Gregory Soto Locks Down Fifth Save, Remains Priority Option on the Waiver Wire

Pittsburgh Pirates left-hander Gregory Soto recorded his fifth save of the season Sunday, tossing a scoreless inning in a win vs. the Toronto Blue Jays. Soto worked around one walk and one hit batter while striking out one during another effective ninth-inning appearance. The veteran reliever has now collected four saves across his last seven outings and continues to strengthen his grip on the Pirates' closer role. Soto owns a 2.22 ERA and a 0.82 WHIP through 24 innings this season while piling up 30 strikeouts. His 32.6 K percent ranks in the 95th percentile, highlighting the swing-and-miss ability that has fueled his success in late innings. Fantasy managers searching for saves should continue viewing Soto as one of the top waiver wire bullpen options available.

Gregory Soto a Must-Add Option When Looking for Saves

Despite allowing a run in his last outing (he still picked up the save), Pittsburgh Pirates left-handed reliever Gregory Soto is a must-add option in fantasy baseball leagues for those searching for saves. Before allowing a run in his inning of work while picking up the save against the Colorado Rockies on May 12, Soto had a stretch of 7 2/3 innings where he allowed no runs and just one hit while winning two games, earning two saves, and picking up a hold for the Bucs. The 31-year-old left-handed Dominican hurler is currently 3-0 in 2026 with a sharp 1.69 ERA (2.40 FIP) and 0.70 WHIP with 26 strikeouts, only seven walks, and four saves. The two-time All-Star hasn't been a high-end closing option since 2022 with the Detroit Tigers, when he had a career-high 30 saves in 60 1/3 innings, but he's trending up this year as Pittsburgh's top fireman. Soto has picked up saves in three of his last four outings, and he apparently has once again surpassed Dennis Santana as manager Don Kelly's preferred option in the ninth inning. He's currently rostered in less than half of Yahoo leagues.

Gregory Soto Earns Fourth Save, Set as Pittsburgh's Primary Closer?

Pittsburgh Pirates left-hander Gregory Soto picked up his fourth save of the season on Tuesday in his team's 3-1 win over the Colorado Rockies. Soto allowed two hits and an earned run, but managed to shut the door on the Rockies in the ninth. The 31-year-old is off to an excellent start to the 2026 season, as he's pitched to a 1.69 ERA and 0.71 WHIP with 26 strikeouts across 21 1/2 innings pitched. Soto has also earned saves in three out of his last four appearances and appears to be emerging as the primary closer in Pittsburgh after opening the season in a setup role. In any league where he's not already rostered, Soto profiles as a must-add closer for fantasy managers to target on the waiver wire.

Gregory Soto a Top Waiver-Wire Option for Saves?

Pittsburgh Pirates relief pitcher Gregory Soto is off to a terrific start on the mound this season, and he's getting onto the fantasy radar as he starts to rack up save opportunities. Soto has earned a save on back-to-back days, and each of his last three outings has either been a save or a win. Across 19 appearances (19.0 innings) this year, he owns a 1.42 ERA with 11.84 K/9, 3.32 BB/9, and 0.47 HR/9. The 31-year-old lefty also has three saves this season, tying his highest single-season mark since 2022, when he recorded 30. It seems like Soto is firmly established in the closer's role for now, so as long as the Pirates keep their winning percentage above .500, he'll have the potential to rack up saves in fantasy baseball. Rostered in just 28% of leagues, Soto represents an intriguing target for managers seeking a leverage bullpen arm on the waiver wire. He currently ranks #26 among relievers in RotoBaller's latest fantasy baseball rankings.

Gregory Soto Tallies Second Save for Pirates, Settling in as Closer to Roster?

Pittsburgh Pirates relief pitcher Gregory Soto secured his second save of the season on Wednesday night, pitching a scoreless ninth inning to complete a close, 1-0 win over the Diamondbacks. Soto combined with Paul Skenes on the shutout and worked around a walk to Geraldo Perdomo to lock down the win. The veteran lefty has allowed three runs in 18 innings this season, posting a 1.50 ERA, 2.53 FIP, and 0.72 WHIP. He has 24 strikeouts in his 18 frames this year, and he has six holds to go with his two saves. If he consistently gets the call in the ninth, he'll be a solid closer to roster, but he has been used earlier in games in high-leverage situations against lefties. He and Dennis Santana will continue to share the closer role, but Soto has been more effective and could start to get more of the timeshare if he continues to be so effective.

