Josue Briceno Hoping There is One More Promotion For Him Coming Soon

Detroit Tigers catcher/first base prospect Josue Briceno was promoted to the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens on August 11 and is hoping he can play his way to a promotion to the Tigers big league club. Briceno is coming back from a right wrist injury that sidelined him for much of this season and has played for four different levels of the minors this season, combining to hit nine homers and 25 RBI in 104 at bats with 18 runs scored while hitting .279. In just three games with the Mud Hens, Briceno already has three RBI and is hitting 3-for-11. The left-handed hitter is the No. 5 prospect for the Tigers and is blessed with 60-grade power. At the big-league level, the Tigers are well stocked at the catcher position with Dillon Dingler and Eduardo Valencia with Spencer Torkelson manning first base. It's looking like 2027 might be a more likely timeline for Briceno to join the Tigers.

Tigers Prospect Josue Briceno Promoted to Triple-A

The Detroit Tigers promoted catcher/first base prospect Josue Briceno, MLB Pipeline's No. 54 overall prospect, to Triple-A Toledo this week, according to MLB Pipeline. Briceno is getting the call to the highest minor-league level after hitting a combined .280/.373/.591 with a .964 OPS, nine home runs, 22 RBI, and 17 runs scored in only 27 games (110 plate appearances) at the rookie-level Florida Complex League and with Single-A Lakeland and Double-A Erie. The 21-year-old left-handed-hitting Venezuelan has 60-grade power and is considered the Tigers' No. 4 overall prospect behind outfielders Max Clark (already in the big leagues) and Zyhir Hope, and shortstop Bryce Rainer. The 6-foot-4, 200-pounder is pretty athletic despite his size and position, and his strength from the left side of the plate is what makes him stand out as a catcher long-term for fantasy purposes. Briceno could stand to improve his plate discipline, but if he can do that early on next year at Toledo, he could force the Tigers' hand for an MLB promotion in 2027.

Josue Briceno Rehabbing, is a 2026 Debut in Play?

Detroit Tigers catching/first baseman prospect Josue Briceno (wrist) continues to work his way back from wrist surgery that he had before the season began, and is 10 games into his rehab assignment that has thus far been split between Single-A and with the team's Complex League affiliate, going 7-for-29 (.241) with a pair of doubles, a home run, and a 5:6 BB:K. The Tigers' third-ranked prospect is coming off a promising 2025 campaign in which he impressed at High-A to the tune of a .296/.422/.602 slash line through 55 games, which included an 11-game stretch in which he blasted eight home runs, before earning a promotion to Double-A midseason. Though Double-A proved more challenging, he still hit .232 with a 12.6 percent walk rate as one of the younger players at that level. The 6-foot-4 Venezuelan possesses highly rated hit and power tools, and although a 2026 debut is unlikely, the 21-year-old is worth monitoring, and he could be making a fantasy impact in 2027.

Josue Briceno has Wrist Surgery, Expected to Miss Multiple Months

Detroit Tigers catching prospect Josue Briceno (wrist) had right-wrist surgery to fix something called the "extensor carpi ulnaris subsheath," and he's expected to be out for multiple months, according to Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic. Briceno injured his wrist in a Grapefruit League game last weekend and is now looking at an extended absence in 2026. When he recovers from his wrist surgery, he will likely report to Double-A Erie to continue his development in the minor leagues. The 21-year-old Venezuelan backstop hit .266/.383/.500 with an .883 OPS, 20 home runs, 76 RBI, and 60 runs scored in 100 games with Erie and High-A West Michigan last year. Per MLB Pipeline, Briceno is the team's No. 4 prospect. He could eventually be moved to first base long-term. Briceno might be a long shot now to make his MLB debut in 2026.

Josue Briceno Invited to Big-League Camp

Detroit Tigers top catching prospect Josue Briceno was invited to MLB spring training. Briceno will join the team's other two top hitting prospects, Kevin McGonigle and Max Clark. Per MLB.com, Briceno is ranked as the sport's No. 33 prospect while he sits as Detroit's No. 3, sitting behind the two previously noted hitters. Briceno opened the 2025 campaign with High-A but needed only 55 games to prove he was ready to make the jump to Double-A. At High-A West Michigan, Briceno posted a .296/.422/.602 slash line with 13 doubles and 15 long balls. Through his first 45 games at Double-A, the young backstop took a slight step back, posting a lower .232/.335/.381 line with a modest .716 OPS. Given his growing pains, managers should expect Briceno to begin 2026 with Double-A Erie. However, if he enjoys a dominant start, he should be in the mix to join Triple-A before the All-Star break.

