Chris Paddack News
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Chris Paddack struck out 10 batters in Wednesday's 6-3 win over the Mariners, picking up his fourth win of the season. It wasn't all smooth sailing, however, as he also allowed eight hits and one walk in just five-and-a-third innings pitched. The outing marked the fourth straight start in which the righty has picked up a victory and it was the second time this season he's struck out 10 batters. It seems he's walking a tightrope, though, as the 28-year-old has given up 48 hits and eight walks in 37 1/3 innings (1.50 WHIP), along with six home runs (1.45 HR/9, 14.0% HR/FB%) through seven starts, so use him in season-long fantasy at your own risk. The former eighth-round draft pick can be useful in DFS depending on the matchup, however, as exhibited Wednesday. His next start lines up with the Yankees at home next Tuesday.
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Chris Paddack earned his first win of the season in Monday's 7-0 game against the White Sox. Paddack took advantage of a favorable matchup, pitching seven innings while allowing six hits and no walks with 10 strikeouts. Despite this good start, the 28-year-old's return to the starting rotation has not been very successful. He is now 1-1 with a 5.57 ERA in his first four starts. While he was a fantasy prospect early in his career, fantasy managers should wait to see more consistency from him before trusting him. Paddack will look to build on his success in a decent matchup at the Angels.
Right-hander Chris Paddack is set for his third start of the season as the Minnesota Twins are on the road to play the Baltimore Orioles. Paddack is coming off going 4 2/3 innings while allowing six hits and two runs against the Los Angeles Dodgers. In his career against the Orioles, Paddack is 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA in two starts but hasn't faced the team since May of 2022. Minnesota is 6-9 this season and dropped the first game of the series to Baltimore on Monday.

The young San Diego Padres right-hander really took a step backward after his strong rookie year. Chris Paddack saw big losses in strikeout rate (23.7%), ERA (4.73) and WHIP (1.22) in 2020, really hurting fantasy managers who used a top-50 pick on him. Unfortunately for Paddack, his 2020 numbers seem more believable than his 2019 numbers. He has a very limited arsenal, with 90% of his pitches being either a four-seamer or a changeup. That would be OK if both of those pitches were very good, but his fastball does not seem to be -- .590 expected slugging percentage, 20.9% whiff rate on the pitch last season. That leaves him overly reliant on his great changeup, and you simply cannot get away with that for long in the major leagues. His age (24) and great command (career 5.3% walk rate) keep him relevant for fantasy purposes, and he does have a reasonable price tag for the 2021 season (going outside of the top-30 starting pitchers). That makes him worthy of consideration, but he is unlikely to provide huge dividends, even at this cost.
