Ilya Sorokin News
New York Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin will be the starter for Thursday's Game 3 of the team's first-round series against the visiting Carolina Hurricanes. The Isles went with Semyon Varlamov for the first two games of the series but the team has been out-scored 8-4 so far in the series. However, Varlamov was the hot hand, posting a 1.85 goals-against average and a .939 save percentage from March 28 to April 15. As for Sorokin, the fellow Russian endured a down season, posting a 3.01 GAA and a .909 Sv% in 55 games, just one season after working to a 2.34 GAA and a .924 Sv% in 62 games while finishing as the Vezina Trophy runner-up behind Boston's Linus Ullmark.
New York Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin stopped 35-of-37 shots on goal in Monday's 3-2 victory against the Maple Leafs. Sorokin picked up his third win of the season against the Maple Leafs, while surrendering a total of only eight goals across the three meetings. Sorokin improves to a record of 15-12-9 to go along with a 3.13 goals against average and .910 save percentage through 36 appearances, which is tied for the third most across the entire NHL.
New York Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin will make his third start of the season Friday against the New Jersey Devils. The Islanders begin a back-to-back set, and Sorokin gets the first leg, with Saturday's battle against Buffalo reserved for backup Semyon Varlamov. Sorokin has been in dominant form already at the start of the campaign, saving 40 of 42 shots and winning both of his first two starts. He has a chance to register a second consecutive shutout on Friday after keeping the Coyotes at bay with 14 saves on Tuesday. It's an uncomfortable matchup for Sorokin against a team that's full of offensive talent, but he carries a strong 6-3-0 career record against New Jersey, and the Islanders have dropped just five of the last 21 home outings in this matchup.
New York Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin made light work of the Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday, picking up a shutout with only 14 saves in a 1-0 win. The Coyotes faced the Rangers Monday night and appeared to have had no gas left, recording only seven shots on target through the first two periods. Sorokin has done very little wrong at the start of the new season, as he's a perfect 2-0-0 through two starts and owns a 1.00 goals-against average with a .952 save percentage. The Islanders now have a back-to-back coming up against New Jersey and Buffalo, which should also give backup Semyon Varlamov a chance to get some action.