Josue Briceno a Name to Monitor in Detroit's System

Detroit Tigers catching prospect Josue Briceno made significant strides last season and could be in contention for a second-half MLB debut in 2026. The backstop began the season with High-A but needed only 55 games with West Michigan to prove he was ready to join Double-A. During his stint at High-A, Briceno posted an elite .296/.422/.602 line with 13 doubles and 15 home runs. He was then moved up to Double-A, where he took a step back, carrying a .232/.335/.381 line with six doubles, five home runs, and a 47:25 K:BB. Managers should expect the Tigers to keep Briceno at Double-A, given his inconsistency in the second half to begin 2026. However, he may only need a brief stint to prove he is ready to join Triple-A. Given the power upside he showed at High-A, Briceno would be a popular stash candidate once he is nearing an MLB promotion.

Josue Briceno Finding His Footing at Double-A

Detroit Tigers catching prospect Josue Briceno has continued to turn the corner at Double-A. On Thursday evening, the backstop hit his third home run over his last five contests. During his last six games, Briceno has only gone hitless once and held a solid .292/.308/.708 slash line over this stretch. However, during his first 13 games at Double-A Erie, the No. 51-ranked prospect in on MLB.com posted a low .191/.278/.234 line with just two doubles and a 14:6 K:BB. Earlier in the season, the 20-year-old logged 51 games at High-A West Michigan and was very productive, posting a .296/.422/.602 line with an impressive 1.024 OPS. He was eventually promoted to Double-A alongside top prospects Max Clark and Kevin McGonigle. The backstop could push for an early promotion to Triple-A next summer if he can continue to turn the corner.

Josue Briceno Snaps Power Skid at Double-A

Detroit Tigers catching prospect Josue Briceno was able to snap his power skid at Double-A in a big way on Friday. Facing Akron, the backstop went 2-for-4 with two long balls. These were his first two home runs since joining Double-A Erie. Before this breakout performance, the backstop has struggled through his first two weeks with the club, holding a modest .196/.271/.235 line with just two doubles and a 14:6 K:BB. Earlier in the campaign, the No. 57-ranked prospect in the sport and the No. 4-ranked in the system enjoyed great success at High-A West Michigan, posting a .296/.422/.602 slash line with 13 doubles, 15 home runs, and a 40:41 K:BB. Given his struggles to start his tenure at Double-A, fantasy managers should expect Briceno to likely open the 2026 season at the same level.

Josue Briceno Triples, Scores a Run in All-Star Futures Game

Detroit Tigers first base/catching prospect Josue Briceno went 1-for-3 with a triple and a run scored for the American League team during the All-Star Futures Game, in which the National League squad ended up winning 4-2. In fact, Briceno's triple was one of only three hits that the AL team was able to muster in the contest. The Tigers' fourth-ranked prospect has hit well all season, but a pair of four-hit games in late May and early June that included four home runs seemed to be the springboard to a stretch of hot hitting. Over his last 12 games, the 20-year-old has gone 18-for-46 (.391), and for the season, he is slashing .296/.417/.592 with 15 home runs, 58 RBI, 41 runs scored, and his walk rate (16.1 percent) nearly mirrors his strikeout rate (16.5 percent). The 6-foot-4 slugger recently earned a promotion to Double-A Erie and will likely finish the season there, however, he could be knocking on the door to the majors later next year, bringing with him some big power and tools that could make him an impactful fantasy asset.

Josue Briceno Gets on Base Five Times on Tuesday

Detroit Tigers first base/catching prospect Josue Briceno went 3-for-4 at the plate on Tuesday for High-A West Michigan, including a double, two walks, an RBI, and a run scored. It marked the fourth straight multi-hit game for the 20-year-old, which came on the heels of a selection to the All-Star Futures Game and a rise of 15 spots on MLB.com's latest prospect list refresh, from No. 73 overall to No. 58. The recent hot stretch has pushed his season-long batting average up to .291 with a .599 slugging percentage. His 17.3 percent walk rate, which is higher than his 16.4 percent strikeout rate, has helped the Tigers' fourth-ranked prospect to a phenomenal .416 on-base percentage. The 6-foot-4 slugger should be on the way to Double-A in the coming weeks and should be closely monitored in dynasty formats.
