Jack Wenninger Still a Stash Option After Rough Outing?

New York Mets pitching prospect Jack Wenninger could still be the next pitcher in line for a promotion when the team needs to fill a rotation spot despite turning in his worst outing of the season in his latest start. The Mets' fifth-ranked prospect carried a sterling 1.51 ERA into Sunday's start for Triple-A Syracuse, but yielded six runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out five in 5 1/3 innings pitched. Surprisingly, two of the hits were home runs after the right-hander had allowed just one home run all season in his first eight starts (35 2/3 IP). Still, the 6-foot-4 hurler owns a 2.20 ERA (4.38 FIP), is limiting opponents to a .178 average, and has recorded 44 strikeouts in 41 innings of work, which should be enough to give the organization confidence to call on him when needed. Jonah Tong appears to be getting the nod to fill Clay Holmes' spot in the rotation for now, but if he or Christian Scott falter or someone hits the injured list, Wenninger could be on the way to Queens. For managers looking for pitching help, the former sixth-round draft pick is a worthwhile stash for his ability to limit damage and record a strikeout per inning.

Jack Wenninger Worth Stashing Ahead of Potential MLB Debut?

New York Mets pitching prospect Jack Wenninger could be next in line the next time the team needs to fill a rotation spot. The organization went with Zach Thornton on Wednesday to fill the void left by the injury to Clay Holmes (fibula), with the southpaw lasting just 4 1/3 innings after piling up 80 pitches, allowing four earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three in the outing. Wenninger has been impressive at limiting damage at Triple-A, allowing just one home run in eight starts and stranding 87.7 percent of runners, leading to a 1.51 ERA. However, the right-hander owns a gaudy 14.6 percent walk rate (11.3 percent K-BB%), has hit four batters, and a 3.88 FIP suggests the results have been better than expected. Still, averaging more than a strikeout per inning (9.84 K/9) gets our attention in fantasy, and if he can find similar success in the majors, then the 24-year-old would be a viable fantasy asset. View the 6-foot-4 hurler as one of the top pitching prospects to stash given his likelihood of a call-up in the not-too-distant future.

Jack Wenninger a Top Arm to Stash in Fantasy Baseball?

New York Mets starting pitching prospect Jack Wenninger is off to a fantastic start to the season in Triple-A. With eight outings in the books, Wenninger has made his mark as one of the most intriguing pitching prospects to stash in fantasy baseball, especially since he's getting very close to his MLB debut. Through eight starts (35.2 innings), he has a 1.51 ERA with 9.84 K/9 and 0.25 HR/9. His sinker is averaging 94 mph, and he's getting 44.4% whiff on his changeup. On the other hand, he has a 5.55 BB/9 rate, and his xFIP has jumped to 4.72, suggesting he's been walking too many batters and perhaps getting a bit lucky on the mound. That's something to keep in mind, especially as the Mets consider calling him up to face big-league hitting. At the same time, though, the results speak for themselves, and we've been very encouraged by Wenninger's performance through the first month and a half this year. He remains a top stash among pitchers in fantasy baseball.
