Cody Ponce Diagnosed With ACL Sprain, to Miss "Significant Time"

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Cody Ponce (knee) has been diagnosed with a right ACL sprain after having to be carted off the field in his 2026 season debut on Monday night against the Colorado Rockies, according to Keegan Matheson of MLB.com. More doctors will review Ponce's MRI results to see if there's a full tear for the final diagnosis. Manager John Schneider said the team is "holding onto" hope that he can pitch again this year, but regardless, he's going to miss "significant time." It's a tough break for the 31-year-old veteran, who was making his first start back in the big leagues on Monday since 2021 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Before leaving with his knee injury, Ponce allowed an earned run while walking one and striking out three in 2 1/3 innings of work. He'll likely be placed on the 15-day injured list in the coming days, adding further stress to an already thinned-out Blue Jays starting rotation early on in 2026. UPDATE: Ponce was officially placed on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday.

Cody Ponce Carted Off on Monday With Knee Discomfort

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Cody Ponce (knee) injured his right knee while fielding a ground ball in his first outing of the 2026 season on Monday against the Colorado Rockies, according to Blake Murphy of Sportsnet. Ponce was able to get up and limp around, but he was ultimately carted from the field. The team announced that he has "right-knee discomfort." We won't know more about the severity of his knee injury until he undergoes tests. Hopefully, the 31-year-old can avoid a serious injury in his return to the big leagues. In his first two major-league seasons in 2020 and 2021 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Ponce struggled to a 5.86 ERA and 1.54 WHIP with 48 strikeouts and 17 walks in 55 1/3 innings pitched over 20 appearances (five starts). He spent three years in Japan and one year in Korea before signing with Toronto in the offseason. Ponce only lasted 2 1/3 innings before getting hurt, allowing an earned run on one hit while walking one and striking out three. UPDATE: Ponce will undergo an MRI exam on Tuesday, according to Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.

Can Cody Ponce Emerge as a Viable Fantasy Starter in His MLB Return?

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Cody Ponce has not pitched in an MLB game since 2021. Nevertheless, Toronto signed the 31-year-old right-hander to a three-year, $30 million contract over the winter after Ponce dominated the KBO in 2025. Across 180 2/3 innings (29 starts) for the Hanwha Eagles, Ponce recorded a 17-1 record with a 1.89 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, and 252 strikeouts. With Blue Jays starters Shane Bieber (forearm), Trey Yesavage (shoulder), and Jose Berrios (elbow) all set to open 2026 on the Injured List, Ponce is locked into a rotation role in Toronto to start the year. He's been effective in a limited sample size this spring, recording a 0.66 ERA and 0.80 WHIP with 12 strikeouts across 13 2/3 innings pitched. Ponce should not be expected to replicate the prodigious strikeout rate he produced in Korea last season. However, he could emerge as a solid innings eater with upside and may be worth targeting in the later rounds of fantasy drafts heading into 2026.

Cody Ponce Is Putting Together a Solid Spring

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Cody Ponce has worked eight innings in four spring training games for the Blue Jays, allowing just one run on six hits with four strikeouts. With Jose Berrios (elbow) dealing with an injury issue, Ponce's spot in the Blue Jays rotation is even more secure heading into the season. The 31-year-old signed a three-year, $30 million contract with Toronto in December after earning MVP honors in the KBO in Korea last year while pitching for the Hanwha Eagles. Ponce put together an impressive 1.89 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, and 252 strikeouts in 180 2/3 innings pitched. Before heading overseas, the righty had just a 5.86 ERA, 1.54 WHIP, and 5.47 FIP in 20 appearances with the Pirates. He seems to be ready to readjust to the MLB, and even though his strikeout numbers may not translate, he has been effective in his spring training innings so far. He's a very intriguing option with good upside in mixed leagues, and he is currently the No. 72 SP in Rotoballer's rankings.

Cody Ponce Throws an Inning in Spring Debut

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Cody Ponce made his Grapefruit League debut on Wednesday and threw a clean inning with no walks, no hits, and two strikeouts against the Detroit Tigers. Ponce is an interesting arm going into the 2026 season in the middle of Toronto's starting rotation. The Jays signed him to a three-year, $30 million contract in December after he was named the MVP of the Korean League last year with the Hanwha Eagles, where he had an impressive 1.89 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, and 252:41 K:BB in 180 2/3 innings pitched. Ponce won't have it easy as he returns to the majors in the tough American League East and in a hitter-friendly home ballpark, but he's returning with a better splitter and the addition of a kick-change. The 31-year-old had a 5.86 ERA, 1.54 WHIP, and 48:17 K:BB in 20 outings (five starts) in 2020 and 2021 with the Pirates. Ponce will be one to watch in deep-mixed leagues and a sleeper for those in AL-only leagues.

Cody Ponce Exits Game With Right Arm Soreness

Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Cody Ponce left Saturday's contest with right arm soreness. He was only able to pitch 1 2/3 innings before exiting the game. Ponce allowed five runs on six hits and gave up three walks. There are no updates on the severity of the pitcher's potential injury. The 27-year-old has pitched in just three contests this season, producing 11.17 ERA.

Cody Ponce Will Start Tuesday Versus Cubs

Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Cody Ponce will draw the start against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday. This will be his first appearance with the team this year after posting a 3.15 ERA in a few outings last season. Ponce missed some time early in the season due to a forearm issue. He has only thrown 11 2/3 innings in Triple-A this season. It's unlikely that he pitches deep into Tuesday's game. The Cubs aren't exactly an easy lineup to get through, so there should be better streaming options on Tuesday.
