The Miami Dolphins placed tight end A.J. Derby (foot) on Injured Reserve on Tuesday and claimed cornerback Dee Delaney in a corresponding move. Derby had just three catches on five targets for 48 yards and a touchdown in three games for Miami in 2018 as the backup tight end. Rookie Mike Gesicki will continue to be the main pass-catching tight end, but his development has been slow in one of the most frustrating offenses in football.
Miami Dolphins tight end A.J. Derby (foot) is inactive for Miami's Week 13 matchup with the Bills. Derby has three catches in four games played all season, so he isn't much of a fantasy option anyway. This could mean more snaps for Mike Gesicki, but Gesicki is a desperation play at tight end at best.
Miami Dolphins wide receiver Devante Parker (shoulder) and tight end A.J. Derby (foot, knee) are both questionable for Week 13 against the Bills. Parker should be able to suit up this Sunday and could see increased targets with Danny Amendola (knee) doubtful. Still, Parker is a risky WR4/flex, as he has eight catches for 53 yards in the last two games. The Bills have one of the better secondaries in the NFL, too. Derby hasn't seen game action since Nov. 11 and has just three catches on five targets for 48 yards and a touchdown in four games in 2018.
Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jakeem Grant (Achilles) and tight end A.J. Derby (foot, knee) are both inactive in Week 12 against the Colts. Grant could miss more time but is expected to return before the end of the season. He belongs on the waiver wire. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill will have Danny Amendola, Devante Parker and Kenny Stills as his three receivers against Indy. Rookie tight end Mike Gesicki should remain the primary pass-catching tight end, but he is merely a touchdown-dependent TE2.
Miami Dolphins wide receiver Kenny Stills (groin) is active against the Jets in Week 9, while tight end A.J. Derby (foot) will miss another game. Stills was a game-time decision but will give it a go on Sunday. His return after a one-game absence is bad news for Devante Parker and Danny Amendola, but Stills may still be third in the receiving pecking order. The deep threat really hasn't done much since Week 1 and will remain on waiver wires in most leagues. With Derby still sidelined, rookie Mike Gesicki will continue seeing most of the work as the main pass-catching tight end. He hasn't done anything with increased work this year, leaving him as a low-end TE2.
Kenny Stills, A.J. Derby Questionable Against Jets
Miami Dolphins wide receiver Kenny Stills (groin) and tight end A.J. Derby (foot) are both questionable for Week 9 against the Jets. Neither Stills nor Derby look particularly close to returning to action this weekend. That means that Devante Parker and Danny Amendola will continue to be the team's top wideouts with Albert Wilson done for the season. Rookie Mike Gesicki will continue to dominate the tight end snaps, but he has done very little with them all season. Cornerback Xavien Howard (ankle) is also questionable to play.
Miami Dolphins rookie tight end Mike Gesicki (shoulder) is active for Thursday night against the Texans, while A.J. Derby (foot) will miss another game. With receivers Albert Wilson and Kenny Stills also out injured, the Dolphins may need to rely on Gesicki more often in the passing game. However, despite his pass-catching upside, Gesicki has caught just 12 of 17 targets for 132 yards in seven games to begin his rookie season. He'll remain a desperation TE2.
Mike Gesicki, A.J. Derby Questionable Against Texans
Miami Dolphins tight ends Mike Gesicki (shoulder) and A.J. Derby (foot) are both listed as questionable for Thursday night against the Texans. Derby was limited on Wednesday after missing Monday and Tuesday, while Gesicki practiced in full on Wednesday after two limited sessions earlier in the week. Derby also missed last week and seems unlikely to play again, while Gesicki should be able to suit up. Despite the upside for Gesicki, he has just 12 catches on 17 targets for 132 yards in seven games this year. Without Derby around last week, he had just three catches for 44 yards. Gesicki will remain a TE2 if he's active.
Miami Dolphins wide receiver Devante Parker (quadriceps) and tight end A.J. Derby (foot) are both inactive for Week 7 against the Lions. Parker and Derby both practiced this week, so they are more of healthy scratches. Parker has played in just two games this year and has just two catches for 40 yards. He's quickly fallen out of favor as a first-round bust, and the Dolphins are looking to trade him before the Oct. 30 deadline. Leave him to the waiver wire if you haven't already done so. Derby's absence means rookie Mike Gesicki should see a healthy amount of snaps, although that hasn't led to him being fantasy relevant at all yet this year. Defensive end Cameron Wake (knee) will return after a two-game absence after having minor knee surgery. His presence is good news for a pass rush looking to make life difficult for quarterback Matthew Stafford.
Miami Dolphins tight end A.J. Derby (foot) was a full participant in practice on Wednesday after being inactive in Week 6. It means that Derby is on track to return this Sunday against the Lions. Derby has only two catches on three targets for 35 yards and a touchdown in three games this year, but his return would mean that rookie Mike Gesicki won't play as many snaps. The Dolphins haven't use the tight end position much at all this year, so neither player is on the fantasy map.
