Yoshitomo Tsutsugo News
The Los Angeles Dodgers placed infielder Yoshitomo Tsutsugo (calf) on the 10-day injured list with a right calf strain on Wednesday. He was acquired from the Rays in mid-May and has started in only six games since being traded. The 29-year-old is slashing .120/.290/.120 across 31 plate appearances for the Dodgers. Tsutsugo mainly serves as a pinch-hitter and isn't worth rostering in most fantasy formats. Pitcher Tony Gonsolin (shoulder) was activated from the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move.
Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman/outfielder Yoshitomo Tsutsugo will make his Dodgers debut on Tuesday night, as he will start in left field and bat seventh against the Diamondbacks. He's been less than impressive at the plate to start his career, slashing .187/.292/.336 over two seasons with Tampa Bay. However the Dodgers feel that they can unlock his potential at the plate, and possibly display close to the 30-homer power Tsutsugo had shown in Japan. Managers should still leave him on the waiver-wire, but he'll be an interesting potential sleeper to keep an eye on.
The Los Angeles Dodgers believe they can work with newly acquired first baseman Yoshitomo Tsutsugo to unlock his potential, according to Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register. Tsutsugo has struggled in his two seasons with the Rays, slashing .187/.292/.336 with eight home runs, 29 RBI and 32 runs scored after averaging over 31 home runs a season from 2014 through 2019 in Japan. Plunkett reports that the Dodgers have compared footage of Tsutsugo playing in Japan and in MLB, and say that "he's a shell of himself," but they believe they can help him turn things around at the plate. It's far too early to look into acquiring him, but if the Dodgers are correct and they can fix Tsutsugo's approach at the plate, he could become an interesting waiver-wire sleeper later in the season.
