Sung-Mun Song Exits Early on Thursday With Oblique Tightness

San Diego Padres infielder Sung-Mun Song (oblique) was pulled from Thursday's Cactus League game early against the Seattle Mariners with tightness in his right oblique, according to AJ Cassavell of MLB.com. It's the same oblique that Song injured in the offseason, but manager Craig Stammen said his exit on Thursday was "precautionary." For now, the 29-year-old South Korean is day-to-day, but his availability for Opening Day in late March could be in question if his oblique continues to be an issue. Going into his first year in the big leagues in the U.S., Song figures to be a utility infielder for the Friars. Most of Song's production in the KBO in Korea came recently, with him hitting .315/.387/.530 with a .917 OPS, career-high 26 home runs, 90 RBI, 103 runs scored, and 25 steals in 144 games in 2025. Song has a nice combination of power and contact, but playing time will be limited, and fantasy managers in deeper leagues should expect an adjustment to the velocity of MLB pitching.

Sung-Mun Song to Make Spring Training Debut Soon

The San Diego Union-Tribune's Kevin Acee reports that San Diego Padres infielder Sung-Mun Song (oblique) is scheduled to make his Cactus League debut in spring training in the coming days after recovering from a minor oblique injury that he suffered while taking batting practice last month. The 29-year-old took live batting practice in camp on Thursday and is itching to make his spring training debut for the Friars. San Diego has had Song move around this spring in preparation for a super-utility role that could see him play some third base, second base, shortstop, and even left field. Barring injuries around the field for the Padres in 2026, Song will likely be a bench player in his first year in the United States, making him avoidable in mixed fantasy leagues. Song makes plenty of contact and has decent power, but we've seen Korean hitters in the past struggle initially with the velocity of MLB pitchers.

Sung-Mun Song Set for Utility Role in San Diego

San Diego Padres infielder Sung-Mon Song said that he's been told that he'll work at third base, second base, first base, and maybe some outfield as he enters his first major-league season, according to Sammy Levitt of 97.3 The Fan. The Padres signed the 29-year-old to a four-year, $15 million contract in December after he mostly played the hot corner in the Korean Baseball Organization for the Kiwoom Heroes. The Friars are set at third with All-Star Manny Machado, obviously, so Song is expected to bounce around as a super-utility guy in 2026. He could also compete for playing time at designated hitter with newcomer Miguel Andujar. Song came on strong the last two years in Korea and displayed more power at the plate, but it remains to be seen how it'll translate to MLB. Fantasy managers shouldn't be expecting much as Song transitions to better competition.

Sung-Mun Song Suffers Oblique Injury

San Diego Padres infielder Sung-Mun Song (oblique) is expected to miss four weeks while recovering from an oblique injury that he suffered during a recent batting practice session, according to Jee-ho Yoo of Yonhap News Agency. Yoo notes that Song recently visited a clinic in Yokohama, Japan, to receive extensive treatment before arriving in Arizona for his first MLB spring training. The four-week timeline indicates that Song should be ready near the start of camp. The 29-year-old inked a deal with the Padres after an impressive two-year stretch in the KBO, during which he posted a .327 batting average with 45 home runs, 194 RBI, 46 stolen bases, a 10.6% walk rate, and a 14.3% strikeout rate. Song primarily played third base with the Kiwoom Heroes, but he also earned reps at second base and first base. His versatility gives him value with the Padres, whose left side of the infield is typically patrolled by Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts. As a result, he'll likely play second base for San Diego.
