Dalton Rushing has UCL Tear, Unlikely to Catch Again This Year

Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Dalton Rushing (elbow) was diagnosed with a "slight" tear in the UCL of his right elbow, and manager Dave Roberts said on Wednesday morning that he'd guess there is a "very small" chance that Rushing catches again this year, according to Jack Harris of The California Post. However, the Dodgers are hoping he can remain a left-handed-hitting option down the stretch. The 25-year-old backstop was scratched from the starting lineup on Sunday against the Boston Red Sox and landed on the 10-day injured list on Monday. With Shohei Ohtani locked in as the Dodgers' regular designated hitter, it's unlikely that Rushing will make any starts as a hitter down the stretch or in the postseason, so he's an easy drop candidate in single-year fantasy leagues. The former second-rounder in 2022 from the University of Louisville has hit .253/.335/.475 this year with 12 homers, 36 RBI, and 37 runs scored across 217 at-bats. With Will Smith (neck) still out as well, the Dodgers are currently using Ben Rortvedt and the recently acquired Hunter Feduccia behind the plate.

Dalton Rushing Is a Strong Two-Catcher Addition With an Everyday Role

Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Dalton Rushing snapped a nine-game hitless stretch Wednesday, July 22, with a 438-foot homer and a two-run double in a 9-5 win over Philadelphia. He finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, giving him a .247 average, 11 home runs, 33 RBI, and 32 runs across 194 at-bats. It was his fifth game this season with at least three RBI. The hot and cold stretches are real, but so is the opportunity. Will Smith (neck) is not expected back before mid-August, leaving Rushing in the starting role for the foreseeable future. Yahoo managers have rostered him in only 17% of leagues despite the power he brings at a thin position. RotoBaller lists Rushing in the 15-team range. He is not an automatic add in every one-catcher league, but the regular at-bats and 11-homer pop make him a strong pickup in deeper and two-catcher formats.

Dalton Rushing Worth Rostering for Catcher Power in Deep Leagues?

Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Dalton Rushing hit the All-Star break at .254/.337/.475 with 10 home runs, 30 runs, and 30 RBI in 181 at-bats. That is useful power at a thin position, especially with Rushing still available in 81% of Yahoo leagues. Will Smith (neck inflammation) is not expected back until late July or early August, leaving Rushing with more runway behind the plate. The home runs have support. Rushing owns an 11.6% barrel rate and 43.4% hard-hit rate, and his .255 expected average nearly matches the real number. He has also cut his strikeout rate from 37.4% last year to 25.9%. Smith will take back the primary job once healthy, so this is not a standard one-catcher add. RotoBaller ranks Rushing 91st for Week 16 and recommends him in 15-team leagues. That works. He also belongs in two-catcher formats, where 10-homer pop is hard to leave sitting around.

Dalton Rushing Returns on Wednesday, Worth a Waiver-Wire Pickup?

Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Dalton Rushing (head) is back behind the plate to catch right-hander Shohei Ohtani and will bat eighth on Wednesday on the road against the hosting Minnesota Twins and right-hander Joe Ryan, per MLB.com. The Dodgers pulled Rushing from Monday's game early in Minnesota after he was hit in the catcher's mask by a foul tip, and he was held out of Tuesday's contest against the Twins as a precaution. Rushing cleared the league's protocol, though, and is now back in action with Will Smith (neck) still on the 10-day injured list. The 25-year-old former second-round pick in the 2022 MLB draft out of the University of Louisville has generated some short-term waiver-wire appeal in fantasy leagues with Smith's injury taking longer than expected to heal. Rushing is hitting .252/.340/.481 with an .821 OPS, eight homers, 22 RBI, and 21 runs scored in 135 at-bats in his first full season in the big leagues, although he's gone 4-for-30 (.133) with three doubles, one RBI, two runs, four walks, and 10 K's in his last 10 games played.

Dalton Rushing Exits Early on Monday with Possible Concussion

Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Dalton Rushing (head) exited early from his team's game against the Minnesota Twins on Monday to "rule out a concussion," per an announcement from the team. The 25-year-old took a foul tip off his face mask in the first inning of the game. Entering play on Monday, Rushing was hitting .254/.342/.485 with eight home runs, 22 RBI, and 21 runs scored. With star Dodgers catcher Will Smith (neck) on the injured list with neck inflammation, Rushing has gotten his first chance to earn everyday playing time at the big-league level in June. If Rushing is now forced to miss time, Dodgers catcher Chuckie Robinson would likely see the majority of the playing time behind the plate for Los Angeles.

