Cole Young is Emerging as Waiver-Wire Target

Seattle Mariners second baseman Cole Young is off to an impressive start to the 2026 season. Young got a taste of the MLB last year, but struggled to find much consistency at the plate. This season has gone much better for Young at this dish so far. Through 38 games, Young is slashing .276/.342/.403 with three home runs, 20 RBI, and 12 walks. Over the last two weeks, Young has collected 16 hits with nine RBI, which ranked him in the top 100 value over the span. Fantasy managers who are seeking a bat in deep leagues should consider adding Young. He does a little bit of everything, which can help fantasy managers in category formats.

Cole Young Emerging as a Breakout Second Baseman to Target on the Waiver Wire

After struggling to a .607 OPS across his first 257 MLB plate appearances in 2025, Seattle Mariners second baseman Cole Young appears to have turned a corner in his sophomore campaign. Across 149 plate appearances in 2026, the 22-year-old is hitting .276/.342/.403 with three home runs, 20 RBI, 20 runs scored, and two stolen bases. Young has raised his barrel rate from 5.6% to 8.1%, and his hard-hit rate from 31.3% to 41.4%. The lefty-swinging Young has also more than held his own against same-handed pitching, hitting .283/.306/.478 against southpaws. Young's batting average could be at risk of regression, as his strikeout rate is up from 18.3% in 2025 to 24.2% in 2026. He's also currently benefiting from an elevated.354 batting average on balls in play. Still, Young has taken over as the unquestioned everyday second baseman in Seattle and offers a well-rounded profile that makes him an appealing waiver wire target for fantasy managers.

Does Cole Young Have Breakout Potential After Impressive Spring?

Seattle Mariners second baseman Cole Young made his MLB debut in 2025, hitting .211/.302/.305 with four home runs, 24 RBI, 24 runs scored, and one stolen base across 257 plate appearances. While Young's numbers at the plate amounted to well below-average production, it's important to remember that 2025 was just his age-21 season. Entering 2026, Young projects as Seattle's everyday second baseman and should have a second chance to establish himself as an everyday big-leaguer. Young put together an impressive performance in the Cactus League this spring, hitting .281/.349/.667 with six home runs and three stolen bases across 63 plate appearances. While Young recorded just one steal in the majors in 2025, he showcased more speed in his minor league career with back-to-back 20-plus steal seasons in 2023 and 2024. If he can take a step forward across the board with another year of development in 2026, Young could be a sleeper second base option off the waiver wire for deep-league fantasy managers.

Cole Young Flashing Power in Spring Games

Seattle Mariners infielder Cole Young has begun to flash high-end power in spring training and appears to be the favorite to be the team's Opening Day second baseman. Across 15 spring games, Young has held a .273/.343/.614 slash line with four home runs and three stolen bases. Young is in competition with fellow young infielder Colt Emerson, who is considered the team's top-ranked prospect. While Young does have MLB experience, which gives him a slight edge, Emerson has also enjoyed a strong showing in camp. Last summer, Young made his MLB debut and held a .211/.302/.305 line with a low .607 OPS over a 77-game stint. While he only had four home runs and stole one base last season, Young appears to be taking the next step in his development in camp. If he earns the starting second base job, he is worth a late-round flyer in deeper formats as a middle infielder with upside.

Cole Young Appears to be the Favorite to Start at Second Base

MLB.com's Daniel Kramer writes that Seattle Mariners infield prospect Cole Young has the "leg up to make the team and would have to struggle mightily to lose his grip on the second-base job." The Mariners are "bullish" on the 22-year-old being their second baseman of the future now that Jorge Polanco is out of town. Young bats left-handed, and there's a likelihood that the Mariners avoid using him against the game's better left-handed pitchers. On those days, new utility man Brendan Donovan could shift to the keystone. Kramer has Young projected to hit eighth in Seattle's batting order against righties. The former 21st overall pick in 2022 struggled in his MLB debut in 2025, hitting .211/.302/.305 with a .607 OPS, four home runs, 24 RBI, and a 47:28 K:BB ratio in 77 games. There's not a ton of short-term upside for Young, and if he struggles, fellow infield prospect Colt Emerson could take playing time from him.

