Kyle Hurt Earns Save Wednesday, Emerging as Deep-League Pickup?

Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Kyle Hurt picked up his first save of the season on Wednesday night against the Rockies. The 27-year-old righty came on in the ninth inning after Tanner Scott worked through the top of the order in the eighth. With a 4-1 lead, Hurt quickly retired the Rockies in order, getting back-to-back groundouts and then fanning Willi Castro to end the game. Hurt is 1-0 with an impressive 1.06 ERA and 2.36 FIP in his 17 innings this season, while racking up 20 strikeouts. He could be used more as a co-closer with the lefty Scott over the next several weeks while the Dodgers continue to wait for Edwin Diaz (elbow) to return from his long layoff. Hurt is a solid speculative add in deep leagues in case he gets more work, but in standard-sized leagues, he's hard to trust since the Dodgers will continue to rotate options at the end of games.

Kyle Hurt Being Viewed as Reliever

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Kyle Hurt isn't being considered for a starting rotation spot, according to Bill Plunkett. Manager Dave Roberts said on Monday that Hurt is competing for a bullpen spot. Hurt came into the league as a starting pitcher, but he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2024. He has been working as a reliever since then, and that'll probably be his easiest path to making it to the big league roster. The Dodgers already have a handful of pitchers competing for the final two spots in the starting rotation. Hurt only pitched in seven games at Triple-A Oklahoma City last season. The Dodgers will likely want to see more of him as a reliever at the minor league level before promoting him, but we'll see if he can impress them in camp.

Kyle Hurt Called Up To Make Starting Debut Against Nationals

The Los Angeles Dodgers called up pitching prospect Kyle Hurt from Triple-A Oklahoma for him to make the start against the visiting Washington Nationals on Tuesday in his big-league starting debut. Hurt, the club's No. 6 prospect per MLB Pipeline, is stretched out to around 45 pitches. Expect left-hander Ryan Yarbrough to follow Hurt in his MLB debut as the "bulk" reliever in LA's bullpen game on Tuesday. The 25-year-old right-hander has already thrown 4 2/3 relief innings in 2024 and has allowed two runs (one earned) while walking one and striking out six in 6 2/3 innings since making his MLB debut in 2023. Hurt is interesting in dynasty/keeper leagues, but fantasy managers in season-long leagues and in DFS should avoid him on Tuesday in his spot start. Hurt is likely to be sent right back to Triple-A after Tuesday's game or on Wednesday.

Dodgers Calling Up Kyle Hurt

The Los Angeles Dodgers are calling up right-handed pitching prospect Kyle Hurt, who has the highest strikeout rate (14.8 K/9) in the minors this year, according to sources. Hurt has a devastating fastball and gets a lot of swings and misses on his secondary pitches to produce 145 strikeouts in 88 1/3 innings over 25 appearances (16 starts) for Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City. The team's No. 12 prosect, per MLB Pipeline, will work out of the bullpen at the major-league level. That will limit his fantasy appeal to very deep leagues for his strikeout ratios. The 25-year-old has some of the best stuff in the Dodgers' system and produces high spin rates with his secondary pitches.
