Edwin Diaz Throws Bullpen Session on Sunday

Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Edwin Diaz (elbow) threw a live bullpen session before Sunday's game against the San Diego Padres. Diaz said afterwards that he felt better than he did earlier in the season. Diaz has been sidelined since he underwent surgery in April to remove loose bodies from his elbow. He remains on the 60-day Injured List, but Diaz believes he'll be able to rejoin the Dodgers bullpen shortly after the All-Star break. The assumption is that Diaz will resume the full-time closer role once he's back with the team. Fantasy managers who need bullpen help down the stretch of the season should stash Diaz now.

Edwin Diaz Throwing Off a Mound, Progressing Well

Los Angeles Dodgers right-handed closer Edwin Diaz (elbow) is throwing off a bullpen mound at Dodger Stadium on Friday before the series opener against the Baltimore Orioles, according to Jack Harris of The California Post. It's a good sign for the state of his recovery, and manager Dave Roberts said Diaz has been progressing well from surgery to remove loose bodies from his right elbow in April. Diaz has been on the injured list since April 20 and won't return to the Dodgers' bullpen until well into the second half of the season. The 32-year-old Puerto Rican hurler and three-time All-Star got off to a rough start to his Dodgers' tenure by allowing seven earned runs on nine hits (one homer) while walking five and striking out 10 in his first six innings before landing on the shelf. Diaz also picked up four saves. Despite his disappointing 2026 campaign to this point, fantasy managers should keep him stashed in most redraft formats, as he'll be the unquestioned closer for the best team in baseball whenever he returns. Since Diaz went down, left-hander Tanner Scott has been Roberts' preferred closing option in the ninth inning, and he's having a bounce-back season.

Edwin Diaz to Throw a Bullpen Session This Week

Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Edwin Diaz (elbow) is "coming along really well" and is scheduled to throw a bullpen session this week, manager Dave Roberts told The California Post's Jack Harris. Diaz is still eyeing a post-All-Star break return, but the Dodgers are encouraged with his progress. The hard-throwing reliever last appeared in a game for L.A. on April 19 against the Colorado Rockies before having surgery to remove loose bodies in his right elbow. "He's been playing catch, he should be throwing a bullpen here this week," Roberts added. The 32-year-old Puerto Rican veteran got off to a rough start in his first year with the Dodgers before needing elbow surgery, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits with five walks, 10 strikeouts, and four saves in six innings pitched over just four appearances. Diaz's fantasy stock for the rest of the year has obviously taken a big hit due to his elbow injury -- he's now rostered in only 78% of Yahoo leagues -- but he deserves to be stashed in most fantasy leagues while he recovers. Diaz is a three-time All-Star who has 257 career saves and the potential to be a high-end closer for fantasy managers to close out the 2026 season. Until he returns, left-hander Tanner Scott figures to continue seeing most of the save chances in L.A.

Edwin Diaz Set to Begin Throwing Progression

Los Angeles Dodgers closer Edwin Diaz (elbow) is expected to begin a throwing progression on either Monday or Tuesday, per Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. Diaz has been on the 60-day injured list since late April after undergoing surgery to remove loose bodies in his pitching elbow. The 32-year-old is not expected to return to the big leagues until mid-July and will likely need a fairly extensive rehab stint to build himself back up. Still, Diaz appears to be making progress towards a return to full health in 2026. Diaz struggled in a small sample size before getting injured earlier this season, posting a 10.50 ERA and 2.33 WHIP across six innings (seven appearances). However, he's recorded 116 saves since the start of the 2021 season and profiles as a must-start fantasy closer when healthy.

Edwin Diaz Tied to Illegal Cockfighting

Los Angeles Dodgers right-handed closer Edwin Diaz (elbow), a three-time All-Star, is linked to cockfighting events in Puerto Rico, according to Josh Peter of USA Today Sports. Diaz is pictured in a Dodgers uniform in a Facebook post dated Feb. 2 and a post dated Feb. 4 advertising cockfighting tournaments. Text in one of the ads, translated into English, reads, "The Puerto Rico Cockfighting Club invites all enthusiasts to a special match and a grand tribute to one of our island's greatest sources of pride: A Tribute to the Puerto Rican Star and Cockfighter Edwin 'Sugar' D az." The maximum penalty for participants in a cockfight is five years in prison and a fine, and the maximum penalty for a spectator is one year in prison and a fine. The 32-year-old veteran, who is currently on the 60-day injured list after having surgery on April 22 to remove loose bodies from his right elbow, could be facing significant punishment from MLB. Stay tuned.

