Mariners Won't Rush Colt Emerson's Development

Seattle Mariners shortstop prospect Colt Emerson signed a massive eight-year extension on Tuesday, but the team won't allow the new deal to rush his development. According to Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times, Emerson will remain in Triple-A for the time being. The Mariners will surely want Emerson and his new $95 million deal in the majors sometime this season, but for now, they will allow him to gain more development in the minors. After all, he's only 20 years old and has spent just nine games at Triple-A. We'd be surprised if he isn't called up by midseason, though, as he's 13-for-36 in Tacoma with three home runs and 11 RBI. He has shown that he can handle Triple-A pitching, and he also fared well against a higher caliber of arms in spring training, where he posted a .268/.340/.488 slash line, two home runs, eight RBI, and 111 wRC+. Emerson currently ranks as the #17 prospect to stash in RotoBaller's redraft fantasy baseball leagues for 2026.

Colt Emerson Signs an Eight-Year Extension with Mariners

The Seattle Mariners have signed shortstop prospect Colt Emerson to an eight-year, $50 million contract extension, according to Robert Murray of FanSided.com. The deal includes a club option for 2035, a full no-trade clause, and incentives that can increase the maximum value to more than $130 million. It's a bold move to extend a player who hasn't even reached the majors yet, but it falls in line with decisions we've seen from organizations across Major League Baseball. More and more, teams are starting to sign their prospects to extensions early in their career to buy out arbitration years. These deals benefit the player with guaranteed money for years to come, but also benefit the team by paying the player less than the maximum salary they could potentially get in arbitration. We're not surprised the Mariners wanted to lock up Emerson long-term, as he posted an impressive .285/.383/.458 slash line with 16 homers, 14 stolen bases, and 129 wRC+ in the minors last year. RotoBaller's Eric Cross recently ranked the shortstop as his #17 prospect to stash in redraft fantasy baseball leagues for 2026.

Colt Emerson Gets Reassigned to Minors Camp

Seattle Mariners infielder Colt Emerson has been reassigned to minor league camp on Saturday. It's not a huge surprise that Emerson won't make the Opening Day roster. The 20-year-old didn't have a great shot with Cole Young playing extremely well right now. Across 18 games, Emerson slashed .268/.340/.488 with two home runs and eight RBI during his time in Spring Training. The Mariners feel that the former first-round pick still needs some time to develop in the minor leagues. He earned a promotion to Triple-A Tacoma last season, so he figures to begin the year there. It wouldn't be shocking to see Emerson playing in Seattle at some point during the 2026 season.

Could Colt Emerson Make the Mariners' Opening Day Roster?

Seattle Mariners shortstop prospect Colt Emerson remains in camp with the team with just over a week until the regular season begins. It's a near certainty that Emerson will debut with the club in 2026, but it's trending toward being sooner rather than later. Ambuguity around the health of J.P Crawford's ailing shoulder could be factoring into why Emerson remains in camp. Although the Mariners have stated that the concern level is "very low" with Crawford, he last played in a Cactus League game on March 11 and is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Padres despite imaging coming back clean after visiting Dr. Keith Meister in Texas. Emerson is 9-for-36 (.250) in spring training, although four of those hits have come in his last three contests, with one of them being his lone home run of the spring. Crawford's shoulder is a situation to monitor because it could mean a spot on the Opening Day roster for Emerson, and if that is the case, the 20-year-old could quickly become fantasy-relevant, as he owns one of the best hit tools in the minors, and he also has plenty of speed and should grow into more power. Last season, the former first-rounder put together a .285-16-78-82-14 line in 130 games across three levels of the minor leagues. If he does not make the Opening Day roster, he's a top stash candidate in deeper leagues for whenever he does end up debuting.

Colt Emerson Heating Up at Spring Training

Seattle Mariners top prospect Colt Emerson has begun to find his footing in spring training and is making a strong case to crack the Opening Day roster. On Tuesday, Emerson went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run. In his next contest on Thursday, Emerson stayed hot at the dish, going 2-for-3 once again. He has now gone 4-for-11 through his first five contests this spring. Last summer, the 20-year-old spent most of his time at High-A and Double-A but did earn a short stint at Triple-A, which has opened the door for an early 2026 MLB debut. Across 124 games shared between High-A and Double-A, Emerson posted a .280/.380/.444 line with 14 long balls and 14 stolen bases. The No. 9-ranked prospect on MLB.com remains a top name to watch in camp as he would hold high-end sleeper value if he can earn a spot on the Opening Day roster.