Cole Young Poised to Be Mariners' Second Baseman in 2026

Infielder Cole Young is expected to be the Seattle Mariners' primary second baseman in 2026, according to Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic. The report also effectively shuts down any possibility of a Ketel Marte trade. If Seattle does acquire infielder/outfielder Brendan Donovan, he would likely slot into the outfield or at third base rather than second. Young spent most of last season in Triple-A, where he hit .277/.392/.461 with five homers and four steals over 245 plate appearances. After getting the call to the big leagues, the 22-year-old didn't exactly light it up, posting an 80 wRC+ across 257 plate appearances. Even so, the M's still appear ready to commit to their former first-round pick out of Pennsylvania. From a fantasy standpoint, Young is basically free right now with an ADP around 700.8, though that figure will almost certainly rise as draft season moves along. For now, the left-handed hitter is mainly a 15-team middle infield option, but he's a name to keep on your radar heading into 2026.

Cole Young Extends Hitting Streak to Five Games

Seattle Mariners infield prospect Cole Young went 2-for-4 with a home run during their victory over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday afternoon. Young would hit his second MLB long ball in the final frame off Detroit reliever Tommy Kahnle. During this five-game hitting streak, the former 21st overall pick has begun to find his footing in the big leagues. He has held a .389/.476/.778 slash line with a double and two home runs. Before this surge, the No. 3-ranked prospect in the Seattle system held a modest .230/.271/.270 slash line with four doubles and a 25:4 K:BB. Earlier in the season, Young spent 54 games with Triple-A Tacoma and posted a solid .277/.392/.461 line with 13 doubles, five home runs, and four stolen bases before moving up to Seattle. For now, he is worth a look in deeper formats as a middle infielder with upside.

Mariners to Promote Cole Young to Major Leagues

The Seattle Mariners are expected to promote top infield prospect Cole Young to the major leagues. Young is currently considered the No. 43-ranked prospect in the sport and the No. 3-ranked in the system. Young has spent the first two months of the season with Triple-A Tacoma. Through his first 54 games at that level, Young has held his own, posting a .277/.392/.461 slash line with 13 doubles, five triples, five home runs, and four stolen bases. He has held a 28:31 K:BB and tallied 39 runs with 26 RBI. Last summer, Young spent his entire season with Double-A and posted a .271/.369/.390 line. Fantasy managers should expect the former 21st overall pick to spend most of his time at the keystone, with J.P. Crawford viewed as the everyday shortstop. Given his production at Triple-A this season, Young is worth adding in all standard formats.

Cole Young Hits Two Doubles, Swipes a Bag on Wednesday

Seattle Mariners infield prospect Cole Young went 5-for-6 with two doubles, two RBI, and a stolen base during their contest against Triple-A Salt Lake. This was Young's third-straight game tallying at least one hit. Over his last 13 contests, the No. 3-ranked prospect in Seattle has only gone hitless once and held a strong .393/.469/.732 slash line with six doubles, two triples, three home runs, and three swiped bags. Through 52 total games at Triple-A this season, Young has looked quite comfortable, posting a .277/.384/.465 line with five home runs and four stolen bases. Fantasy managers should continue to closely monitor Young's development as he could push for his MLB debut in the coming weeks. If he continues to perform at this level, he would be a viable stash candidate in deeper formats.

Cole Young Homers, Collects Three RBI on Sunday

Seattle Mariners infield prospect Cole Young went 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBI, and a stolen base on Sunday for Triple-A Tacoma. The former first-round draft pick has caught fire in May, hitting .385 with a 1.222 OPS since May 3, including seven doubles, three triples, and five home runs in 20 games. All three stolen bases he's tallied for the year came in this stretch as well. Carrying a .260/.372/.443 so far in 2025, the 21-year-old also possesses a keen eye at the plate to go along with strong contact skills, registering an impressive 26:27 BB:K through 226 plate appearances. The Mariners' third-ranked prospect is making a formidable case for a call-up to the majors, which could come as soon as sometime in June. The left-handed hitter is eligible at both 2B and SS on Yahoo!, and is one of the top priority prospect stashes in very deep and AL-only leagues.
