Charlie McAvoy Out Indefinitely After Facial Surgery

Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy (face) will be out indefinitely after having facial surgery. He took a slap shot to the face in Saturday's win over the Montreal Canadiens. The star blue-liner will be out for a second consecutive game when Boston takes on the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday night. "He's doing good," Bruins head coach Marco Sturm said on Wednesday morning. "He's recovering right now at home, and we still don't know how long he's going to be out for." Henri Jokiharju took McAvoy's spot in the lineup on Monday against the Carolina Hurricanes and had an assist on the team's only goal in a 3-1 loss. On Wednesday, he has a chance to get on a score sheet in back-to-back games for the first time this season.

"Charlie's been dealing with a nagging injury for the last little while here," Bruins head coach Joe Sacco said on Tuesday. This was possibly the best outing of the season for McAvoy, who has been slumping all year offensively. He's only now hit double figures for scoring, producing five goals and five assists in 26 games. He's finished in and around the 50-point mark in three consecutive campaigns, but McAvoy needs to up his scoring pace massively to get there in 2024-25.

The Bruins have managed to thrive without their No. 1 defenseman as they sit second in the NHL with 21 points thanks to a 10-1-1 record on the young campaign.

Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy is appealing his four-game suspension for a hit to the head of Florida Panthers defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson. Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy isn't expected to play over the weekend after leaving Thursday's 2-1 overtime win over Toronto with an upper-body injury. Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy registered an assist on all of the team's goals in Monday's 3-1 victory over the Senators. Jake DeBrusk scored his first goal since returning from injury and David Pastrnak found the net twice. It's McAvoy's second consecutive multi-assist game, and he has amassed nine helpers in total across his past seven appearances.