Gregory Soto Poised to Take Over Ninth-Inning Role for Pirates?

Pittsburgh Pirates relief pitcher Gregory Soto has enjoyed a strong stretch of results and is beginning to emerge as the primary late-inning option for the Pirates. While Dennis Santana appeared to be the favorite for saves after taking over the closer role in 2025, the right-hander has struggled in the early going of the campaign, which has opened the door for Soto. Since tallying a save on April 15, Santana has posted a rough 8.10 ERA with a 2.10 WHIP, two losses, and one blown save over his last 6 2/3 innings. During this same stretch, Soto has struck out eight hitters over 7 1/3 innings while carrying a much stronger 2.45 ERA with a 0.68 WHIP. Even though Soto has only tallied one save so far this season, his underlying 1.91 xERA and elite 36.5% K% suggest he is far more suited for this role. Managers looking to find a reliever with high-end strikeout upside should look to stash Soto before he earns the bulk of the save opportunities on a competitive Pirates team.

Gregory Soto Continues to be Part of a Closer-by-Committee Approach

Pittsburgh Pirates left-handed reliever Gregory Soto (2-0) has been excellent so far in 2026, making 14 appearances on the season with a 1.98 ERA and 0.80 WHIP with 20 strikeouts in 13 2/3 innings pitched. Under the hood, he has also been dominant (1.86 xERA and .137 xBA). Currently, he is splitting closing duties with right-hander Dennis Santana, who earned 16 saves last season. Although Soto's stuff and stats project better than Santana's, Santana is still throwing the ball well, with a 0.69 ERA and 0.85 WHIP; however, regression may catch up with Santana at some point, as he has a 3.52 xERA and is missing fewer bats (25.3 percent whiff rate to Soto's 31.1 percent). While Soto holds standalone value as things are now, he appears to be the higher upside reliever to roster amongst the two Pirate backend relievers, making him a must-add reliever in deeper formats.

Gregory Soto Falls into Eighth-Inning Role Again, Losing Value in Standard Leagues

Pittsburgh Pirates left-hander Gregory Soto worked a scoreless eighth inning with two strikeouts in his team's 2-0 win over the Washington Nationals on Wednesday. Pirates reliever Dennis Santana followed Soto in the ninth inning and picked up his second save of the season. While Soto also has a save in 2026, he has four holds and appears to be settling in to a setup role ahead of Santana. The 31-year-old's overall line is excellent, as he's recorded a 0.93 ERA and 0.72 WHIP with 15 strikeouts across 9 2/3 innings, so he could be in line to take over the ninth if Santana gets injured or struggles. Still, Soto's value in standard fantasy leagues is fading as the roles in Pittsburgh's bullpen start to become defined.

Gregory Soto Could Earn More Save Chances

Pittsburgh Pirates relief pitcher Gregory Soto was once again used in a set-up role during Saturday's game against the Chicago Cubs. Soto was called upon to get the final out of the seventh inning, which he did without any problems. Dennis Santana was handed the ball in the final frame, but struggled in this one. The right-hander gave up one hit, one run, and two walks, which led to his first blown save of the year. This rough outing could open up a door for Soto to get more save opportunities in Pittsburgh. Both pitchers have solid overall numbers, but the Pirates might ride the hot hand. Fantasy managers should keep an eye on Soto after Santana struggled to close the door on Saturday.

Gregory Soto Works in Setup Role

Pittsburgh Pirates relief pitcher Gregory Soto was tasked with pitching in the eighth inning of Friday's game against the Chicago Cubs. Normally, Soto is used in save situations, but was handed the ball with a two-run lead in the eighth inning here. Soto got into some trouble with two walks, but was able to escape the inning without any damage. Dennis Santana came on in the final frame and shut the door while recording two strikeouts. The expectation is that the two of them will continue to split up the closer role in Pittsburgh. Between the two pitchers, Santana is the better player to roster right now. Soto should continue getting work in the ninth inning, but could be on a short leash with how well Santana has been pitching to begin the season.
