Cody Bolton Lands on 15-Day Injured List With Back Inflammation

The Houston Astros placed right-hander Cody Bolton (back) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to April 13) on Wednesday with right mid-back inflammation, according to MLB.com's Brian McTaggart. For now, right-hander Spencer Arrighetti will come up from Triple-A Sugar Land to replace Bolton in Houston's starting rotation. With the Astros' rotation missing multiple starting arms, Arrighetti could stick around for a while if he pitches well. The 27-year-old Bolton left his last start early on Sunday against the Seattle Mariners with back tightness, and now he'll be forced to miss at least a couple turns through the rotation. In addition to Bolton, Hunter Brown, Cristian Javier, and Tatsuya Imai are all on the IL in Houston. When the dust settles and some of those pitchers start returning from their injuries, Bolton may not have a rotation spot to come back to, depending on when he heals up. Bolton had a 5.40 ERA and 1.68 WHIP with 11 K's and seven walks in 8 1/3 innings over three outings (two starts) before his injury, and he has a career 5.72 ERA and 1.79 WHIP in 50 1/3 major-league seasons since the start of 2023.

Cody Bolton Having Tests Done on his Back

Houston Astros right-hander Cody Bolton (back) suffered from mid-back tightness and was forced from his start early on Sunday against the Seattle Mariners, according to Chandler Rome of The Athletic. Bolton's back tightness occurred in the area where he was hit by a comebacker in his previous outing against the Colorado Rockies. He said he felt good in the second inning on Sunday and tried to pitch through his back tightness to give the Astros some length. Bolton will undergo more imaging on his back to determine the severity. The Astros just cannot catch a break with their starting pitching staff, with Hunter Brown (shoulder), Cristian Javier (shoulder), and Tatsuya Imai (arm), among others, already on the injured list early in the year. It's unclear yet if Bolton will join them on the IL, but at the very least, he could be forced to skip his next start. Through his first three appearances (two starts) in 2026 with Houston, Bolton has allowed five earned runs on seven hits (one homer) while walking seven and striking out 11 in 8 1/3 innings pitched.

Cody Bolton Signs Minor-League Deal with Astros

The Houston Astros have signed free-agent pitcher Cody Bolton to a minor-league deal with an invite to Spring Training. Bolton only pitched in one game for the Cleveland Guardians last season. That was his lone big league appearance in 2025, but he did pitch 17 games with the Seattle Mariners in 2024. Bolton is a former sixth-round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates from the 2017 draft. He began his career as a starter, but has converted into a bullpen arm. He'll likely serve as organizational depth and start the season in Triple-A.

Guardians Acquire Cody Bolton From Mariners

The Cleveland Guardians announced on Tuesday that they acquired right-hander Cody Bolton from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for cash considerations. After acquiring him, Cleveland optioned him to Triple-A Columbus and moved left-hander John Means (elbow) to the 60-day injured list to make room on the 40-man roster. The 26-year-old Bolton made his MLB debut in 2023 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and pitched last year with the Mariners. In 33 relief appearances over those two seasons, he produced a 5.40 ERA (5.09 FIP) and 1.80 WHIP with 39 strikeouts and 24 walks in 40 innings pitched. He'll serve as relief depth for the Guardians in the minors. In his first two relief outings at Triple-A Tacoma before the trade, Bolton gave up three runs (two earned) while walking three and striking out one in just two innings of work.

Mariners Acquire Cody Bolton From Pirates

The Seattle Mariners acquired right-hander Cody Bolton from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday for cash considerations. Bolton struggled in his first major-league season in 2023 with the Bucs, allowing 15 earned runs on 30 hits (three home runs) while walking 15 and striking out 22 in 21 1/3 innings pitched over 16 appearances out of the bullpen. The 25-year-old has been much more effective with a high strikeout rate in his time in the minors, though, so the Mariners will be hoping to get more out of him to improve his command at the major-league level moving forward. Bolton is completely off the fantasy radar heading into 2024.
