Travis Sykora to Undergo Tommy John Surgery, Pushing Timeline to 2027

The Washington Nationals received unfortunate news Monday, confirming that top pitching prospect Travis Sykora (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery, likely sidelining him for the entire 2026 season. Sykora had been dominant through four minor league levels this season, posting a 44.3% strikeout rate at High-A, and was expected to make his MLB debut in 2026. However, after just two starts and 4 2/3 innings at Double-A, his season is now over. Despite the setback, Sykora remains a top stash in dynasty formats, as his long-term upside is undeniable.

Travis Sykora Will Miss Two-Three Weeks

Washington Nationals right-hander Travis Sykora (tricep) will be shut down for two to three weeks as he recovers from lower right triceps soreness. The 21-year-old exited Saturday's start after just one inning, sparking concern among fantasy managers. Sykora has avoided a significant injury and is expected to return by the end of July. The timing of the setback will force Sykora to miss the 2025 MLB Futures Game, but his overall trajectory remains intact. Baseball America's preseason No. 59 prospect, Sykora, has rapidly climbed four minor league levels before the All-Star break. Over 12 starts, he's racked up 79 strikeouts across 45 1/3 innings. Signed by the Nationals in 2023, Sykora boasts four plus-pitches, including a high-octane fastball that touches 96 mph and a deceptive mid-80s splitter. Dynasty managers should remain confident, as the future looks bright for the hard-throwing righty.

Travis Sykora Strikes Out Six in Double-A Debut

Washington Nationals pitching prospect Travis Sykora made his Double-A debut on Sunday with mixed results. Impressively, the right-hander struck out five of the first six batters he faced, however, eight of the next 13 batters reached base via hit or walk. All told, the Nats' top prospect allowed four earned runs on four hits and five walks while striking out six in 3 2/3 innings pitched. Command wasn't an issue before this latest start, registering an 8.0 percent walk rate in the previous 30 starts in his minor league career, which is right around average. Perhaps the 6-foot-6 hurler was working on some things, so look for him to take a step forward in his next start, which should come later this week.

Travis Sykora Getting Promoted to Double-A Harrisburg

Washington Nationals pitching prospect Travis Sykora is being promoted to Double-A Harrisburg after breezing through his first eight starts of the season (two at Single-A, six at High-A). The 21-year-old got a late start after having offseason hip surgery, but has posted a 1.01 ERA, 0.64 WHIP, and an astounding 36.2 percent K-BB% with 56 strikeouts in only 35.2 innings pitched (14.13 K/9) since May 14. The Nats' top-ranked prospect posted similarly striking numbers last year at Single-A, tallying 129 Ks in 85 IP (13.66 K/9) with a 2.33 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP in 20 starts. If he can impress at Double-A, he could be on pace for a couple of starts at Triple-A before the season is out and would be knocking on the door to the majors in 2026. That being the case, fantasy managers in dynasty leagues should be looking to stash the 6-foot-6 hurler because he has the look of a frontline starter in the bigs.

Washington Nationals right-handed pitching prospect Travis Sykora took a slight step back on Wednesday during his start against High-A Asheville. Since joining High-A Wilmington, the No. 61-ranked prospect in the sport has posted an impressive 1.52 ERA with a stellar 0.68 WHIP across 23 2/3 innings. Travis Sykora Strikes Out Nine in First Start at High-A

Washington Nationals pitching prospect Travis Sykora dominated in his High-A debut on Sunday. The team's top-ranked prospect tossed four scoreless innings for Wilmington, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out nine of the 13 batters he faced. The 6-foot-6 righty struck out 129 batters in 85 innings last year at Single-A, registering a ridiculous 39.2 percent strikeout rate. After just two starts there this season, the Nats promoted the former third-round draft pick, and he looks like he's up for the challenge so far. The 21-year-old should get a taste of Double-A by the end of the year, and at this rate, he could be in line for a major league debut sometime next year. With the type of strikeout numbers he's putting up, dynasty managers should be on high alert.

Travis Sykora Comes Off IL, Will Start For Single-A Fredericksburg On Wednesday

Washington Nationals pitching prospect Travis Sykora (hip) has been activated from the injured list and is slated to start for Single-A Fredericksburg on Wednesday. The former third-overall draft pick made two rehab starts with the team's Florida Complex League affiliate, allowing one earned run on one hit and one walk while striking out a whopping 14 batters in only five innings of work. The 6-foot-6 hurler displayed tremendous strikeout stuff last year as well in his first taste of professional baseball, posting a 2.33 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, and a 39.2 percent strikeout rate (31.0 percent K-BB%) in 20 starts (85 IP). If all goes well, expect the righty to get a bump to High-A or even Double-A later this year. Washington's top-ranked prospect has an ETA of 2027 per MLB.com, but looks like he's got the potential to arrive sooner than that.
