Ed Howard Fantasy Stats

Chicago Cubs infield prospect Ed Howard was promoted to Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday. The former first-round draft pick has dealt with injuries since coming into the minor league system in 2021, much of which centered around a hip injury in 2022 that required surgery, which has derailed his progress. This year, the 23-year-old played two games at High-A and 15 more at Double-A prior to his promotion to Triple-A this week. Including a 1-for-4 game for Iowa on Tuesday, the right-handed hitter is just 6-for-61 (.098) in 2025. He'll use the remainder of the 2025 season and the Arizona Fall League to recoup some at-bats, and it will allow the Cubs to see if he's going to be a part of their future, a player who once ranked as the club's No. 5 prospect back in 2021.

Since May 26, Howard has hit an astounding .415 with an impressive .974 OPS for High-A South Bend. Overall in 43 games, Howard has hit .245 with 10 RBI and six stolen bases. Injuries have derailed Howard off many Cubs top prospect lists, but he is still 22 years old and is three games away from playing in the most games he has played in since his rookie season. Long term, Howard provides great defense but will still need to improve his offense to have an impact in the fantasy community. It's a nice story to see him healthy after some tough luck, but Howard is best suited on the waiver wire in dynasty leagues.

Howard, 21, was the Cubs first-round pick in 2020, but his early career has been mired with several injuries thus far. Howard's return this time was from hip surgery that ended his 2022 campaign in May. Despite his injury history stunting his development early on, Howard appears to have fully recovered and will get plenty of time on the field for South Bend. Howard's always has had strong defensive skills, but it has been his bat that has needed development to take the next step. For now, he is nothing more than a name to file away in the deepest of dynasty leagues.
