Dane Dunning News
Texas Rangers starting pitcher Dane Dunning had his best start of the season on Sunday, picking up the win in a 4-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Dunning was on a mission in this one, racking up 10 strikeouts over 5 innings of two-run ball (one earned). The righty allowed just three hits, and maybe most importantly didn't walk a single batter. Considering he had walked at least two in every other start this season, this was clearly a big part of his success. Dunning remains a deeper-league option with some streamer appeal in standard-sized leagues, but he has shown an improved ability to get strikeouts this year, which is something to watch for in his coming starts.
Texas Rangers right-hander Dane Dunning will take the hill for the team's Cactus League opener on Friday against the Kansas City Royals, with Cody Bradford scheduled to follow him in relief. Dunning threw a career-high 172 2/3 innings in the regular season in 2023 over 35 appearances (26 starts) and went 12-7 with a career-best 3.70 ERA (4.27 FIP) and 1.26 WHIP with 55 walks and a career-high 140 strikeouts at the back end of the team's starting rotation. The 29-year-old relies on inducing weak contact and isn't going to overpower hitters, and he'll likely be moved to a long-relief role in the second half in 2024 if both Jacob deGrom (elbow) and Max Scherzer (back) are able to return from their injuries. Dunning is outside RotoBaller's rankings of the top-100 fantasy pitchers.
Right-hander Dane Dunning avoided salary arbitration with the Texas Rangers on Thursday by agreeing to a one-year, $3.325 million deal for the 2024 season, according to a source. Dunning gets a nice raise in his first year of arbitration eligibility. The 29-year-old had the best season of his career in 2023 in his third year with the Rangers, going 12-7 with a career-best 3.70 ERA (4.27 FIP) and 1.26 WHIP while walking 55 and striking out a career-high 140 batters in 172 2/3 innings over his 35 appearances (26 starts). He will open 2024 with a spot in Texas' starting rotation yet again after initially entering it early last year when Jacob deGrom got hurt. Dunning's fantasy ceiling will remain low this year because he relies more on inducing soft contact than creating swings and misses.

After missing the entire 2019 season due to Tommy John surgery, Dane Dunning showcased some real talent over seven starts at the Major League level in 2020.The right-hander posted a 3.97 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and 35:13 K:BB through 34 innings. Overall, it was an impressive debut, but one not without its struggles. Dunning's last two starts of the year were terrible and he was really a boom or bust starter during the year. In four of his seven starts, he gave up 14 runs in 16 innings, which amounts to a 7.88 ERA. Additionally, his 9.26 K/9, 11.4% SwStr%, and 15.5% K-BB% are all below his minor league levels, which may indicate that he will have trouble putting major leaguers away. That could be attributed to his pitch mix since Dunning is primarily a sinkerball, throwing his sinker 39.4% of the time. Considering it only had a 15.3% Whiff% and a 19.2% PutAway%, it's clearly not a strikeout pitch. It also produced a .285 xBA as opposed to the .173 batting average against, which indicates he also got lucky with the pitch. The good news is that Dunning has four quality offerings with his fastball, slider, and changeup all garnering a 30% whiff rate or higher. His fastball also had an xBA of .230 as opposed to the .364 batting average against it recorded, so there is room for improvement there. Dunning should also see an improvement in his home park now that he will be pitching for the Rangers under Globe Life's retractable roof. The stadium played middle of the road for runs but was dead last in park factor rankings for HRs in the short season. As a groundball pitcher in that park, Dunning should benefit, but I expect him to settle in as a low-to-mid 4.00 ERA pitcher with a K/9 just under 9.00, provided he utilizes his other pitches more than he did in 2020. That's a profile that I'd take in the late 200s which is where is ADP currently sits.
