Vince Velasquez Undergoes Season-Ending Surgery

Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Vince Velasquez (elbow) underwent season-ending right elbow surgery, according to sources. It's a pretty disappointing development for everyone involved after Velasquez was initially diagnosed with elbow inflammation when he landed on the injured list on May 28. The 31-year-old right-hander was in the midst of a solid first season in Pittsburgh before the injury, going 4-4 with a 3.86 ERA (3.90 FIP), 1.31 WHIP, 14 walks and 37 strikeouts in eight starts covering 37 1/3 innings. It's a tough development for Vasquez, as he's set to be a free agent this winter. Fantasy managers in deep-mixed, single-year leagues that had been stashing him can now safely send him to the waiver wire.

Vince Velasquez Placed On The 15-Day Injured List

Pittsburgh Pirates right-handed pitcher Vince Velasquez (elbow) has been placed on the 15-day injured list with right elbow discomfort. Velasquez, who was just activated from the IL prior to Saturday's start against the Mariners, only lasted two innings in the outing before being pulled. He's heading for his second stint on the injured list due to inflammation in the same elbow. He should be out a while this second time around. Meanwhile, Cody Bolton was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis in a corresponding move.

Vince Velasquez Removed With Elbow Discomfort

Pittsburgh Pirates right-handed pitcher Vince Velasquez (elbow) was removed from Saturday's start against the Seattle Mariners with right elbow discomfort. He allowed four runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three across two innings before leaving. The 30-year-old just returned from the injured list on Saturday after missing the last few weeks with elbow inflammation. He exited Saturday's game with inflammation in the same elbow and is considered day-to-day. Velasquez owns a 3.86 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 37 strikeouts over 37 1/3 innings in 2023. The veteran right-hander's next start is in question, and the Pirates should have an update on Velasquez after further evaluation.

Vince Velasquez Activated From The IL, Will Start Saturday

Pittsburgh Pirates right-handed pitcher Vince Velasquez (elbow) was activated from the 15-day injured list and will start Saturday against the Seattle Mariners. The 30-year-old hurler missed three weeks with right elbow inflammation but he's ready to go for Saturday's tilt in Seattle. Velasquez had quietly put together a great first season with the Pirates, recording a 3.06 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 34:13 K/BB ratio over 35 1/3 innings (seven starts). He should be up for streaming consideration against the Mariners' struggling offense

Vince Velasquez Likely To Return This Weekend

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Derek Shelton said that starting pitcher Vince Velasquez (elbow) will likely return from the injured list to face the Seattle Mariners this weekend. Mitch Keller and Roansy Contreras are slated to start the first two games of the series, so Velasquez will likely return on Sunday and bump Luis L. Ortiz from Pittsburgh's rotation. In his only minor-league rehab start for Triple-A Indianapolis last Saturday, Velasquez tossed 4 2/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts. The 30-year-old right-hander should have a pretty normal pitch count in his first start back, but fantasy managers should still consider him a bit risky. Velasquez has been solid in seven starts for the Bucs in 2023, posting a 3.06 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 34 K's in 35 1/3 frames.

Vince Velasquez To Throw Side Session Wednesday

Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Vince Velasquez (elbow) will throw a side session on Wednesday and make a minor-league rehab start later in the week with Triple-A Indianapolis, according to director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk. Velasquez threw a successful live batting practice session on Monday and is getting close to a rehab assignment. The 30-year-old right-hander is on the shelf with inflammation in his right elbow, but barring a setback, he should be back in Pittsburgh's starting rotation soon. Before his arm injury, he had been impressive, sporting a 3.06 ERA (4.04 FIP), 1.16 WHIP, 13 walks and 34 strikeouts in 35 1/3 innings over his first seven starts of the season.

Vince Velasquez To Throw Live Batting Practice Next Week

Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Vince Velasquez (elbow) will throw live batting practice early next week, and the team is optimistic he'll miss the minimum amount of time on the injured list, according to director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk. Velasquez was placed on the 15-day injured list on May 5 with right-elbow inflammation, but he could return to the team's starting rotation around May 20. The 30-year-old veteran has been solid through his first seven starts for the Bucs in 2023, posting a 3.06 ERA (4.06 FIP), 1.16 WHIP, 13 walks and 34 strikeouts in 35 1/3 innings pitched. There isn't a ton of upside with Velasquez, but he's at least worth streaming in deeper leagues if he continues to pitch well upon his return from the injured list.

Vince Velasquez Placed On 15-Day Injured List

Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Vince Velasquez (elbow) has been placed on the 15-day injured list on Friday. The right-hander was forced to exit early during his start on Thursday due to right elbow discomfort. He downplayed the issue, but clearly it's a little more serious than a day-to-day injury. That being said, the Pirates plan on having Velasquez undergo additional testing. It's uncertain who is going to take his spot in the starting rotation. Right-hander Chase De Jong has been activated and recalled to the MLB, so he'll likely get a chance. Velasquez has posted a 3.06 ERA (3.79 FIP), 1.17 WHIP, 12 walks and 32 strikeouts through seven starts this season.

Vince Velasquez Leave's Early With Right-Elbow Discomfort

Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Vince Velasquez (elbow) left his start early on Thursday against the Tampa Bay Rays due to right-elbow discomfort, the team announced. Velasquez's velocity took a dip in the ballgame as well, and he was removed in the bottom of the fourth inning after he allowed a run on two hits (one home run) while walking one and striking out two in three innings of work. There's a good chance the 30-year-old veteran will need to go on the injured list, but we'll update you when we know more about the injury. Before his start against Tampa, Velasquez had an 18-inning scoreless streak going and had an impressive 3.06 ERA (3.79 FIP), 1.17 WHIP, 12 walks and 32 strikeouts in 32 1/3 innings over his first six starts of the year.

Vince Velasquez Agrees With Pirates

According to a tweet from ESPN's Kiley McDaniel, the Pittsburgh Pirates reportedly have an agreement with right-hander Vince Velasquez. McDaniel tweeted the following on Tuesday: "Source: Free agent RHP Vince Velasquez has an agreement on a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates." Velasquez appeared in 27 games for the Chicago White Sox last season, nine of which were starts. He pitched to a 4.78 ERA and a 4.25 FIP in 75.1 innings of work for the American League Central franchise while logging 69 strikeouts compared to just 25 walks. The veteran also registered a hold while pitching out of the bullpen.
