Diego Castillo News
The Minnesota Twins acquired Triple-A infielder Diego Castillo from the Baltimore Orioles on Friday in exchange for cash considerations. The Twins now have two Diego Castillos on the Triple-A St. Paul roster -- one a pitcher and one a position player. The 26-year-old Venezuelan will give the Twins some more infield depth in the minors with third baseman Royce Lewis (quadriceps) out at least a couple of months with a severe quad strain. Castillo can play some outfield as well but is likely to stick at St. Paul for now. The fact that he's been with six different teams this offseason tells you all you need to know. Castillo made his MLB debut in 2022 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and hit .206/.251/.382 with 11 homers and 29 RBI in 96 games but had just one trip to the plate in the majors in 2023 with Arizona.
The New York Mets claimed infielder Diego Castillo off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday. Castillo was dropped from Arizona's 40-man roster this offseason when the team re-signed Lourdes Gurriel Jr. He had just one plate appearance at the major-league level with the Snakes in 2023 after hitting .206 (54-for-262) with 11 home runs, 29 RBI and 28 runs scored in 96 games in his rookie year with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2022. The 26-year-old Venezuelan infielder hit an impressive .313 (142-for-454) at Triple-A Reno, adding only three home runs, 72 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 124 games. Castillo will mostly likely open the 2024 season at Triple-A Syracuse as infield depth for the Mets.
Seattle Mariners pitcher Diego Castillo struck out the side over a scoreless inning to earn the save during Wednesday's 6-3 win over the Houston Astros. He entered the ninth inning to protect a three-run lead. The 28-year-old has now notched back-to-back saves over his last two appearances. He's been efficient as of late, tossing eighth consecutive scoreless innings. The right-hander owns a 5.57 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, and 28 strikeouts over 21 innings. Castillo has recently split closing duties with Paul Sewald and is worth rostering in most league formats for fantasy managers searching for saves.
