Tres Barrera Signs Minor-League Deal With Cardinals
Free-agent catcher Tres Barrera signed a minor-league deal with the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday that includes an invitation to major-league spring training, according to a source. Barrera has spent three major-league seasons with the Washington Nationals, slashing .231/.317/.315 with a .631 OPS, two home runs, 14 RBI and 10 runs scored in 162 plate appearances over 51 games. In 19 games last year, he went 9-for-50 with no homers, four RBI and 16 strikeouts at the plate. The 28-year-old will most likely begin the 2023 campaign in the minors for the Cardinals as catching depth behind Willson Contreras, Andrew Knizner and Ivan Herrera.
The Washington Nationals announced on Monday that they have optioned catcher Tres Barrera to Triple-A Rochester. The Nationals will be calling up top catching prospect Keibert Ruiz at some point today and Barrera loses his big-league gig as a result. Barrera held his own in 91 at-bats with a .264 batting average to go along with two home runs and 10 RBI. There is a good chance that Barrera won't be in Triple-A long and he could return to play behind Ruiz and Riley Adams when rosters expand in September. Although it's not clear how much playing time Ruiz will get, he is worth rostering in all formats with his potential at a tough position to get production from.
Washington Nationals catcher Tres Barrera led the way for the Nationals offensively Tuesday, going 3-for-4 with a two-run home run in a 5-1 victory over the Miami Marlins. It's Barrera's second home run of the season. In 86 at-bats this year, Barrera has put together a .279/.374/.407 slash line with eight runs and 10 RBI. That puts him on the radar for two-catcher leagues, especially as he stands to garner most of the playing time the rest of the way.
Washington Nationals catcher Tres Barrera hit his first home run of the season against the Miami Marlins Monday while going 2-for-5. He scored two runs in the game. The home run came off of Marlins starting pitcher Ross Detwiler. Barrera is getting the lion's share of at-bats behind the plate with Alex Avila and Yan Gomes out with injuries, and he could be an option for fantasy managers in two-catcher formats if he can keep up his recent success. Barrera has an .882 OPS for the year in 23 at-bats.
