Hagen Smith to Make Triple-A Debut

Chicago White Sox left-handed pitching prospect Hagen Smith will be starting the 2026 regular season with Triple-A Charlotte. Smith was in the mix to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster but will instead begin the campaign by making his Triple-A debut. Smith spent the entire 2025 campaign with Double-A Birmingham. Through 75 2/3 innings at this level, Smith held a 3.57 ERA with a 1.30 WHIP. The southpaw struck out an impressive 108 hitters but struggled to command his pitches, allowing a high 58 free passes. In 2024, Smith made his professional debut with High-A and tossed only 7 2/3 innings with a 7:2 K:BB. Given how quickly Smith has progressed through the minor leagues, the former fifth overall pick from the 2024 MLB Draft remains on track for an early promotion to the major leagues.

White Sox Reassign Hagen Smith to Minor-League Camp

The Chicago White Sox announced on Monday that they reassigned left-handed pitching prospect Hagen Smith to minor-league camp. Smith will begin the 2026 season at Triple-A Charlotte, but he figures to make his major-league debut with the Pale Hose at some point this year. The 22-year-old southpaw spent all of last year working at Double-A Birmingham, going 3-3 with a 3.57 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and 108:56 K:BB in 75 2/3 innings pitched over his 20 starts. The former fifth overall pick in 2024 out of the University of Arkansas was considered one of the highest-floor starting pitchers of his draft class, but his inability to throw strikes so far in the minors has been worrisome. Elbow soreness early last year also caused Smith to miss six weeks. The 6-foot-3, 235-pounder still has a dominant fastball/slider combination, but he's going to need to throw more strikes if he's going to be successful at the major-league level. Smith is strictly a dynasty/keeper-league stash for now.

Hagen Smith to Face Hitters on Tuesday

Chicago White Sox left-handed pitching prospect Hagen Smith (elbow) will face hitters in a live batting practice session on Tuesday for the first time this spring, according to Scott Merkin of MLB.com. Smith has another live batting practice session scheduled and then expects to get into some action in Cactus League games. The 22-year-old southpaw, who was the fifth overall pick in 2024 out of Arkansas, had a 3.57 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and 108:56 K:BB in 75 2/3 innings over 20 starts with Double-A Birmingham last year. He missed six weeks in the first half of 2025 due to elbow soreness, which is why the White Sox have slow-played him so far this spring. Questionable control has fantasy managers in dynasty/keeper leagues pumping the brakes a bit on Smith being a high-end starting pitcher at the next level, although if he can lower his walk rate in 2026, he should make his MLB debut. Smith is dominant with his fastball and slider, but a lack of a real third pitch may push him to a high-leverage relief role down the road.

Hagen Smith to Compete for Early Promotion to Triple-A?

Chicago White Sox left-handed pitching prospect Hagen Smith could push for an early-season ticket to Triple-A. Smith is currently ranked as the No. 5 prospect in the system and the No. 88 overall prospect on MLB.com. Smith made his professional debut in 2024 following the 2024 MLB Draft, where he was selected with the fifth overall pick out of Arkansas. During this brief 7 2/3-inning stint, Smith posted a 3.52 ERA with a 1.17 WHIP. In 2025, the southpaw spent his entire campaign with Double-A Birmingham. During this stint, Smith logged 75 2/3 innings to the tune of a 3.57 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. While he allowed a high 56 walks. He showed high-end strikeout potential, totaling 108. If Smith can improve his command in camp, he could be in the mix to join Triple-A early in 2026, opening the door for a second-half MLB debut.

Hagen Smith Walks Five in Latest Start at Double-A

Chicago White Sox pitching prospect Hagen Smith was tagged for four earned runs on four hits and five walks while striking out three in 3 2/3 innings of work for Double-A Birmingham on Sunday. It was the fifth time this season in 17 total starts that the southpaw walked at least four batters in an outing. Sometimes pitchers are working on new pitches, so it's hard to blame it all on his control, but the first half numbers looked far better than the second half. In his first eight starts (27 1/3 innings pitched), the lefty posted a 1.98 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and a 21.2 percent K-BB%, however, over the last nine starts (35 1/3 IP), he's recorded a 5.35 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, and an 11.8 percent K-BB%. Hopefully Chicago's fifth-ranked prospect can end the season on a high note, which would put him in a position to see Triple-A next season and potentially make his major league debut.

