Xander Bogaerts Worth a Waiver-Wire Pickup After Two-Hit Game on Sunday?

San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts hit .292 (26-for-89) in April and also had five home runs, a double, 15 RBI, 14 runs scored, and three stolen bases as one of the team's most consistent hitters. It led to an uptick in fantasy managers picking him up off the waiver wire. Bogaerts had two hits in the team's 5-2 loss in the series finale on Sunday against the Athletics, but he has cooled off considerably at the plate recently and in May. His two hits on Sunday broke a streak of three straight hitless games, and the 33-year-old veteran is hitting only .211 (15-for-71) with two home runs, a double, seven RBI, five steals, and eight runs scored in 21 games in May. Since May 13, Bogaerts has gone 6-for-34 (.176) with an RBI, three steals, three runs, three walks, and eight strikeouts in 10 games played. Overall, the four-time All-Star is slashing a modest .250/.320/.383 with a .703 OPS, seven home runs, 24 RBI, eight steals, and 22 runs across 50 games. At the very least, Bogaerts has been more attractive in deep-mixed fantasy leagues for his uptick in power in 2026, as he had only 11 homers in each of the last two seasons in San Diego.

Xander Bogaerts a Waiver-Wire Target Amid Power Resurgence?

San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts is an intriguing waiver wire option for fantasy baseball managers as he shows off increased power. Bogaerts hit just 11 homers in each of his last two seasons, but he's already up to seven homers through just 48 games this year. Although he has hit a bit of a lull lately (.160/.192/.160 slash line over his last seven games), the power surge is enough to justify adding Bogaerts off waivers. Outside of the recent skid, he's having a solid season with a .247/.318/.385 slash line, seven homers, seven steals, a 9% walk rate, an 18% strikeout rate, and 104 wRC+. He is still available in 48% of leagues, and he ranks #19 among shortstops in RotoBaller's latest fantasy baseball rankings.

Xander Bogaerts the Leading Candidate to Hit Leadoff for Padres

San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts is the leading candidate to hit leadoff for the team this season, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune's Kevin Acee. Bogaerts has been the team's most common leadoff hitter so far in Cactus League play and appears to be the club's top choice to fill the No. 1 role this year, with outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. moving to the third or fourth spot in the batting order. The 33-year-old veteran's plate skills are declining, but a move to the top of the lineup will definitely help him get more plate appearances and perhaps rack up some more counting stats, at least in runs scored. Second baseman Jake Cronenworth is another candidate for manager Craig Stammen to hit leadoff this year. Bogaerts hit 11 homers for the second straight year in 2025 and also had a career-best 20 steals, but he was mostly underwhelming. A move to the leadoff spot will make him slightly more attractive as middle-infield depth with middling power and speed.

Can Xander Bogaerts Play a Fully Healthy Season in 2026?

Entering his age-33 season, San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts is not the player he once was at his peak. However, the veteran was still a useful hitter when healthy in 2025, hitting .263/.328/.391 with 11 home runs, 53 RBI, 63 runs scored, and 20 stolen bases across 552 plate appearances. Bogaerts is also locked into everyday playing time at or near the top of the top-heavy Padres' lineup, which could help him rack up counting stats. However, Bogaerts has not posted a barrel rate north of 7.0% since 2021, so his ability to consistently hit for power and drive in runs is limited. Injuries are also starting to take their toll. Bogaerts has missed at least 25 games in each of the past two seasons while battling shoulder and foot ailments. The durability question marks are particularly damaging for a player of Bogaerts' profile, as his path to fantasy production relies on his ability to be a compiler across the counting categories. Bogaerts checks in as RotoBaller's 26th-ranked shortstop heading into 2026.

Xander Bogaerts Reinstated and Starting on Tuesday

The San Diego Padres announced that they reinstated infielder Xander Bogaerts (foot) from the 10-day injured list on Tuesday and optioned infielder Will Wagner to the Arizona Complex League in a corresponding move. Bogaerts is making the start at shortstop and is batting second in his return to the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers and left-hander Bruce Zimmermann. The 32-year-old will make his return from a fractured foot as the Padres look to get him some at-bats in the final week of the regular season before the playoffs begin early next week. Bogaerts will be playing in his first big-league game since Aug. 27, so fantasy managers setting DFS lineups should probably look to fade him, especially since he has hit .182 with a .523 OPS in 11 career at-bats against Zimmermann.

Xander Bogaerts Won't be Activated on Monday

San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts (foot) is not expected to be activated in time for Monday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Padres were hopeful they'd get Bogaerts back for the series opener. Sadly, it looks like Bogaerts will need at least another day to get ready to play. He was able to go through his pregame workout without any issues on Monday. The Padres have just elected to give him another day to rest and get healthy. Jose Iglesias will cover shortstop and bat eighth versus right-hander Freddy Peralta. Fantasy managers should check back on Tuesday to see if Bogaerts is back.

Xander Bogaerts Expected to be Activated on Monday

San Diego Padres infielder Xander Bogaerts (foot) was scheduled to do an on-field workout on Friday. Sadly, that session was rained out, so Bogaerts return to the field will be pushed back slightly. Now, the plan is for Bogaerts to be activated from the injured list ahead of Monday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers. He'll continue to workout with the team, but the Padres are going to wait a few more days before bringing Bogaerts back into the mix. This season, Bogaerts is slashing .262/.330/.387 with 10 home runs, 49 RBI, and 20 steals in 131 games. He should be able to give fantasy managers in the playoffs a boost down the stretch.

Xander Bogaerts Could Return This Weekend

San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts (foot) worked out at the team's spring training facility in Arizona the last couple of days and could come off the 10-day injured list to rejoin the team this weekend for a series in Chicago against the White Sox, according to manager Mike Shildt. Bogaerts has been running, fielding, and hitting against live pitching in recent days and hasn't suffered any setbacks. It looks like he could return to the big-league roster without going on a minor-league rehab assignment. The 32-year-old veteran has been out since late August with a non-displaced fracture in his left foot. He should return to regular starting duties at shortstop in San Diego when he's ready, allowing Jake Cronenworth to shift back to second and Luis Arraez back to first base/designated hitter duties. In his third year in SD, Bogaerts is hitting .262/.330/.387 with only 10 homers, 49 RBI, and a career-high 20 steals in 131 games.

Xander Bogaerts Targeting a Return During Final Week of Regular Season

San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts (foot), who is recovering from a left foot non-displaced fracture, is targeting a return during the final week of the regular season, according to MLB.com. Bogaerts was able to take ground balls, track pitches from live arms, and swing in the cage on Saturday, and is getting closer to continuing his rehab in Arizona, according to manager Mike Shildt. The 32-year-old veteran isn't going to help fantasy managers from here on out, but he should be back with the Padres if they get into the postseason in October. He was placed on the 10-day injured list back on Aug. 29 after fouling a ball off his left foot on Aug. 27. Lately, the Friars have moved Jake Cronenworth from second to shortstop, although Jose Iglesias and Mason McCoy are also options at the 6 if SD wants to prioritize defense over offense.

Xander Bogaerts Targeting Late-Season Return

San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts (foot) has resumed light baseball activities and hopes to come off the 10-day injured list for the final week of the regular season. Bogaerts has been out for almost two weeks after fouling a ball off his left foot and suffering a non-displaced fracture on Aug. 27. Over 131 games and 534 plate appearances this season, the 32-year-old has hit a decent .262/.330/.387 with 10 homers, 49 RBI, 60 runs scored, and 20 stolen bases. The Padres, who hold a wild-card spot and trail the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers by two games, have mostly turned to Jose Iglesias to handle short in Bogaerts' absence.
