Ilya Sorokin Lasts 27 Minutes In Game 3

New York Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin struggled in his 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs debut on Thursday against Carolina in a 3-2 loss. He coughed up three goals on 14 shots before being replaced by Semyon Varlamov. Looking to shift momentum in the series with his team 2-0 down, Islanders head coach Patrick Roy made a change between the sticks, but it backfired badly. Sorokin managed only two saves before allowing the first goal, and his night finished after he had logged only 27:14 of action. Varlamov stopped all eight shots he faced. The team will likely return to Varlamov for Game 4.

Ilya Sorokin To Start Game 3

New York Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin will be the starter for Thursday's Game 3 of the team's first-round series against the visiting Carolina Hurricanes. The Isles went with Semyon Varlamov for the first two games of the series but the team has been out-scored 8-4 so far in the series. However, Varlamov was the hot hand, posting a 1.85 goals-against average and a .939 save percentage from March 28 to April 15. As for Sorokin, the fellow Russian endured a down season, posting a 3.01 GAA and a .909 Sv% in 55 games, just one season after working to a 2.34 GAA and a .924 Sv% in 62 games while finishing as the Vezina Trophy runner-up behind Boston's Linus Ullmark.

Ilya Sorokin Faces Devils Friday

New York Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin will make his third start of the season Friday against the New Jersey Devils. The Islanders begin a back-to-back set, and Sorokin gets the first leg, with Saturday's battle against Buffalo reserved for backup Semyon Varlamov. Sorokin has been in dominant form already at the start of the campaign, saving 40 of 42 shots and winning both of his first two starts. He has a chance to register a second consecutive shutout on Friday after keeping the Coyotes at bay with 14 saves on Tuesday. It's an uncomfortable matchup for Sorokin against a team that's full of offensive talent, but he carries a strong 6-3-0 career record against New Jersey, and the Islanders have dropped just five of the last 21 home outings in this matchup.

Ilya Sorokin Keeps Coyotes From Scoring Tuesday

New York Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin made light work of the Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday, picking up a shutout with only 14 saves in a 1-0 win. The Coyotes faced the Rangers Monday night and appeared to have had no gas left, recording only seven shots on target through the first two periods. Sorokin has done very little wrong at the start of the new season, as he's a perfect 2-0-0 through two starts and owns a 1.00 goals-against average with a .952 save percentage. The Islanders now have a back-to-back coming up against New Jersey and Buffalo, which should also give backup Semyon Varlamov a chance to get some action.

Ilya Sorokin And Semyon Varlamov Extend Stay With Islanders

New York islanders goaltenders Ilya Sorokin and Semyon Varlamov have agreed to contract extensions with the club. Sorokin has inked a big eight-year extension with an average annual value of $8.25 million and Varlamov's new contract will take up $2.75 million of the salary cap for the next four years. Sorokin's contract will kick in next season. The two Russian netminders have given the Islanders one of the best goalie tandems in the league and it looks like they won't be broken up for quite some time. Sorokin and Varlamov combined for a .921 save percentage last season, which was second-best in the league, behind only the dominant Boston Bruins (.931).

Ilya Sorokin Suffers Defeat In Game 1

New York Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin allowed two goals and made 35 saves in Monday's 2-1 loss against the Hurricanes in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference first-round series. New York Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin made 33 saves and allowed two goals in Sunday's 2-1 loss against the Hurricanes. Sorokin surrendered goals to Hurricanes forwards Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Jordan Martinook in the contest, but the Islanders did not provide the offensive support to build their lead in the Eastern Conference wild card race. Sorokin is having an excellent season and he is a strong candidate to be a finalist for the Vezina Trophy, as he has a .923 save percentage, a 2.38 goals against average, five shutouts and a record of 28-27-1 through 58 appearances.

Ilya Sorokin Gets Islanders Back To Winning Ways

New York Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin produced a game-winning performance with a 23-save shutout in Friday's 2-0 victory over Detroit. He picked up his fourth shutout of the season as the team ended a six-game skid. However, Sorokin's record has taken a proper beating, dropping to 16-16-4. Could Friday mark the start of a turnaround? The Islanders have five of their next seven games at the UBS Arena, and Sorokin boasts a .930 save percentage at home, which is the highest in NHL history among goalies to play at least 50 games.
