Brice Matthews Called Up To Triple-A

The Houston Astros are promoting shortstop/third baseman Brice Matthews to Triple-A Sugar Land. Matthews is Houston's third-ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline and is hitting .286/.405/.531 with 15 homers, 39 RBI, 49 runs scored, and 29 stolen bases in three minor league stops. Drafted 28th overall in the 2023 MLB Draft, Matthews' fast rise gives the Astros a near-major league-ready prospect, something the franchise has lacked in recent years. A strong finish in Triple-A will give Matthews an early jump on making a bid to crack the Opening Day roster next year, making him a player to watch in dynasty formats.

Brice Matthews Goes Deep, Swipes Two Bags

Houston Astros shortstop prospect Brice Matthews went 2-for-5 with a home run and two stolen bases on Sunday evening. This was his second consecutive multi-hit performance, and he extended his hitting streak to four games. Since joining Double-A Corpus Christi in mid-June, the former first-round pick in last year's draft has been in a bit of a slump, holding a mediocre .230 AVG. However, across his past six games, the Nebraska product has held a strong .280 AVG with three home runs and three stolen bases. Matthews is considered the third-best prospect in the Houston system on MLB.com and remains on track to contend for a major league debut next summer.

Brice Matthews Struggling In First Look At Double-A

Houston Astros shortstop prospect Brice Matthews has struggled through his first look at Double-A ball. In 17 games, the former 28th overall pick in last year's draft has posted a .177/.311/.323 line with two home runs, five RBI, four stolen bases, and a 10:25 BB:K ratio. Earlier this summer, Matthews made his High-A debut and needed just 21 games to move up to the next level as he posted a stellar .321/.423/.580 slash line with six home runs, 17 RBI, 10 stolen bases, and a 14:26 BB:K ratio. The Nebraska product was progressing through the minor leagues very quickly but may need to spend the rest of the summer at Double-A to work out his struggles.

Brice Matthews To Be Promoted To Double-A

The Houston Astros are set to promote shortstop prospect Brice Matthews to Double-A Corpus Christi. Matthews, 22, was the club's first-round pick in 2023 and his early success has allowed him to ascend quickly through the Astros system. Between Rookie Ball and High-A Asheville, Matthews hit a combined .340 with six homers, 18 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 94 at-bats. Matthews clearly outplayed the competition and Matthews appears ready to take on better pitching in Double-A. Matthews offers a quick swing that produces enough power to project the shortstop hitting around 20-25 homers a season. Matthews still needs to improve his strike zone, but the adjustments the Astros have made with him thus far have been paying off. Matthews is an up-and-coming name for dynasty managers to start considering.

Brice Matthews Swinging A Hot Bat

Houston Astros shortstop prospect Brice Matthews was the club's first-round pick last year. Houston selected him out of Nebraska and he has wasted no time making an impact, already climbing to No. 3 on MLB Pipeline's ranking of top Astros prospects. The 22-year-old has impressive bat speed, showcasing an ability to hit the ball hard and far. He pulls the ball consistently and has shown a willingness to adapt in the minors, bringing his strikeout rate from 26.3 percent in 2023 to 24 percent in 2024. Defensively, he's a rangy infielder with pure athleticism, but the jury is still out on his ability to play shortstop long-term given some concerns about his throwing accuracy. Last week, Matthews put on a show at the plate. Over the course of six games, he ultimately went 12-for-26 with four homers, seven RBI, four walks, and eight strikeouts. He continued to demonstrate his pure speed, swiping five bags on five attempts. His best game came on June 5 as he went 4-for-4 with two homers and two walks. As long as Matthews continues to swing a hot bat, the buzz about his future will grow louder.

Brice Matthews Hitting Well Since Activation

Houston Astros shortstop prospect Brice Matthews has been having a strong season offensively down on the farm. Matthews is the Astros' No. 3 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, and the Astros' first-round pick in 2023. Matthews, 22, opened the season in Rookie ball but has spent most of his season in High-A Asheville after opening the season on the seven-day injured list with lower-back tightness. Matthews is aggressive at the plate and on the basepaths, but his right-handed swing provides some of the best exit velocities on the farm. Matthews is a former high school quarterback and is very athletic, but the Astros will need to help him improve his plate discipline so that he can reach his full potential. The young shortstop is a couple of seasons away from a potential big-league debut and is a watch-list candidate for dynasty managers to monitor.

Brice Matthews On Minor-League Injured List

Houston Astros shortstop Brice Matthews (back), the team's No. 4 prospect per MLB Pipeline, was placed on the seven-day injured list on May 7 at High-A Asheville with lower-back tightness. Matthews, the team's first-round pick last year, was hitting just .229/.364/.286 with two doubles in 35 games for the Tourists before getting hurt. The 22-year-old has not played since late April after being taken with the 28th overall pick in 2023. Matthews stands at 5-foot-10 and 190 pounds and has plenty of power, enough to eventually be a 20-25-homer guy at the next level. He's an impressive athlete who also played quarterback in his senior season in high school, but his pull-heavy tendencies and high strikeout rate could be an issue as he advances higher up the Astros' minor-league system.
