnesota Twins. The veteran spent Opening Day with the Baltimore Orioles, but was recently let go in favor of top prospect Jackson Holliday. In his brief time with the Orioles, Kemp was hitless in nine at-bats. The veteran should provide solid depth for a Twins team that has lost infielders Royce Lewis (quadriceps) and Carlos Correa (side) to injuries early on in the season, but can be avoided in fantasy leagues.
The Baltimore Orioles designated infielder/outfielder Tony Kemp for assignment on Wednesday to make room on the active roster for top prospect Jackson Holliday. Kemp got the start at second base for the Orioles in their win over the Red Sox on Tuesday, but now he's off the 40-man roster and could be with another organization before long. The 32-year-old was cut by the Cincinnati Reds at the end of spring training and only appeared in five games for Baltimore in the early going, failing to record a single hit in 10 plate appearances. If he's not claimed off waivers or traded, Kemp could wind up sticking around in the O's organization if he accepts an assignment to the minors leagues.
The Baltimore Orioles signed infielder/outfielder Tony Kemp to an undisclosed major-league contract on Tuesday and designated third baseman Nick Maton for assignment in a corresponding move. Kemp was in spring training with the Cincinnati Reds but opted out of his minor-league deal and is now headed back to the American League after slashing just .209/.303/.304 with five home runs, 27 RBI and a career-high 15 stolen bases in 124 games with the Oakland Athletics in 2023. In addition to being able to play the outfield, the 32-year-old left-handed-hitting veteran can also fill in at second base for the Orioles. At best, Kemp is going to fill a reserve role for the O's in 2024 and isn't much of a fantasy asset. The former fifth-round pick of the Houston Astros in 2013 out of Vanderbilt is a career .238/.325/.352 hitter with only 35 homers in eight big-league seasons.