Dalton Rushing Worth Stashing Off the Waiver Wire?

Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Dalton Rushing remains blocked off from everyday playing time by the presence of star Dodgers backstop Will Smith. However, Rushing may be on the verge of forcing the Dodgers to manufacture more playing time for him. Across 44 plate appearances this season, the 25-year-old is hitting .385/.455/.974 with seven home runs, 16 RBI, and 11 runs scored. After posting a strong 14% barrel rate across 155 plate appearances in 2025, Rushing has elevated even further to a 17.9% barrel rate in 2026. With Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman locked in at designated hitter and first base for Los Angeles, Rushing does not have an obvious pathway to cracking his team's starting lineup. Still, the Dodgers can only ignore Rushing's ridiculous production for so long. Fantasy managers may want to consider stashing Rushing now, before an injury or lineup change causes his value to skyrocket.

Dalton Rushing Worth an Add Despite Shaky Playing Time?

Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Dalton Rushing is the backup to All-Star catcher Will Smith, but he might be worth a pickup off the waiver wire after his two-homer performance in the team's 12-3 win over the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field on Monday night. Rushing went 2-for-5 on the night with three RBI and two strikeouts while batting out of the nine-hole. He got the start at first base for the Dodgers with Freddie Freeman (personal) still away from the team while on the paternity list. The 25-year-old former second-rounder in 2022 out of Louisville only has 27 at-bats so far on the season, but he's recorded 12 hits (seven home runs) and has driven in 13 and scored 10 runs for the Blue. In 53 games in 2025 in his rookie season in the majors, Rushing slashed .204/.258/.324 with four homers and 24 RBI in his 155 plate appearances. He's currently rostered in only 17% of Yahoo leagues, but that number could continue to climb in the coming days and weeks if Rushing gets more at-bats and continues to produce at the plate.

Dalton Rushing Smacks Two Homers in Rout of Blue Jays

Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Dalton Rushing helped the Dodgers dismantle the hosting Toronto Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre on Monday by a score of 14-2 in Monday's series opener. Rushing went 4-for-4 at the plate with two solo home runs and three runs scored out of the eight-hole. The 25-year-old backstop was only playing in his third game of the 2026 season, going 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI in his first two games played. The former second-rounder in 2022 out of Louisville made his major-league debut in 2025 and hit just .204/.258/.324 with four home runs and 24 RBI in 53 games played. Rushing is already one homer shy of matching his career high, but his fantasy upside in single-year formats remains low as the backup to All-Star Will Smith, who should be back in the starting lineup for the second game of the series in Canada on Tuesday.

Dalton Rushing Smacks a Double in His Rehab Assignment Thursday

Los Angeles Dodgers rookie catcher Dalton Rushing (lower leg) began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Thursday and went 1-for-4 with a double and caught all nine innings, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports. Rushing has been sidelined since September 6, but it appears to be a short stint, as he was able to play the whole game on Thursday. It seems he has a strong chance to be activated after a minimum stay on the injured list. Rushing has gotten his opportunities in the big leagues, slashing .194/.254/.298 with three home runs, 21 RBI, and 12 runs scored through 121 at-bats. While it appears likely the Dodgers will call him back up before the season's end, fantasy managers competing in the playoffs of their leagues will want to look elsewhere for catcher production. Rushing remains a strong dynasty stash.

Dalton Rushing Heads to Injured List

Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Dalton Rushing (shin) was placed on the 10-day injured list on Saturday. Rushing was forced to make an early exit from Friday's contest after fouling a ball off his leg. Luckily, the CT scan didn't reveal any fractures, so Rushing won't require surgery. However, Rushing will miss time due to a bruised left shin. The Dodgers are shorthanded behind the plate with Will Smith (hand) also sidelined. In a corresponding move, Chuckie Robinson has been recalled to give the Dodgers some depth behind the plate. Robinson and Ben Rortvedt figure to split up the time behind the plate for now.
