Sean Manaea Doesn't Make Opening Day Starting Rotation

New York Mets veteran left-hander Sean Manaea has not been included on the team's Opening Day starting rotation, according to Anthony DiComo. The Mets will roll with Freddy Peralta, David Peterson, Nolan McLean, Clay Holmes, and Kodai Senga as their starting five to kick things off in 2026. Manaea will piggyback off one of the starters the first time through the rotation. The 34-year-old southpaw has displayed diminished velocity this spring, although Manaea has downplayed it. In his three Grapefruit League starts, Manaea has allowed four earned runs on seven hits (two homers) while walking two and striking out nine in 9 2/3 innings of work. He had a late-career resurgence in 2024 in his first year in New York with a 3.47 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and 184:63 K:BB in 32 starts, but injuries and inconsistency returned last year, when he went 2-4 with a career-worst 5.64 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 75:12 K:BB in only 60 2/3 frames. Without a rotation spot to begin the year, Manaea becomes more of a high-risk, low-reward late-round flier for rotation depth in fantasy drafts.

Sean Manaea's Velocity is Still Down

New York Mets left-hander Sean Manaea's velocity remained low in his Grapefruit League outing on Tuesday against the Miami Marlins, in which he threw four scoreless innings with no hits, no walks, and four strikeouts, according to Max Goodman of NJ.com. Manaea averaged just 88.3 mph and topped out at 89.9 mph while throwing 52 total pitches. The 88.3 mph is lower than his average fastball velocity in his first two starts of the spring and 3.4 mph slower than his average (91.7) during the regular-season in 2025. The 34-year-old veteran was unable to repeat his late-career resurgence in 2024 during the 2025 campaign, as he only made 15 appearances (12 starts) due to injuries and held a poor 5.64 ERA (4.39 FIP), 1.22 WHIP, and 75:12 K: BB in 60 2/3 innings pitched. Manaea doesn't seem concerned about his lack of velocity this spring and thinks he'll gain a couple of ticks on the radar gun once the regular season starts. Injuries and inconsistency make Manaea a late-round dart throw, at best, for starting depth in upcoming fantasy drafts.

Sean Manaea Not Concerned About Lowered Velocity

New York Mets left-hander Sean Manaea doesn't have an explanation for his lower velocity in spring training -- it was in the 89-90 mph range on Thursday -- but he's not concerned about it at this point, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. Manaea said he will ideally get up to 92-93 mph once the adrenaline of the regular season hits. The 34-year-old veteran southpaw allowed three runs on six hits while walking one and striking out four in 2 2/3 innings in his Grapefruit League start on Thursday against the St. Louis Cardinals. Manaea isn't the only pitcher dealing with lower velocity in spring training, and it's not always something to be concerned with. To bounce back in 2026 for the Mets, Manaea needs to stay healthy. He battled elbow and oblique injuries last year and struggled to a 5.64 ERA after having a late-career breakout in 2024. Manaea is a risk/reward late-round target for fantasy managers.

Sean Manaea Trying to Return to Previous Arm Slot

New York Mets left-hander Sean Manaea performed like an ace in the second half of 2024 after lowering his arm slot to emulate Chris Sale. In 2025, Manaea went even lower with his arm slot, but it didn't work, and he also dealt with elbow and oblique injuries before finishing with a 5.64 ERA in just 60 2/3 innings. The Athletic's Will Sammon writes that Manaea is "one of the Mets' biggest X-factors" in 2026, and while working with Tread Athletics over the offseason, he is "closer to where he was at his best in 2024" in terms of his revised arm slot. The 34-year-old veteran southpaw is also feeling totally healthy this spring. Pitching coach Justin Willard describes Manaea's fastball as "elite" because it's "a different pitch than hitters are used to seeing." Manaea has relied mostly on his fastball and sweeper in recent seasons, but he's working more on his changeup to potentially bring it back. Manaea isn't a bad late-round flier in fantasy drafts to mitigate the risk of an aging pitcher with two above-average seasons since 2020.

