Andrés Muñoz News
Seattle Mariners closer Andres Munoz made his spring debut on Thursday in a 6-5 Cactus League loss to the Chicago White Sox. The righty pitched one inning, needing just eight pitches to get through it. He got Peyton Burdick to pop out on the first pitch he saw and struck out both Brett Phillips and Yoan Moncada on three pitches each. The only blemish was a Nicky Lopez double sandwiched between the Phillips and Moncada Ks. Munoz filled in admirably last season as the M's closer after Paul Sewald was traded away. With Matt Brash succumbing to injury, possibly for the season, there's no competition for the closer role, so Munoz will be the guy. He's got the characteristics you want in a closer: 99th percentile Whiff%, 95th percentile K%, along with a 98th percentile Fastball Velo that averages around 99 mph and can touch nearly 102 mph. He's projected for 26 saves in 2024 and is a top-12 option at the position.
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Andres Munoz (hip) was used out of the bullpen on Monday night in the extra-inning loss to the Los Angeles Angels and threw a scoreless inning while allowing two hits and striking out one batter. Munoz dealt with hip tightness over the weekend but returned to action to begin the week and should be able to avoid a trip to the injured list. The 24-year-old right-hander remains very valuable in fantasy leagues down the stretch as one of the team's primary options for saves. Munoz has been solid in his late-inning bullpen role this year, posting a 2.95 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, 60 strikeouts, 12 saves and 13 holds in 42 2/3 innings of work.
Seattle Mariners closer Andres Munoz was charged with his seventh loss of the season in Tuesday's 7-6 game against the Reds. Munoz came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth inning with the game tied 6-6. He allowed a leadoff single to Elly De La Cruz, who stole second before scoring the winning run on a walk-off single. Munoz has pitched well overall this season, converting 11 of 14 save opportunities with a 2.95 ERA, a 12.48 K/9 rate, and a 4.31 BB/9 rate. While he does tend to put too many runners on for free, Munoz should continue to see opportunities for the Mariners down the stretch. It is worth noting that Matt Brash may eat into those opportunities should Munoz continue to falter.

Seattle Mariners closer Andres Munoz entered 2023 with a ton of hype as a Statcast darling and one of fantasy's top sleepers among relief pitchers. But a right deltoid strain in early April would dump cold water all over the 25-year-old's breakout prospects, costing him two months of action and letting Paul Sewald run away with Seattle's closing job. With Sewald out of the picture via trade during the second half, however, Munoz began racking up some saves later in the year after the Mariners made him work out of the seventh and eighth innings quite a bit to perhaps groom him for the role. Collecting the bulk of his saves (12) in 30 appearances from July 26 to Sep. 30, Munoz totaled a 2.94 ERA (2.70 FIP) and 67:22 K:BB over 40 innings in 2023. There's not much Munoz did wrong last year, according to Statcast, with a 10.4% walk rate signifying his most glaring flaw. After the M's made no notable additions to augment their bullpen this offseason, the flame-throwing right-hander has a clearer path to seizing the ninth-inning mantle for 2024. With an affordable fantasy ADP and some of the best swing-and-miss stuff in the entire game (39.4% whiff rate), Munoz deserves to be a popular choice once again as a top-12 option among relievers for any rosters searching for saves in the early-double-digit rounds, but he'll need to overcome former top prospect Matt Brash for the lion's share of the save opportunities.
