Ryan Clifford Making Strides as a Defender

New York Mets first base/outfield prospect Ryan Clifford has continued to improve as a defender in the outfield. Clifford has spent most of his time in the minor leagues as a first baseman but has been shifted to the outfield to provide more versatility ahead of his eventual MLB debut. Last summer, Clifford spent most of his time with Double-A before earning a look at Triple-A in the second half. Across 139 total games, the 22-year-old logged 70 of the starts at first base and 53 coming in the outfield. He held a cumulative .237/.356/.470 line with a .526 OPS, 23 doubles, and 29 round-trippers. While Clifford is nearing his MLB debut, managers should expect him to begin the season at Triple-A to further improve his skills in the outfield. However, given New York's current lack of outfield depth, especially in right field, Clifford could be in contention to join the MLB roster much sooner than expected.

Ryan Clifford to Compete for Early MLB Debut?

New York Mets first base/outfield prospect Ryan Clifford is unlikely to break camp with the MLB roster, but should be in the mix to reach Queens early in the campaign. Per MLB.com, Clifford is the team's No. 6 prospect and is considered the sport's No. 5 overall first base prospect. Clifford was drafted in the 11th round of the 2022 MLB Draft by the Houston Astros. Last summer, Clifford spent the majority of his campaign (105 games) at Double-A. During this stint, Clifford held a .243/.355/.494 line with a strong .848 OPS. He hit 24 home runs while swiping four bases. He was then bumped up to Triple-A, where he logged 34 games with a much lower .219/.359/.393 line with a .754 OPS. Clifford will likely need to find his footing at Triple-A during the opening months before making a strong push to join the major leagues.

Ryan Clifford Promoted to Triple-A

The New York Mets have promoted first base prospect Ryan Clifford to Triple-A Syracuse, according to MiLB Central. Clifford was considered their No. 7-ranked prospect in their system prior to the promotion. The corner infielder has spent the entire season at Double-A. Through 105 games with Binghamton, Clifford posted a .243/.355/494 line with an .848 OPS. He tallied 18 doubles and launched an impressive 24 long balls while holding a 113:63 K:BB. During his first extended look at Double-A in 2024, Clifford held a lower .231/.359/.456 slash line with a .815 OPS. Fantasy managers should monitor his status at Triple-A, but it does not appear Clifford will be in the mix to join the MLB roster for the stretch run, as Pete Alonso is no danger to lose at-bats in the major leagues.

Mets Prospect Ryan Clifford Named Eastern League Player of the Week

New York Mets prospect Ryan Clifford was named Eastern League Player of the Week after a dominant stretch at Double-A. The 21-year-old slugger batted .522 with four home runs and eight walks, showcasing his advanced power and plate discipline. On the season, Clifford is slashing .245/.367/.497 with 21 home runs, a 26.6% strikeout rate, and an impressive 15.5% walk rate. A former 11th-round pick in the 2022 draft, Clifford has rapidly climbed the Mets' farm system. With continued production, the first baseman/outfielder could be on the fast track to Triple-A later this summer.

Ryan Clifford Goes Deep Twice on Wednesday

New York Mets first base prospect Ryan Clifford went 3-for-4 with two long balls, three RBI, and a walk during their contest against Double-A Reading on Wednesday evening. Clifford was able to snap a nine-game power skid in a big way with his second two-homer game of the campaign. During this nine-game slump, the former 11th-round pick posted a low .086/.200/.114 slash line with a double. Through 89 total games with Double-A this season, Clifford has posted a .235/.351/.476 line with an .827 OPS and 19 round-trippers. Last summer, Clifford made his Double-A debut and held a similar .231/.359/.456 line but just 18 long balls across a larger 98-game stint. If Clifford can continue to progress, he may be in the mix to earn a taste of Triple-A later this season.

Ryan Clifford Homers Twice, Drives in Seven Runs

New York Mets first base/outfield prospect Ryan Clifford clubbed a pair of home runs in a 2-for-6 day at the plate for Double-A Binghamton. The first was a three-run blast in the opening frame of the contest, and the other was a grand slam in the eighth inning. The 21-year-old has four home runs in his last five games and 17 on the year, now the owner of a .246/.363/.496 slash line with a .387 wOBA and 152 wRC+ through 79 games. The former 11th-round draft pick has an elevated 26.6 percent strikeout rate, but it is somewhat offset by a strong 15.3 percent walk rate, and so long as he continues to hit for power, there's a chance he could see some time at Triple-A later this year.

Ryan Clifford Goes Deep In Second Straight Game

New York Mets first base prospect Ryan Clifford has gone deep in back-to-back games at Double-A Binghamton. Over these two games, Clifford has gone 5-for-10 at the dish with three runs and five RBI. However, prior to this recent power surge, Clifford held a modest 0.80/.179/.080 slash line over his last eight contests. During this stretch, Clifford tallied just two hits (both singles). Through the first 27 games of the Double-A regular season, Clifford has held a .228/.330/.435 slash line with four doubles and five round-trippers. Last season, Clifford held a similar .231/.359/.456 slash line across 98 games with Double-A Binghamton. If Clifford can continue to find his power swing, he should be in the mix to join Triple-A in the coming weeks.

Ryan Clifford Goes Deep On Wednesday

New York Mets first base prospect Ryan Clifford went 2-for-3 with a home run during their contest on Wednesday evening against Double-A New Hampshire. This outing extended his current hitting streak to four games. During this four-game surge, Clifford has tallied at least two hits in all but one contest. Before this recent surge, the No. 4-ranked prospect in the system held an underwhelming .154/.333/.231 slash line with just two extra-base hits. Clifford spent most of the 2024 campaign with Double-A Binghamton, and fantasy managers should expect Clifford to be in contention to earn a promotion to Triple-A in the coming weeks if he continues this steady production. If he is able to earn an early call to Triple-A this summer, he could push for a second-half MLB debut.

Ryan Clifford Belts Home Run For First Spring Hit

New York Mets outfield/first base prospect Ryan Clifford collected his first hit of the spring season on Thursday, which was a two-run shot in the sixth inning of the team's 5-0 Grapefruit League win over the Astros. The 21-year-old is now 1-for-6 during the spring, although it's not likely that he'll be with the big league club come Opening Day, regardless of his performance in the Grapefruit League. The former 11th-round pick spent time at High-A and Double-A last season, amassing a .228-19-68-66-4 line over 129 games, although much of that production came at Double-A. While his batting average is nothing special, he's clearly got some power, but also has a knack for getting on base, boasting an elite career walk rate in the minors of 15.7 percent and a .378 OBP. If he can impress at Triple-A this year, there's a chance we see him in New York by season's end, but a 2026 call-up may be more likely, and he'll be more valuable in leagues that reward OBP while providing a decent source of home runs and RBI production whenever he does get the call.

Ryan Clifford Homers Twice, Drives In Six

New York Mets outfield/first base prospect Ryan Clifford went 3-for-5 on Wednesday for Double-A Binghamton with two home runs, a double, six RBI, and two runs scored. The 20-year-old's eight-game hit streak came to an end on Tuesday but he started a new one in style on Wednesday and has now hit safely in nine of his last ten games, going 16-for-41 (.390) during that span including four doubles and four home runs. The former 11th-round pick now has 13 long balls in 77 games, showcasing his prodigious power, especially given his age. Even though this current hot stretch only puts his Double-A batting average at .230, his OBP is strong at .377 and he could see some time at Triple-A before the season is out.