Colt Emerson in Consideration to Break Camp with MLB Roster

Seattle Mariners top prospect Colt Emerson is in serious consideration to break camp with the MLB roster. According to Daniel Kramer of MLB.com, the team's President of Baseball Operations, Jerry Dipoto, noted that it's "not out of the question" that the top shortstop prospect begins the season in Seattle. According to MLB.com, Emerson, the former 22nd overall pick from the 2023 MLB Draft, is viewed as the team's No. 1-ranked prospect and the overall No. 9 prospect in the sport. Last summer, the 20-year-old spent most of his time with High-A and Double-A and performed at an elite level. With High-A, Emerson held a .281/.388/.453 line with 11 long balls and six stolen bases. Through 40 games shared between Double-A and Triple-A, Emerson posted a .293/.373/.470 line. He is a top name to watch in camp as he could be worthy of a late-round selection.

Colt Emerson to Begin the Year in the Minors?

MLB.com's Daniel Kramer writes that Seattle Mariners infield prospect Colt Emerson, who is MLB Pipeline's No. 9 overall prospect, "could still need seasoning by Opening Day." Emerson, 20, will be competing with fellow infield prospect Cole Young at second base in spring training, but Young is seen as the favorite after getting his first taste of the majors in a 77-game stint in 2025. Kramer believes that Young has as much upside as any position-player prospect in Seattle since outfielder Julio Rodriguez, but the recent acquisition of utility man Brendan Donovan should give the Mariners more time to let Emerson develop. Even if Emerson ends up on the Opening Day roster, Seattle is expected to avoid using him against tough left-handed pitchers. The former first-rounder reached Triple-A last year and hit an impressive .285/.383/.458 with 16 homers and 14 steals in 130 games over three minor-league levels. Emerson's power/speed upside makes him stash-worthy in 2026 fantasy leagues, even if he starts at Tacoma.

Colt Emerson Earns Ticket to MLB Spring Training

Seattle Mariners infield prospect Colt Emerson has earned an invite to big-league spring training. Emerson is currently viewed as the top prospect in the Seattle system on MLB.com and the No. 9-ranked overall prospect in the sport. Emerson joined the Mariners with the 22nd overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft out of John Glenn HS. Last summer, Emerson began the season with High-A Everett but finished it at Triple-A. Through 90 games at High-A, Emerson posted a .281/.388/.453 slash line with 16 doubles, 11 home runs, and six stolen bases. Through 40 games shared between Double-A and Triple-A, Emerson held a .293/.372/.470 line. Managers should closely monitor his progress during camp as he could be in the mix to crack the Opening Day roster.

Colt Emerson Nearing MLB Debut

Seattle Mariners top prospect Colt Emerson is a name to keep a close eye on during camp, as he could push for an early MLB debut in 2026. Last summer, the No. 9-ranked prospect in the sport according to MLB Pipeline began the season in High-A and finished the season with Triple-A Tacoma. With High-A, Emerson posted a .281/.388/.453 line with 16 doubles, 11 home runs, and six stolen bases. Through his first taste of Double-A, Emerson held a .282 AVG with a solid .790 OPS across a 34-game stint. Then, during his brief six-game taste of Triple-A, Emerson continued to play at a high level, hitting two home runs with a .364/.444/.727 line. While Emerson figures to earn a full stint at Triple-A to start 2026, he could debut in Seattle much earlier than expected if he can continue his current trajectory.

Colt Emerson Competing for an Opening Day Roster Spot in Seattle?

Adam Jude of the Seattle Times reports that "there is expected to be runway" for top Mariners infield prospect Colt Emerson to "win an opening-day job going into 2026." In 2025, Emerson played 90 games with High-A Everett, 34 games with Double-A Arkansas, and six games with Triple-A Tacoma. He slashed .285/.383/.458 with 16 home runs, 78 RBI, 82 runs scored, and 14 stolen bases in 600 plate appearances spread across the three levels. Emerson will not turn 21 years old until July 2026. He's a natural shortstop, but Jude speculates that Emerson's best path to a starting job in Seattle may be at third base. Eugenio Suarez served as Seattle's third baseman down the stretch of 2025, but he is now a free agent. Despite his limited experience at the highest levels of the Minors, it appears Emerson could crack the Mariners 2026 opening day roster if he performs in Spring Training.
