MLB.com's Michael Avallone writes that Seattle Mariners shortstop/second baseman Cole Young will likely begin the 2025 season at Triple-A Tacoma. The team's first-round pick in 2022 took a step back from his breakout season in 2023 but did spend the entire season at Double-A Arkansas at just 21 years old in 2024. He slashed .271/.369/.390 with nine home runs, 57 RBI, 23 stolen bases and 67 runs in 124 games played. MLB Pipeline's No. 49-ranked prospect is still very young, and the Mariners give him some more time to develop on the farm. Jonathan Mayo gives him a 20 percent chance to break camp with the big-league squad out of spring training this year. Young profiles to be an average/on-base middle-infielder at the next level over a power performer. He made contact 81.4% of the time but only posted a 22.0% hard-hit rate last year.
Seattle Mariners middle infield prospect Cole Young has been an on-base machine with Double-A Arkansas. Though his power has fluctuated, he's consistently gotten hits and drawn walks. Through 68 games, he's slashing .265/.359/.394 with 13 doubles, seven home runs, 13 stolen bases, and a 38:47 BB/SO ratio. A left-handed hitter, he's performed much better against right-handed pitching. In 254 plate appearances, he's slashing .273/.364/.421 with 11 doubles, five homers, and a 32:34 BB/SO against righties. Seattle's No. 1 prospect (per MLB.com), Young is expected to make his MLB debut sometime next year.
Seattle Mariners shortstop prospect Cole Young has begun to find his footing at Double-A this month after getting out to a slow start in April. Since May 1, the top prospect in Seattle is riding a strong .283/.368/.483 slash line with three home runs, three stolen bases, and a 7:10 K:BB ratio. In April, he hit for a poor .235 AVG with zero home runs. The 20-year-old spent all of the last season with Single and High-A and posted an overall .277/.399/.448 line and should be expected to continue to progress through the Seattle system fairly quickly. The former first-round selection is projected to reach the majors in 2025 but is worth stashing in dynasty leagues as he should finish the season with Triple-A Tacoma.
Seattle Mariners shortstop prospect Cole Young launched his first Double-A home run with a grand slam on Friday evening. After hitting 11 long balls across Single and High-A last summer, it took Young 23 games to tally his first in Double-A this season. The 20-year-old has a .245/.336/.337 stat line with six stolen bases in his first month of Double-A games. Young opened the campaign with an impressive nine-game hitting streak but then tallied just five hits in his next nine games. The top prospect in the Seattle system seems to have bounced back lately, not just in power production but also in knocking six hits in his past three games. MLB Pipeline projects Young to reach the majors in 2025, but he could make a push for a late-season promotion and is well worth holding onto in dynasty leagues.
Seattle Mariners infielder Cole Young and catcher Harry Ford headline the team's non-roster invites to major-league spring training this year. Young is the team's top prospect, per MLB Pipeline, but he won't make the Opening Day roster and isn't expected to debut in the majors in 2024. Despite being only 19 years old, he drew praise from scouts for his strike-zone awareness, plate discipline and batted-ball ability in his first professional season in 2023. Ford, ranked as the team's No. 2 prospect, hit .257/.410/.430 with 15 homers, 67 RBI and 24 steals in 118 games for High-A Everett last year, is expected to begin 2024 with Double-A Arkansas. He's exclusively been a catcher since being taken in the first round in 2021, but he's expected to start seeing action elsewhere this season, likely as early as spring training.
Seattle Mariners shortstop prospect Cole Young was promoted to High-A Everett on Friday. The 2022 first-round draft pick posted a .267/.396/.429 slash line with five home runs and 17 stolen bases across 78 appearances with Single-A Modesto. Young is the No. 57 prospect in baseball and the second-ranked prospect in the Mariners system, per MLB Pipeline. He possesses a 60-grade hit tool, and Seattle anticipates growth with his power numbers. The 19-year-old still has plenty of development to navigate before breaking through to the majors, but this promotion is a move in the right direction. He will be a name for fantasy managers to track as Young continues his ascension of the minor leagues over the next year or two.
Seattle Mariners shortstop prospect Cole Young produced his fifth home run of the campaign on Wednesday. The 2022 first-round draft pick is now slashing .269/.402/.431 with 16 stolen bases through 75 games in Single-A Modesto this season, building off the .960 OPS he posted in 10 appearances with Modesto last season. At only 19 years old, Young is the second-ranked prospect in the Mariners' system, per MLB Pipeline. He projects to be two or three years away from breaking through to the majors, though a 60-grade hit tool and lacking middle infield depth at the major-league level could land him a debut sooner than expected. There's nothing actionable for fantasy managers now, but Young could eventually find himself on a fast track, especially if his power output continues to progress.
