Austin Seferian-Jenkins News
The New England Patriots released tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins, according to a source. Seferian-Jenkins is stepping away for a month for personal issues and the club will release him when he does that. ASF is still only 26 years old but has had numerous off-field issues in his career that have held him back. Even with the Patriots he wouldn't have been a very attractive fantasy option after catching only 11 passes for 90 yards and a touchdown in five games with Jacksonville in 2018 due to injuries. Benjamin Watson will be suspended for the first four weeks, so Matt LaCosse, Stephen Anderson and rookie Andrew Beck will be next up as they try to replace future Hall of Famer Rob Gronkowski.
The New England Patriots signed free-agent tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins to an undisclosed one-year deal on Wednesday, according to a source. ASF has had off-field issues throughout his career and has also been set back by injuries, but the Pats decided to take a flier on him after Rob Gronkowski hung up his cleats in the offseason. Seferian-Jenkins had just 11 catches for 90 yards and a touchdown in five games due to injury in his lone season with Jacksonville. He'll have a chance to carve out a role in New England as their top pass catcher, but he'll need to stay on track and stay healthy. He'll be fighting for playing time with Jacob Hollister, Stephen Anderson and Matt LaCosse.
The Jacksonville Jaguars declined the 2019 option for tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins on Tuesday, making him a free agent. He started the first five games of the season and caught 11 passes for 90 yards and a touchdown before missing the final 11 games with a core muscle injury. His best year came in 2017 with the Jets when he had 50 catches for 357 yards and three touchdowns. Between injuries and off-field issues, teams are unlikely to be knocking the door down to sign ASF this offseason.
