Will Borgen Battling Lower-Body Issue

New York Rangers defenseman Will Borgen (lower body) missed Wednesday's practice and may be unavailable on Thursday against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Borgen has registered one assist, four shots, six blocks, and eight hits with a plus-two rating across the first five games of the season. The Rangers have recalled Scott Morrow from the minors to potentially take Borgen's place in the lineup. Connor Mackey is also an option to fill in for Borgen. The Rangers defense has already lost Carson Soucy (upper body), who landed on Injured Reserve Sunday.

Will Borgen Joins Rangers

The New York Rangers have picked up defenseman Will Borgen in a trade with the Seattle Kraken. Additionally, the team received a third-round and sixth-round draft pick in a deal that saw winger Kaapo Kakko go the other way. Borgen looks like a replacement for the recently departed Jacob Trouba, who was traded to Anaheim on Dec. 6. Borgen, who turned 28 on Thursday, has been limited to two points (one goal, one assist) in 33 games with the Kraken this season but brings physicality to the team. He has logged 48 hits this season with 37 blocks. Across the previous two campaigns, Borgen averaged 2.43 hits per game.

Will Borgen And Kraken Settle On Two-Year Deal

Seattle Kraken defenseman Will Borgen has inked a two-year extension with the club. He earned himself a nice $5.4 million deal that comes with a $2.7 million cap hit. By getting the contract sorted, the Kraken avoided an arbitration hearing with Borgen, who was a restricted free agent following a career-best season. The 26-year-old totaled 20 points in 82 games on the Seattle blue line, and he was a big presence on the defensive end, delivering 203 hits and registering 89 blocks. It took Borgen quite some time to settle in the NHL, but he was now found himself a nice role in Seattle and we can expect similar production from him in 2023-24. The Kraken also signed veteran forward Pierre-Edouard Bellemare to a one-year, $775,000 contract Friday.