Sean Manaea to Start on Sunday

New York Mets starting pitcher Sean Manaea will take the mound for Sunday's game against the Miami Marlins. The Mets will hand the ball to Manaea in the important regular-season finale. They'll need to lean on their left-hander who has struggled in September. In five outings this month, Manaea holds a 7.64 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP, so he could be on a short leash. It'll be interesting to see how the Mets play this one with their season on the line. Manaea isn't a recommended streaming option given his struggles this month.

Sean Manaea to Start on Sunday

New York Mets left-hander Sean Manaea will start on Sunday against the Washington Nationals, Laura Albanese of Newsday reports. Right-hander Clay Holmes had been scheduled for the start, but he'll instead follow Manaea in relief. The Mets went with the opposite arrangement on Sept. 16 (Holmes started, Manaea came out of the bullpen) and pulled off an 8-3 win over the San Diego Padres. Manaea threw five frames of one-run ball to earn the victory in his second relief outing of 2025. In 12 appearances (10 starts) this season, the 33-year-old has gone 2-3 with a 5.40 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP, and 68 strikeouts against 10 walks. He faced the Nationals on Aug. 21 and took the loss after surrendering four earned runs over 4 2/3 innings.

Sean Manaea Goes on Paternity List

The New York Mets have placed left-hander Sean Manaea on the paternity list. Manaea will miss anywhere from one to three days. The 33-year-old has mostly worked out of the Mets' rotation this season, but after a seven-start stretch in which he posted a 7.71 ERA, they moved him to the bullpen earlier this week. Manaea was successful following starter Clay Holmes in a win over the San Diego Padres on Tuesday, as he threw five innings of one-run, four-hit ball with four strikeouts against one walk. He's expected to relieve Holmes again on Sunday against the Washington Nationals.

Sean Manaea Shifting to Bullpen

New York Mets starting pitcher Sean Manaea is expected to move to the bullpen and work into Tuesday's game following starter Clay Holmes, reports Will Sammon and Tim Britton of The Athletic. He was available out of the pen on Sunday, but ultimately was not needed. The Mets have had a crowded rotation after calling up Jonah Tong, Brandon Sproat, and Nolan McLean over the past month, and they are deciding to consolidate that into a standard five-man rotation for the time being. That leaves Manaea as the odd man out, as he's allowed 28 runs over his past seven starts spanning 32 innings. The 33-year-old has struck out an impressive 64 batters in 50 innings on the season, but he has ultimately given up too much hard contact to be effective.

Sean Manaea to Start on Friday

New York Mets left-hander Sean Manaea will get the second half of the season kicked off and start in the series opener versus the visiting Cincinnati Reds at Citi Field on Friday, according to the New York Post's Mike Puma. Manaea will be followed in the rotation by right-hander Clay Holmes for Game 2 on Saturday and left-hander David Peterson in the series finale on Sunday. Due to shoulder and elbow issues, Manaea didn't make his season debut until the final game of the first half of the season on Sunday, when he allowed a run while striking out seven in 3 1/3 innings of relief against the Kansas City Royals. The 33-year-old southpaw appeared to pick up right where he left off in a resurgent 2024 season, which is encouraging for fantasy managers that stashed him in the first half. Manaea could be limited from a workload perspective in his first start on Friday and will be facing a middling Reds offense.

Sean Manaea Fans Seven, Takes Loss in Season Debut

New York Mets left-hander Sean Manaea (0-1) made his season debut and took the loss in a 3-2 decision against the Kansas City Royals on Sunday. The Mets activated Manaea on Sunday after he sat out the first three-plus months of the season with oblique and elbow injuries. Despite the outcome, Manaea pitched well in his return. The 33-year-old came on in relief in the sixth and wound up throwing 3 1/3 innings of one-run ball with seven strikeouts on 65 pitches (44 strikes). While Manaea didn't hand out any free passes, he did scatter five hits, including Nick Loftin's walk-off single in the ninth. Looking ahead to the second half of the season, Manaea will be a welcome addition to the Mets' rotation. In 2024, his first year as a Met, he went 12-6 with a 3.47 ERA, a 1.08 WHIP, and 184:63 K:BB across a career-high 181 2/3 frames.