Edwin Diaz Feels Good, "100 Percent Confident" he'll be Full Strength in Second Half

Los Angeles Dodgers right-handed closer Edwin Diaz (elbow), who is on the 15-day injured list after having surgery to remove loose bodies from his right elbow, said that he feels "really good" and is "100% confident" that he will be back to full strength for the second half of the 2026 season, according to Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register. Diaz won't start a throwing program until after his stitches are removed in a couple of weeks. His injury was a disappointment for the organization after they signed Diaz to a three-year, $69 million contract in the offseason, the highest average annual value ever given to a reliever. The 32-year-old reliever needs to be stashed in all fantasy formats for the rest of the first half of the year, as Diaz could be a difference-maker down the stretch for a Dodgers team looking to win their third straight World Series championship. In the meantime, the Dodgers will continue to go with a committee approach in the ninth inning, which includes lefties Tanner Scott and Alex Vesia, and right-hander Blake Treinen.

Dodgers Not Naming Primary Closer With Edwin Diaz Injured

The Los Angeles Dodgers placed star closer Edwin Diaz (elbow) on the 15-day injured list on Monday, and he's expected to miss around three months after he has surgery on his right elbow to remove loose bodies. Manager Dave Roberts declined to name a set closer in Diaz's absence, according to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. It helps explain why the 32-year-old All-Star's velocity has been down early in his first year in L.A. Diaz appeared in Sunday's loss to the Rockies for the first time since April 10, and he allowed three earned runs without even recording an out. After complaining of right-elbow issues after the game, the Dodgers sent him for an MRI exam, which revealed the loose bodies in his arm. Fantasy managers need to keep Diaz stashed everywhere for a second-half run. In the meantime, left-hander Tanner Scott is likely to get the first crack at save chances for the Dodgers, despite his rough 2025 campaign. In addition to Scott, lefty Alex Vesia and righty Blake Treinen could mix in to form a closer-by-committee situation.

Edwin Diaz Expected to Miss Around Three Months

Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Dodgers right-handed closer Edwin Diaz (elbow) will have surgery to remove loose bodies from his right elbow, a source told Alden Gonzalez of ESPN. Diaz is expected to miss in the neighborhood of three months. The Dodgers officially placed the 32-year-old veteran on the 15-day injured list on Monday after Diaz appeared on Sunday against the Colorado Rockies for the first time since April 10. He proceeded to allow three runs and a walk without recording an out while also seeing his velocity dip again. Now we know why. Barring a setback after he goes under the knife, Diaz won't return to the Dodgers' bullpen until late June or early July. Despite the injury, the All-Star closer should be stashed in all fantasy baseball leagues while he recovers. In the meantime, lefties Tanner Scott and Alex Vesia and righty Blake Treinen could all mix and match for save opportunities in L.A. Although Scott struggled for the team in 2025, he had a career-high 23 saves and has locked down 78 games in his nine-plus-year career.

Edwin Diaz Placed on 15-Day Injured List with Elbow Injury

The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed closer Edwin Diaz (elbow) on the 15-day injured list with loose bodies in his right elbow. In a corresponding move, the Dodgers are promoting Jake Eder from Oklahoma City. Diaz was dealing with velocity concerns over the past two weeks and will now miss at least the next 15 days on the injured list. In his most recent outing on Sunday, Diaz failed to record an out as he surrendered three hits, three runs, and a walk to the Colorado Rockies. In this appearance, Diaz's fastball sat at 95.4 mph compared to the 97.3 mph it averaged last summer. While Diaz was enjoying a strong start to his Dodger career, earning four saves over his first five appearances with a 1.80 ERA, the right-hander is now in serious danger of missing extended time. While he remains sidelined, Alex Vesia and Tanner Scott figure to see the bulk of the save opportunities, with Vesia projected to operate as the lead option, given his recent usage.

Edwin Diaz Implodes in Brief Outing, Velocity Remains Serious Concern

Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Edwin Diaz continues to struggle thus far in 2026, following an outing on Sunday where he allowed three earned runs on three hits and walked one without recording a single out against the Colorado Rockies. His velocity remains down compared to last season (95.7 mph compared to 97.2 mph in 2025). In addition, his walk rate is up (15.2 percent compared to 8.7 percent in his career), and his strikeout rate is way down (30.3 percent compared to 39.7 percent in his career). Both of those marks would be career-worst for Diaz. On the season, Diaz has converted four of his five save opportunities, but owns a 10.50 ERA and 2.33 WHIP across seven appearances. Alex Vesia has converted both of his save opportunities, and if Diaz continues to stumble, they may turn to Vesia in the short term. It's still likely the Dodgers' long-term plans are to have Diaz close games, which is evident by his three-year, $69 million contract; however, fantasy managers have the right to be concerned about his performance, especially when most signs point towards the regression being understandable with the decrease in control and velocity.