Hagen Smith Strikes Out Seven Over Five Innings

Chicago White Sox pitching prospect Hagen Smith allowed one run on two hits and two walks with seven strikeouts across five innings on Tuesday against Double-A Rocket City. The left-hander generated 16 swinging strikes for the outing and did well to limit damage and be more efficient. Before this start, Smith had allowed either two or three runs in every outing since July 4. It was one of his best overall performances of the year and brings his season numbers to a 3.51 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, and 84:40 K:BB in 59 innings. He dominant 2.10 ERA in the first half, but has dipped to a rockier 4.59 mark in the second. The 2024 fifth overall pick has still shown plenty of promise and should be viewed favorably for the time being.

Hagen Smith Wild, But Effective Over Five Innings

Chicago White Sox left-handed pitching prospect Hagen Smith picked up the win on Wednesday as he allowed two runs on four hits and five walks while striking out six across five innings against Double-A Chattanooga. The five walks were the second-highest in a start this season for the lefty, but he managed to limit the damage otherwise. His swing and miss stuff was on display despite his lack of control, with 18 swings and misses. It's been a solid season for the 2024 fifth overall pick, despite not moving quite as quickly through the White Sox system as some anticipated. The 21-year-old missed some time this year due to injury, and the walks have been a real concern. He holds a 3.60 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and a 75:37 K:BB ratio through 50 innings at Double-A. Managers in dynasty leagues should still have high hopes while also keeping a close eye on his development track.

Hagen Smith Activated Off Injured List, Strikes Out Three in Return

Chicago White Sox pitching prospect Hagen Smith (elbow) was activated from the 7-day IL on Saturday and made the start for Double-A Birmingham. The lefty was limited, though, facing just six batters in 1 2/3 innings, allowing no runs on one hit and one walk while striking out three. Chicago's third-ranked prospect had been out of action since May 10 after experiencing soreness in his pitching elbow. The fifth overall pick in last year's draft made seven starts at Double-A Birmingham earlier this season before the flare-up with his elbow, posting a 2.10 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and an elite 39.3 percent strikeout rate. The WHIP was on the high side due to an 18.7 percent walk rate, but assuming he can clean that up, some time at Triple-A later this year is possible. The 21-year-old could be making a fantasy impact as soon as next season, so dynasty and redraft managers alike should keep an eye on how he finishes the rest of the way.

Hagen Smith Set to Return on Saturday

Chicago White Sox pitching prospect Hagen Smith (elbow) is scheduled to return to the mound on Saturday, June 28. Chicago's third-ranked prospect has been out of action since May 10 after experiencing soreness in his pitching elbow. The fifth overall pick in last year's draft had made seven starts at Double-A Birmingham this season before the flare-up with his elbow, posting a 2.10 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and an astronomical 39.3 percent strikeout rate. With that type of strikeout rate, one might expect a lower WHIP, however, the 6-foot-3 southpaw struggled with command to the tune of an 18.7 percent walk rate in the first 25 2/3 IP in 2025. Assuming he can clean that up to a more palatable level, the lefty should be on his way to Triple-A Charlotte before the season is out, although the team has also previously indicated they will limit his workload the rest of the season to ensure his arm remains healthy. The 21-year-old could be making a fantasy impact as soon as next season, so dynasty and redraft managers alike should keep an eye on how he finishes the rest of the way.

Hagen Smith to Start on Saturday at Double-A

Chicago White Sox left-handed pitching prospect Hagen Smith (elbow) is expected to return to action this Saturday for the Double-A Birmingham Barons, his first game action since May 10, according to MLB.com's Scott Merkin. Smith, the team's No. 3 prospect per MLB Pipeline, has been sidelined with left-elbow soreness but is ready to return to game action this weekend. The 21-year-old former fifth overall pick last year out of Arkansas was 2-0 with a nice 2.10 ERA and 1.21 WHIP with 42 strikeouts and 20 walks in 25 2/3 innings at Birmingham over seven starts before his elbow injury. Smith has always had excellent stuff, but his command is what has gotten him in trouble, and it hasn't gone away with a 7.0 BB/9 so far in 2025. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound southpaw has a well above-average fastball and slider, but he probably won't be a candidate to make his MLB debut until at least 2026.
